Look Down This badge of shame you'll show until you die
Prisoners : It warns you're a dangerous man
Look down, look down
Don't look 'em in the eye Valjean :
Look down, look down I stole a loaf of bread
You're here until you die My sister's child was close to death
[Prisoners leaving the scene and Valjean runs And we were starving
into Javert]

Javert :
Javert :
You will starve again
"Retrieve the flag."
Unless you learn the meaning of the law

[Valjean carries the heavy flag to Javert and

Valjean :
drops it the moment he is close]
I know the meaning of those 19 years
A slave of the law
Javert :
Now prisoner 24601
Javert :
Your time is up
Five years for what you did
And your parole's begun
The rest because you tried to run
You know what that means
Yes, 24601

Valjean :
Valjean :
Yes, it means I'm free
My name is Jean Valjean

Javert :
Javert :
[Hands a letter to Valjean]
And I am Javert
No!
Do not forget my name!
Follow to the letter your itinerary
Do not forget me [He finds work on a farm.]
24601
Employer :
Prisoners : [Hands a bag of coins to Valjean]
[Use this part of the song to tidy the scene "You'll have to go
and prepare for the next]
I'll pay you off for the day
Look down, look down
Collect your bits and pieces there
You'll always be a slave
And be on your way."
Look down, look down
You're standing in your grave
Valjean :
--
[Opens the bag]
Valjean :
"You've given me half
Freedom at last
What the other men get!
How strange it is
This handful of tin
Never forget the years
Wouldn't buy my sweat!"
The waste

Worker :
Nor forgive them
[Laugh]
For what they've done!
"You broke the law
They are the guilty!
It's there for people to see
Every one!
Why should you get the same
As honest men like me?"
The day begins
And now let's see
Valjean:
What this new world
[Begins to take a walk with no specific
Will do for me direction while holding the letter from Javert]
"Now I know how freedom feels
The jail is always at your heels [The lights are dimmed and the sisters and
Bishop leave the scene]
It is the law
---
This piece of paper in my hand which bids me
cast throughout the land [In the middle of the night Valjean takes the
silver cup and other belongings of the Bishop,
It is the law
he runs off, but is brought back by two
Like a cur constables.]

I walk the streets

The dirt beneath their feet" [The constables throw Valjean to the floor,
hands cuffed]
[Rests behind the back of a church]

Constable 1 :
"Tell his reverence your story"
The Bishop
Bishop :
Constable 2 :
[Helps Valjean up and lets him inside]
"Let us see if he's impressed"
Come in sir for you are weary
And the night is cold out there
Constable 1 :
Though our lives are very humble
"You were lodging there last night"
What we have we have to share
There is wine here to revive you
Constable 2 :
There is bread to make you strong
"You were the honest Bishop's guest."
There's a bed to rest till morning
Rest from pain and rest from wrong
Constable 1 :
"And then, out of Christian goodness"
[ Valjean sits at the table and has dinner with
the bishop and the sisters. The way he eats
looks as if he hasn't eaten in days]
Constable 2 :
"When he learned about your plight"
Constable 1 : God has raised you out of darkness
"You maintain he made a present of this I have saved your soul for God!
silver -"

Valjean's Soliloquy
Bishop :
Valjean :
That is right.
[Beginning parts of this scene don't have to
But my friend you left so early be shown due to preparation while Valjean
continues to sing]
Surely something slipped your mind

What have I done?

[The bishop gives Valjean two silver
candlesticks.] Sweet Jesus, what have I done?
Become a thief in the night
You forgot I gave these also Become a dog on the run
Would you leave the best behind? Have I fallen so far
So Monsieurs you may release him And is the hour so late
For this man has spoken true That nothing remains but the cry of my hate
I commend you for your duty The cries in the dark that nobody hears
May God's blessing go with you. Here where I stand at the turning of the
years?
[The constables release Valjean and leave the
scene]
If there's another way to go
[Bends down to help Valjean up] I missed it twenty long years ago
But remember this, my brother My life was a war that could never be won
See in this some higher plan They gave me a number and murdered
Valjean
You must use this precious silver
When they chained me and left me for dead
To become an honest man
Just for stealing a mouthful of bread
By the witness of the martyrs
By the Passion and the Blood
Yet why did I allow that man To the whirlpool of my sin
To touch my soul and teach me love? I'll escape now from that world
He treated me like any other From the world of Jean Valjean
He gave me his trust Jean Valjean is nothing now
He called me brother Another story must begin
My life he claims for God above
Can such things be?
For I had come to hate the world
This world that always hated me At the End of the Day
The poor :
Take an eye for an eye [For the musical scene involving the poor, it
will be played on as background music while
Turn your heart into stone
the propsmen and actors prepare.]
This is all I have lived for
At the end of the day you're another day
This is all I have known older
And that's all you can say for the life of the
poor
One word from him and I'd be back
It's a struggle, it's a war
Beneath the lash, upon the rack
And there's nothing that anyone's giving
Instead he offers me my freedom
One more day standing about, what is it for?
I feel my shame inside me like a knife
One day less to be living
He told me that I have a soul
How does he know?
At the end of the day you're another day
What spirit comes to move my life?
colder
Is there another way to go?
And the shirt on your back doesn't keep out
the chill

I am reaching, but I fall And the righteous hurry past

And the night is closing in They don't hear the little ones crying

As I stare into the void And the plague is coming on fast, ready to kill
One day nearer to dying
Female workers :
At the end of the day there's another day [Switching from person to person in terms of
dawning vocals]
And the sun in the morning is waiting to rise And we're counting our blessings.
Like the waves crash on the sand Havetyou seen how the foreman is fuming
today?
Like a storm that'll break any second
With his terrible breath and his wandering
There's a hunger in the land
hands?
There's a reckoning still to be reckoned
It's because little Fantine won't give him his
And there's gonna be hell to pay way

At the end of the day Take a look at his trousers, you'll see where
he stands
And the boss, he never knows
Foreman :
That the foreman is always on heat
[The foreman approaches a group of female
workers.] If Fantine doesn't look out

At the end of the day, you get nothing for Watch how she goes
nothing
She'll be out on the street
Sitting flat on your bum doesn't buy any
bread
[The female workers start to tidy up their
stations]
Female workers :
At the end of the day it's another day over
[Turns to take a look at the foreman while
With enough in your pocket to last for a week
working.]
Pay the landlord, pay the shop
There are children back at home
Keep on working as long as you're able
And the children have got to be fed
Keep on working 'til you drop
And you're lucky to be in a job
Or it's back to the crumbs off the table
For you've got to pay your way
Foreman :
At the end of the day
And in a bed [grin]
I run a business of repute
[Woman approaching Fantine and snatches a
letter]
[Valjean spots Javert in the scene and stops
And what have we here, little innocent for a moment]
sister?
Deal with this foreman
Oh, come on Fantine, let's have all the news
Be as patient as you can"
"Dear Fantine, you must send us more money
Your child needs a doctor
Foreman :
There's no time to lose"
[Foreman nods]
"Yes, Monsieur Madeline"
Fantine :
[The mayor walks up stairs to greet Javert]
Give that letter to me
"Now someone say how this began!"
It is none of your business
With a husband at home
Female worker :
And a bit on the side
At the end of the day
Is there anyone here
She’s the one who began it!
Who can swear before God
There’s a kid that she’s hiding
She has nothing to fear?
In some little town.
She has nothing to hide?
There’s a man she has to pay
You can guess how she picks up the extra.
Valjean :
You can bet she’s earning her keep
[Enters and walks into the middle of the
Sleeping around
scene]
And the boss wouldn’t like it!
"What is this fighting all about?
Someone tear these two apart
Fantine :
This is a factory, not a circus
[Begs to be understood]
Come on ladies, settle down
Yes, it's true there’s a child
I am the mayor of this town
And the child is my daughter Of any trouble hereabout
And her father abandoned us You play a virgin in the light
Leaving us flat. But need no urgin' in the night
Now she lives with an innkeeper man [The foreman gets slapped by Fantine]
And his wife
And I pay for the child, Female workers :
What's the matter with that? She's been laughing at you
While she's having her men
Female workers : She'll be nothing but trouble again and again
At the end of the day You must sack her today
She’ll be nothing but trouble Sack the girl today
And there’s trouble for all
When there’s trouble for one! Foreman :
While we’re earning our daily bread [Dragging Fantine by the arm]
She’s the one with her hands in the butter "Right my girl, on your way"
You must send the slut away
Or we’re all gonna end in the gutter Fantine :
And it’s us who’ll have to pay "Monsieur le Maire, Monsieur le Maire
At the end of the day! Monsieur le Maire, please, please, Monsieur,
I have a child!"
[Fantine gets thrown out of the factory by the
Foreman :
foreman]
I might have known the bitch could bite
[The scene is focused on Javert and Valjean]
I might have known the cat had claws
I might have guessed your little secret
Valjean :
Ah yes, the virtuous Fantine
"Welcome Inspector."
Who keeps herself so pure and clean
Javert :
You'd be the cause I had no doubt
"Monsieur le Maire." [Both bow before each Fantine :
other]
"Bonsoir. How much for this- [blocking due to

command."
Lovely Ladies
Valjean :
"Welcome sir, come guard our laws. I'm sure
Sailor :
we're here in common cause."
I smell women
Javert :
Smell 'em in the air
"You've done this city proud, you're praised
by those up high, and your people thrive." Think I'll drop me anchor
Valjean : In that harbor over there
"The dignity of toil, stay alive." [Gives Javert a
rosary]
[Emerges from the scene]
Javert :
"It seems to me, we may have met."
Sailor :
Valjean
Lovely ladies
"Your face is not a face I would forget."
I'll love you till I'm Broke
Javert :
Seven months at sea
"Yet you remind me of a man from years ago.
And now I'm hungry for a poke
He who had went against the law."
[Gets near one of the women]
Valjean :
"Say what you must say, don't leave it there."
Sailor :
Javert:
Even stokers need a little stoke!
"Forgive me sir, I would not dare."

Women :
[Both pause]
Lovely ladies
[Lovely Ladies soundtrack starts to play while
readying the scene] Waiting for a bite
Waiting for the customers
Who only come at night Fantine :
Lovely ladies It pays a debt
Ready for the call
Standing up or lying down Old lady :
Or any way at all Just think of that
Bargain prices up against the wall
[Moves seductively but backs away from Fantine :
Fantine and the old lady]
What can I do?
It pays a debt.
Old lady :
Ten francs may save my poor Cosette!
[Approaches fantine]
[Takes the old lady's hand in hers]
What pretty hair!
What pretty locks you got there
Women :
What luck you got.
[Fantine's hair begins to be cut]
It's worth a centime, my dear
Lovely ladies
I'll take the lot
Waiting in the dark
Ready for a thick one
Fantine :
Or a quick one in the park
Don't touch me!
Leave me alone!
Whore :
[Backs away]
Long time short time
Any time, my dear
Old lady :
Cost a little extra if you want to take all year!
Let's make a price.
I'll give you all of ten francs,
All :
Just think of that!
Quick and cheap is underneath the pier!
[Fantine re-emerges, her long hair cut short You'll get twice if I take two. [Held down by
but is quickly pulled by the denture seller] the women and the denture seller while he
pulls out some of her teeth]

Denture seller :
[As Fantine screams in agony, the scene is
Come over here
covered and is to be ready for the next part]
It's 20 francs for a tooth.
[Fantine is curled up against the wall nursing
her sore mouth]

Head whore:
[Approaches Fantine] Sailor : [emerges into the scene]
Come're my dear, Give me the dirt, who's that bit over there?

I'll pay you well for your youth.

Whore :

Denture seller: A bit of skirt.

[Leads Fantine to the side] She's the one sold her hair. [whisper]

The pain won't last

You'll still be able to bite Whore 2 :
She's got a kid.

Head whore : Sends her all that she can

Just the back ones. [whisper]

Sailor :

Denture seller : I might have known

I do it fast, I know my business alright. There is always some man

It's worth a go. Lovely lady, come along and join us!
Lovely lady! [The sailor and both the women
approach Fantine]
Fantine :
You'll pay me first what I am due.
Whore 1 :
Denture seller :
Come on dearie, why all the fuss?
Whore 2 :
You're no grander than the rest of us [Fantine goes off with the sailor]
Whore 1 :
Life has dropped you at the bottom of the Lovely ladies
heap
Going for a song
Whore 2 :
Got a lot of callers
Join your sisters
But they never stay for long
Whore 1 :
Make money in your sleep!
Fantine :
Come on, Captain, you can wear your shoes
[Fantine let's them help her up and try to
[Fantine leads the captain to a room]
clean her up a bit]
Don't it make a change
To have a girl who can't refuse
Whore 2 :
Easy money
That's right dearie, show him what you've
got! [Fantine walks near the sailor] Lying on a bed
Whore 1 : [Fantine is being undressed by the sailor]
That's right dearie, let him have the lot... Just as well they never see
The hate that's in your head
Don't they know they're making love
All whores : To one already dead!
Old men, young men, take 'em as they come
Harbor rats and alley cats [the covers are pulled down to not show the
scene]
And every kind of scum
Poor men, rich men, leaders of the land
I Dreamed a Dream
See them with their trousers off
Fantine :
They're never quite as grand
He slept a summer by my side
All it takes is money in your hand!
He filled my days with endless wonder "If you file a proper testimony and report, we
will serve justice for her actions."
He took my childhood in his stride
Fantine :
But he was gone when autumn came
"No, please! I have a daughter and if I go to
jail she'll die!" [Is on her knees]
And still I dream he’ll come to me
Javert :
That we will live the years together
"I've heard lines like those many times."
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
[Valjean comes to the scene]

I had a dream my life would be

Valjean :
So different from this hell I’m living
"Moment of your time Javert, I do believe
So different now from what it seemed this woman's tale is true."

Now life has killed the dream I dreamed. Javert :

"But Monsieur le Maire."

[Fantine is sitting in a corner, shaking as Valjean :

another sailor approaches her]
"You've done your duty, let her be. She needs
[He grins and grabs her but she shoves him a doctor not a jail."

Javert :
"Monsieur le Maire."
Sailor :
"You little.."
[Valjean approaches Fantine]

"Sir! Please forgive me!"

[Pause]

[Valjean enters]
Fantine :
"I've never done no wrong."
Valjean :
Valjean :
Oh, Fantine, our time is running out
"Is it true, what I have done?"
But Fantine, I swear this on my life [blocking]

Before you chain me up like a slave again
Fantine :
Listen to me, there is something I must do

There is none but me who can intercede
Then I will keep you warm. [Valjean takes her

You must think me mad [Pulls out a sword]
And tell Cosette I love her
I've hunted you across the years
And I'll see her when I wake...
Men like you can never change

A man such as you

Madame Thenardier :

Madame Thenardier :
Eponine, come my dear, Eponine, let me see
[Walks into the scene, eyes on Cosette] you
Now look who's here You look very well in that new little blue hat
The little madam herself! There's some little girls who know how to

Pretending once again she's been `so awfully

Enough of that, or I'll forget to be nice!
You heard me ask for something,
Eponine :
And I never ask twice!
[Cosette runs to fetch water from the well] "Show me, where do you live? Tell me my
child, what is your name?" [Cosette shows
herself]
[Walks to Thenardier and kicks him at the leg]

Cosette :
"Wakey wakie, we're opening." "I'm called Cosette." [Both smile]

[Thenardier gets up from a couch and Valjean :

wanders into the middle of the scene and

bends down to greet Eponine]
"Can I help you with your bucket?"

[Switching of scene to the Thenardiers' Inn]

Eponine :
[Valjean strolls along the place with Cosette
"Here you go, daddy!" holding his arm and she spots a doll in a shop]
[Places his hat on his head]
Thenardier : [Both arrive at the inn, the Thenardiers
already being there]

"Let me take your coat, Monsieur." darling Colette.
[Sits down and pulls Cosette to lay in her
arms]
Madame Thenardier :
Cosette. [Correcting]
Little dear, cost us dear
Medicines are expensive m'sieur [Thenardiers
Thenardier :
start coughing behind Cosette]
Cosette.

Not that we begrudged a sou

[Pause]
It's no more than we Christians must do!
Dear Fantine, gone to rest
Have we done for a child what is best?
Thenardiers :
I think so
One thing more, one small doubt
There are treacherous people about
Shared our bread,
No offense. Please reflect.
Shared each bone,
Your intentions may not be correct?
Treated her like she's one of our own (Yes sir
le Maire)
Valjean :
Like our own Monsieur.
No more words. Here's your price.
Fifteen hundred for your sacrifice.
[Thenardiers give Cosette kisses]
Come, Cosette, say goodbye
Let us seek out a friendlier sky.
Valjean :
Thank you both for Cosette
"Let us not talk a bargain of bones and greed."
[Hands money to Thenardier] It won't take you too long to forget.
[Valjean gives more money to Thenardier]
"Now may I say we are agreed?"
[Thenardiers both give Cosette a kiss goodbye
and Cosette leaves with Valjean, holding her
Madame Thenardier :
old doll]
That would quite, fit the bill
If she hadn't so often been ill
Thenardier :
"Farewell Coshette." [Clutching the money]
Madame Thenardier :
Madame Thenardier : "Not enough! There's a copper at the door!
What the devil have you done?"
"Its Cosette."

[Javert comes to the scene]

[Valjean leads Cosette away and gives her the
doll she saw from the shop]
Valjean : Javert :
"This is for you." [Smile] "Where's the child Cosette?"

[Cosette accepts the gift] Madame Thenardier :

"She's gone with the gent. Didn't tell us where
they went. Didn't leave his home address."
Valjean :
Where I go, you will be.
[Javert sighs and walks away]

Cosette :
Madame Thenardier :
Will you be like a papa to me?
You're a bloody fool Look at what we got
Should've struck the iron Struck it while it's
Valjean : hot! [Scolding and gripping Thenardier's arm]

Yes Cosette, this is true. I'll be father and

mother to you.
Thenardier :
Next time round, I promise I'm gonna get the

money]

Javert :
Thenardier :
"Valjean!"
"Not bad."
Pause
[Pull back the blinds and show Valjean
carrying Cosette running through the area]
[Valjean and Cosette arrive to the scene,
walking around and giving spare change to
the poor and Marius looks at her in awe]
[They meet at a dead end but with both
Cosette and Valjean over a barrier/wall,
leaving the scene]
[Cosette and Marius' eyes lock into one
another]
Javert :
"Valjean!" Pause

[Javert again walks away onto another spot in [Thenardier pulls Eponine to the side]
the area, most probable for it to be the edge of
the stage]
Thenardier :
"Eponine what are you doing here? You know
Javert :
your place."
"He knows his way in the dark. Minus the
way of the law."
[The Thenardiers spot Valjean and hides
behind a wall]
[Pause and Javert slowly starts to walk away
from the stage]
Madame Thenardier :
"That man's face, I can't forget.." [Shocked]
Javert :
"Those who fall into wrong must pay.. the
price." Thenardier :
"He's the bastard that borrowed Colette."
[Next scene napud]

Madame Thenardier :
[Marius gets onto the stage with Eponine "Cosette."
following him]

Eponine :
"Here comes Javert!" [Yells] We were children together
Look what's become of me.
[Valjean hears Eponine and tries to walk
away from the scene, getting almost too close
[Marius approaches Eponine and she instantly
to Javert but they escape]
looks at him]

[Javert approaches the Thenardiers]

Marius :
Eponine, who was that girl?
Thenardier :
"There was this man with girl who trails
Eponine :
behind him, t'was the child he stole from me."
[Wipes fake tears] Some bourgeois two-a-penny thing!

Madame Thenardier : Marius :

"Yeah and me!" [scoff] Eponine, find her for me!

Thenardier : Eponine :
"Yeah both of us." What will you give me?

Javert : Marius :
"Could it be Valjean..? Let the old man keep Anything!
on running, I will run him off his feet."

Eponine :
[Everyone except Eponine leaves the stage]
Got you all excited now,
EPONINE'S ERRAND
But God knows what you see in her
[Eponine leans on a wall]
Ain't you all delighted now

Eponine :
[Marius begins to pick up money from his
Cosette.. now I remember. coat]
Cosette, how can it be?
Eponine :
No, I don't want your money sir... [Eponine comes onto scene and Marius
approaches her as soon as he sees her]

[Eponine tries to leave but Marius grips her

by the arm, she looks at him]
Marius :
Marius : "Did you find her?"
Eponine! Do this for me... ---
Discover where she lives (IN MY LIFE)
But careful how you go Cosette :
Don't let your father know [Sitting down on a bench]
'Ponine! I'm lost until she's found! How strange
This feeling that my life's begun at last
[Marius begins walking in a direction and This change,
Eponine follows]
Can people really fall in love so fast?
What's the matter with you, Cosette?
Eponine :
Have you been too much on your own?
You see, I told you so!
So many things unclear
There's lots of things I know
So many things unknown.

[Marius leaves]
In my life
There are so many questions and answers
Eponine :
That somehow seem wrong
'Ponine... she knows her way around!
In my life
There are times when I catch in the silence
[Pull down the blinds and prepare for the next
The sigh of a faraway song
scene]

[Stands up from the bench]

---
And it sings
Of a world that I long to see [Pushes his sleeves up, Valjean backs away]
Out of reach Just a whisper away There's so little I know
Waiting for me. That I'm longing to know
Of the man that you were
Does he know I'm alive? In a time long ago... (Please Cosette)
Do I know if he's real? [Valjean walks away]
Does he see what I see?
Does he feel what I feel? There's so little you say
[Walks to the window] Of the life you have known
Why you keep to yourself
In my life Why we're always alone
I'm no longer alone So dark! So dark and deep...
Now the love in my life The secrets that you keep!
Is so near In my life
Find me now, find me here! Please forgive what I say
[Valjean enters the scene] You are loving and gentle and good
But Papa, dear Papa,
Valjean : In your eyes I am still like a child
Dear Cosette, Who is lost in a wood
You're such a lonely child
How pensive, how sad you seem to be Valjean :
Believe me, were it within my power [Wandering around the set]
[Holds Cosette's hands in his] No more words
I'd fill each passing hour No more words. It's a time that is dead
How quiet it must be, I can see There are words
With only me for company. That are better unheard,
Better unsaid.
Cosette : [Cosette follows]
You're the friend who has brought me here
Cosette : [Eponine giggles]
In my life Thanks to you I am one with the gods And
Heaven is near!
I'm no longer a child and I yearn
And I soar through a world that is new that is
For the truth that you know
free
Of the years... years ago!

Eponine : (to herself)

Valjean :
Every word that he says is a dagger in me!
You will learn
[Marius wanders around in front of the gate]
Truth is given by God
In my life
To us all in our time
There's been no one like him anywhere
In our turn
Anywhere, where he is...
If he asked... I'd be his
[Pull down the blinds]

Marius & Eponine :

[Marius and Eponine arrive to the garden
In my life
scene]
There is someone who touches my life

Marius :
Marius :
In my life
Waiting near
She has burst like the music of angels
The light of the sun
Eponine :
And my life seems to stop
Waiting here
As if something is over
And something has scarcely begun.
(A HEART FULL OF LOVE)

[Stops walking and takes Eponine's hands to

spin her around] [Marius gets closer to the gate and Eponine
backs away]
Eponine,
Marius : Marius :
A heart full of love I am lost
[Cosette begins to come closer]
A heart full of song Cosette :
I'm doing everything all wrong I am found! [Instant blocking]
Oh God, for shame
I do not even know your name Marius :
Dear Mademoiselle A heart full of love [Blocking]
Won't you say?
Will you tell? [Blocking] Eponine :
He was never mine to lose
Cosette :
A heart full of love Cosette & Marius :
[Eponine looks from afar] A heart full of you [Blocking]
No fear, no regret |
Eponine :
Marius : Why regret what cannot be [Blocking]
My name is Marius Pontmercy |
Marius :
Cosette : A single look and then I knew [Blocking
And mine's Cosette
Cosette :
Marius : I knew it too
Cosette, I don't know what to say
[both grin] Eponine :
Cosette : These are words he'll never say.
Then make no sound Not to me
[Eponine walks over near the gate and
Thenardier arrives to the scene]
Marius :
From today
[Thenardier grabs Eponine by the arm with
force]
Eponine :
Not me, not for me [Blocking]
Thenardier :
|
"Eponine get on home, you're not needed in
Cosette : this."

Every day [Blocking]

| Eponine :

Cosette & Marius : "I know this house, I tell you. There's nothing
here for you. Just the old man and the girl.
For it isn't a dream They live ordinary lives."
Not a dream after all. [Blocking]
| Thenardier :
Eponine (with Cosette and Marius) : "Don't interfere, you've got some gall. Take
His heart full of love. care young miss, you've got a lot to say."

He will never, feel this way. [Blocking]

Eponine :

Pause [backs away]

[Valjean interrupts, not being visible on "I'm gonna scream, I'm gonna warn them
scene] here!"

Valjean : Thenardier :

"Cosette? Cosette what are you doing? I told "One little scream and you'll regret it for a
you to stay inside." year!"

[Cosette heads back inside and Marius leaves [Eponine screams]

the scene]

Valjean :
"Wake up, Cosette!" [not visible on scene] "Hurry Cosette! Its time to close another door
and live another day. Get dressed we're
leaving."
Thenardier :
"You wait my girl, you'll rue this night
Cosette :
I'll make you scream, you'll scream alright."
"Please no!" [Blocking]

[Eponine spits at her father and he slaps her in

Valjean :
the face, hard]
"Now!"

Thenardier :
[Pull up the blinds]
"Police!"

[Cosette leaves a letter by the gate and

[Eponine runs away]
quickly runs out of the scene]

[pull down the blinds]

[Eponine watches from the side and picks it
up to read, it begins to rain]

Valjean :
"Must be Javert. He's found my cover at last.
I've got to get Cosette away." [while fixing up
ON MY OWN
scene]

[Eponine begins to wander around the set, in

Valjean :
the rain]
"Hurry Cosette, prepare to leave. Say no
Eponine :
more, tomorrow we'll away!" [Blocking]
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
Cosette :
All alone
"No please papa, we can't!" [Blocking]
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him
Valjean :
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes Without me
And he has found me His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver That I have never known
All the lights are misty in the river [Pulls up her knees to her chest, lightly
sobbing]
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and
forever [Looks up and whispers, leaning her head
against the wall]
I love him
And I know it's only in my mind
I love him
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
I love him
And although I know that he is blind
But only on my own
Still I say, there's a way for us
[Eponine leans on a wall and slowly begins to
sink down to the ground] [Gets up and takes a look at the letter again]
I love him
But when the night is over [Marius runs up the scene and begins
knocking immediately at Cosette's door]
He is gone
The river's just a river
[Pull down the blinds]
Without him
[Play ONE DAY MORE soundtrack while
The world around me changes
preparing for the scene, up to sa part ni
The trees are bare and everywhere Marius and Cosette]

The streets are full of strangers

[Heavy breathing] [Pull up the blinds]

I love him [Marius holds a red cloth, in the set with the
revolutionaries]
But every day I'm learning
Marius :
All my life
"My place is here, I fight with you!"
I've only been pretending
[The revolutioners cheer] Marius :
"One to the right!"
[Pull down the blinds]
[gunshot again]
[The revolutionaries gather in the middle of
the city, the guards later arrive]
Enjolras :
"To the barricade!" [Pointing his gun
Guard : upwards]
"Hold!"
[Pull down the blinds]
[Marius and Enjolras aim their guns at the
guards from high up]
[Sound of running, yelling and more gunshots
are heard]
Guard :
"Charge!" ---
[Pull up the blinds]
All pause [Scene shows revolutionaries preparing
chairs, tables and other things to be used as a
barricade]
[A loud gunshot is heard and a female civilian
is shot]
Enjolras :
"I need a volunteer, someone who can find
[Inaudible yelling/panic]
out their plan and when they will attack!"
[Yelling]

Random person :
"They did this to an innocent woman!" Javert :
[yelling]
[Wearing a disguise to blend in with the
group]

[More gunshots, revolutionaries begin "I can find out the truth, I know their ways."

Random guy : "Listen my friends, I have done as I said.
"See the people unite!" [Pats Javert's I have been to their lines, I have counted each

Enjolras : [Enjolras puts his gun away and the others

follow]
"You're right."

Javert :
Random guy :
"Better beware, they have armies to spare."
"Don't hold back." [Hands a gun to Javert]

Enjolras :
[The revolutionaries climb up the barricade,
waving flags and holding their guns] "Have faith, if you know what their
movements are we'll spoil their game."

Revolutionaries :
Pause
Red, the blood of angry men!
Black the dark of ages past!
Enjolras :
Red, a world about to dawn!
"There are ways that our people can fight, we
Black, the night that ends at last!
shall overcome their power!"

Javert :
[Pull down the blinds]
"I have overheard their plans, there will be no
attack tonight. They intend to starve you out
before you start a proper fight."
Random guy :
"He's back!"
[Silence]

[Javert walks back to the barricade and the

revolutionaries point their guns at him] Javert :
"Concentrate their force, hit us when its

Javert :
Gavroche : "Shoot me now or shoot me later. Every
schoolboy to his sport. Death to each and
"Liar!" [Yells]
every traitor, I renounce your people's court."
[Smug]

[everyone turns to look at Gavroche]

Marius :

Gavroche : "We keep looking forward!"

[Guards approach]
Random guy :

Javert :
Enjolras :
"French revolution!" [Marius brings a torch along with the bomb
and a guard is faced with him]

Guards :
Marius :
"Fire!"
"Fall back or I blow the barricade!"
[Threatens]
[loud gunshots and screaming, chaos]

Guard :
Marius :
"Blow it up and take yourself with it!"
"They're getting over the barricade!"

Random guy :

could've gotten us all killed!" she smiles to him]

Another guy : Eponine :

"Marius you saved us all!" Don't you fret, Monsieur Marius,
I don't feel any pain.
[Marius immediately heads to Eponine] A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now.
Marius : [Eponine begins to quiver but keeps her eyes
on Marius]
"Eponine what are you doing?"
You're here, that's all I need to know.
And you will keep me safe,
Eponine :
And you will keep me close,
[Grabs letter from her pocket]
And rain will make the flowers grow.
"I kept it from you, its from Cosette."
[Eponine leans her head on Marius' shoulder]

[Marius takes the letter]

Marius :
[Shaking Eponine]
Eponine :
But you will live, 'Ponine,
"I'm sorry."
Dear God above!
If I could heal your wounds with words of
Marius :
love!
"What've you done..?"
Eponine :
[Takes his hand into hers and places it on her

Eponine]
Just hold me now, and let it be,
Shelter me,
Comfort me...
[Begins to rain in the set]

Eponine :
So don't you fret, Monsieur Marius, Marius :
I don't feel any pain. And rain,
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now. [Blocking] Eponine :

Marius : [Places her hand on Marius' chest but lightly
slips away, indicating that Eponine has

Marius :
Can hardly hurt you now.
Will make the flowers...grow
[Marius gives Eponine a kiss on the forehead]
Marius :
I'm here,
[Enjolras signals to the revolutionaries]

Eponine :
[Marius lets go and two guys pick Eponine up
That's all I need to know. and carry her away]

Eponine : [Marius tears up and begins to read the letter

and knocks on the door]

[Valjean sighs and looks up]

Gavroche :
"Letter from the barricade."
Valjean :
"Oh god, this day has come. This Marius will
Valjean : take the treasure of his Autumn days to be his
wife. But he could die tonight."
"Letter from the barricade?"

[Pause and pull down the blinds]

[Gavroche walks away]

Valjean :
Valjean :
"I need to find that boy."
"Oy kid, stay away from there, you
understand?"

If I should fall in the battle to come
Let this be my goodbye...
[Enjolras nods at the revolutionaries and they
Now that I know you love me as well let Valjean in but still keep their guns aimed]

It is harder to die...
I pray that god will bring me home Random guy :

To be with you.
"You see that prisoner over there, a volunteer [Gunshots stop]
like you?" [Gestures to Javert who is hanging
from a rope, hands tied]
Enjolras :
"Thank you Monsieur."
Pause

Valjean :
Random guy :
"Give me no thanks Monsieur, there's

Enjolras :
[The revolutionaries push Valjean near the
tavern and Javert looks up] "If it is in my power."

Gavroche : Valjean :
"Don't kill him, I know him!" "Give me the spy Javert, let me take care of
him."

[Silence, Valjean looks up and sees a

guard/sniper] [Gavroche and Enjolras nods and hands him a
gun]

Valjean :
Enjolras :
"Enemy's marked, on the roof!"
"Do what you have to do, the man belongs to
you."
Enjolras :
"On the roof! On the roof!"
[Revolutionaries leave the scene]

[Gunshots]
[Valjean approaches Javert with a knife]

Random guy :
Valjean :
"Eyes to the roofs, eyes to the roofs!"
"We meet again."
Javert : "And you are free, there are no conditions."
"You've hungered for this all your life."
[Valjean gets closer and slices the ropes in [Javert puts his hand around his neck]
Javert's hands with a knife]

Valjean :
Valjean :
"No bargains or petitions. There's nothing that

nothing more."

Javert :
Pause
"Don't understand." [Confused]

[Valjean aims a gunshot, Javert flinches and

Javert :
[Pull up the blinds, whistle]
"Shoot me now for all I care, if you let me go
beware, you still answer to Javert." [Looks
back] Marius :
"The rain has damaged the gun powder, we're
now low on ammunition."
Valjean :
"You are wrong, you always have been
wrong. I'm a man, no worse than any man." Enjolras :
[Shaking his head]
"We're the only barricade left."

Pause
Marius :
"What?"
Valjean :
Enjolras : [Gavroche goes from under the barricade and
stays in front]
"We're the only one's left."
Enjolras :
Gavroch :
"We are abandoned by those who live in fear,
let us not waste lives." And little people know
When little people fight

So never kick a dog because he's just a pup
Enjolras :
"But all who wish to go from here."
Random guy :
"Gavroche!" [whisper]
[The revolutionaries look at each other]

[A guard fires, missing Gavrochup

Gavroche :
Do you hear the people sing?
Gavroche :
Singing the song of angry men?
You better run for cover when the pup grows

Revolutionaries :
And we'll fight like twenty armies
It is the music of the people
And we won't give up
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart

There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

back by fellow revolutionaries]

[The revolutionaries get up the barricade and

prepare their guns]
[Gavroche is shot, flinching]

Gavroche :
"So you better run for cover, when the pup
grows up!" [Yells, blocking]

away?"
[Valjean immediately sees this and drags him
to the side, hiding and getting off stage.]
Enjolras :
"Let us die facing our foes, make them bleed
while we can." [The revolutionaries are cornered by the
guards, each one of them getting killed except
for Enjolras.]
Random guy :
"Make them pay for every man."
[Enjolras raises up a red cloth, accepting
death]
Enjolras :
"Let all those rise, to take their place until the [the guards leave the scene]

Guard :
"Cannons!"
[Pull down the blinds]

Marius :

Valjean :
Thenardier :
"Not an hour yet, then I'm yours. All our debts

Valjean : Javert :
"Get off!" [Pushes Thenardier to the ground "The man of mercy comes again and talks of

[Valjean picks up Marius and begins walking] Valjean :

"Come on, time is short! Look down, Javert.
He's standing in his grave!"
Valjean :
"Which way?"
[Silence]

Thenardier :
[Valjean walks up to where Javert is and
"To the left!" [Panting]
walks past him]

[Pull down the blinds]

Javert :
[Pull up the blinds]
"One more step and you die." [Aims gun]

[Javert scoffs and drops his gun, beginning to
"Its you Javert, I knew you wouldn't wait for wander the scene]
too long. This man's done no wrong, he needs
a doctor's care." [Panting]
JAVERT'S SUICIDE
The world I have known
Javert : Is lost in shadow
Who is this man, what sort of devil is he? Is he from heaven or from hell?
To have me caught in a trap and choose to let And does he know
me go free?
That granting me my life today?
It was his hour at last to put a seal on my fate
This man has killed me, even so
Wipe up the past and watch me clean up the
slate
I am reaching but I fall
All it would take was a flick of his knife
And the stars are black and cold
Vengeance was his and he gave me back my
life As I stare into the void
Damned if I'll live in the debt of a thief Of a world that cannot hold
Damned if I'll yield at the end of the chase
I am the law and the law is not mocked I'll escape now from that world
I'll spit his pity right back in his face From the world of Jean Valjean
There is nothing on earth that we share There is no where I can turn
It is either Valjean or Javert There is no way to go on
[Looks down from the edge]

[Javert closes his eyes for a bit and falls into

the edge]

And my thoughts fly apart

[Pull down the blinds]
Can this man be believed?
---
Shall his sins be forgiven?
[Pull up the blinds, Marius gets up from bed
Shall his crimes be reprieved?
with a doctor by his side and starts wandering
around]
And must I now begin to doubt
What I never doubted all those years? [Show a part of Marius singing the scene but
instantly pull down the blinds to prepare for
My heart is stone but still it trembles
the scene with Cosette]
Every day you walk with stronger step.
EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES You walk with longer step.
The worst is over.
Marius :
There's a grief that can't be spoken Cosette :
There's a pain goes on and on Don't think about it, Marius.
Empty chairs at empty tables With all the years ahead of us,
Now my friends are dead and gone I will never go away,
And we will be together every day.
Here they talked of revolution
Here it was they lit the flame Every day,
Here they sang about tomorrow We'll remember that night
And tomorrow never came And the vow that we made:

From the table in the corner A heart full of love. [Blocking]

They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing Valjean :
And I can hear them now! "She was never mine to keep."

The very words that they had sung Cosette :

Became their last communion A night full of you.
On this lonely barricade The words are old
At dawn But always true.

--- Valjean :
[Cosette helps Marius with his injuries, "She is youthful, she is free."
Valjean walks behind them]

[Cosette and Marius kiss, Valjean smiles]

Cosette :
If he is caught, she is disgraced
[Pull down the blinds] The time has come to journey on
And from this day he must be gone
--- Who am I?
VALJEAN'S CONFESSION Who am I?

Marius : Marius :
M'sieur, this is a day I never can forget You're Jean Valjean!
Is gratitude enough for giving me Cosette?
Your home shall be with us and not a day Marius :
shall pass
Monsieur, you cannot leave
But we will prove our love
Whatever I tell my beloved Cosette
To you, whom we shall call
She will never believe!
A father to us both
A father to us all
Valjean :
Tell her I've gone on a journey a long way
Valjean : away
Not another word, my son Tell her my heart was too full for farewells
There's something now that must be done It is better this way
There lived a man whose name was Jean Promise me, M'sieur, Cosette will never know
Valjean
What I have spoken, why I must go
He stole some bread to save his sister's son
For the sake of Cosette, it must be so
For nineteen winters, he served his time
In sweat, he washed away his crime
[Valjean leaves the scene, pull down the
Years ago blinds]
He broke parole and lived a life apart
How could he tell Cosette and break her Cosette :
heart?
"Where's he gone without a word? That
It's for Cosette this must be faced wouldn't be his way to go. Why so sudden?
Why so strange? Did he say how long he'll be Thenardier :
gone?"
"I saw him, Jean Valjean. In the sewers, he
carried a corpse. Found this ring as a great
souvenir." [Shows the ring on his finger]
Marius :
"All he asked for me to say is he's on a
journey, far away." Marius : (Thenardier)
"I know this, this is mine. (No) This is surely
some heavenly sign. If its true, then I'm right.
Cosette :
Jean Valjean was my saviour that night."
"He can't leave us now, how he breaks my
heart."
[Thenardier scoffs]

Marius :
Thenardier :
"And we will never be apart, I promise you."
"Jean Valjean, that old con. You pay up or I'll
say where he's gone!" [Threaten]
---
[The sound of wedding bells are heard,
Marius :
Marius and Cosette are newly wed]
"Where is he?"

[Thenardiers get onto the scene and Marius

instantly notices] [Thenardier smirks and Marius punches him,
Thenardier falls to the ground]

Marius :
Marius :
"Go away, Thenardier. Do you think I don't
know who you are?" [Pushes them out of the "Where is he?" [Grabbing Thenardier]
room]

Thenardier :
Madame Thenardier :
"The convent!"
"He's no fool, told you so! Show m'sieur what
you've come here to show." [Scolding
Thenardier] [Marius let's go and walks back to where
Cosette is]
Marius :
"Cosette, come with me. Come with me" Valjean :
Alone I wait in the shadows
[Marius pulls Cosette by the arm, walking off I count the hours until I sleep
stage]
I dreamed a dream Cosette st-stood by
It made her weep to know I die
[The Thenardiers are carried outside by the
Alone at the end of the day
guests in the hall]
Upon this wedding night I pray
Take these children my Lord to thy embrace
BEGGARS AT THE FEAST
And show them grace
God on high
Thenardiers :
Hear my prayer
Watch the buggers dance
Take me now
Watch 'em 'til they drop
To thy care
Keep your wits about you
Where you are
And you stand on top
Let me be
Masters of the land
Take me now
Always get our share
Take me there
Clear away the Barricades
Bring me home
And we're still there!
Bring me home
We know where the wind is blowing
[Valjean sighs]
Money is the stuff we smell
And when we're rich as Croesus
Fantine :
Jesus, won't we see you all in Hell
[Fantine appears on scene, standing beside
Valjean]
[Both get dropped off at the side and leave the
Monsieur, I bless your name
scene, blinds are pulled down]
EPILOGUE
Valjean :
[Valjean is sitting on a chair, looking weak]
I am ready Fantine!
Cosette, my child [caresses her cheek]
Fantine : Am I forgiven now?
Monsieur, lay down your burden Thank god, thank god
I've lived to see this day
Valjean :
At the end of my days [Marius arrives]
Marius :
Fantine : It's you who must forgive a thoughtless fool
You've raised my child with love It's you who must forgive a thankless man
[Caresses his cheek] It's thanks to you that I am living
[Valjean begins to tear up]
Valjean : Again I lay down my life at your feet
She's the best of my life Cosette, your father is a saint
When they wounded me
Fantine : He took me from the barricade
And you will be with God Carried like a babe
[Kisses Valjean on the forehead] And brought me home
To you
Valjean :
"Ah, Fantine.." [Whispers] Valjean :
Now you are here
[Cosette runs to the scene, kneeling beside Again beside me
Valjean and taking his hand in hers]
Now I can die in peace
Cosette :
For now my life is blessed
Papa, papa, I do not understand
Are you all right?
Cosette :
Why did you go away?
You will live
Papa, you're going to live
Valjean :
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye!
Valjean :
Valjean : Forgive me all my trespasses
Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die And take me to your glory
I'll obey [Valjean loses consciousness, passing away
and Fantine leaves the scene]
I will try
On this page
[Cosette begins to break into sobs and Marius
I write my last confession
holds her in his arms]
[Hands a letter to Cosette from his coat]
Read it well
Fantine : (Valjean)
When I, at last, am sleeping
Take my hand
It's the story
I'll lead you to salvation
Of one who turned from hating
Take my love
The man who only learned to love
(For love is everlasting
When you were in his keeping
And remember
The truth that once was spoken
[Cosette begins to cry]
To love another person
Is to see the face of God)
Fantine :
[Stays behind Valjean as he relaxes his body
[Cosette and Marius begin to hear a crowd
against the chair]
singing in the distance]
Come with me
Where chains will never bind you (I'm ready
[Pull down the blinds]
Fantine)
---
All your mercy
[Pull up the blinds]
At last, at last behind you
Lord in Heaven
[The entire cast is found in the middle of the
Look down on him in mercy
stage, singing in cheer while waving red flags,
[Fantine keeps her arms around Valjean] confetti falling from above]
Do you hear the people sing?
Entire cast : Say, do you hear the distant drums?
Do you hear the people sing It is the future that they bring
Lost in the valley of the night? When tomorrow comes!
It is the music of a people Aah!
Who are climbing to the light Aah!
For the wretched of the earth Aah!
There is a flame that never dies Tomorrow comes!
Even the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise
They will live again in freedom END
In the garden of the Lord
We will walk behind the ploughshare
We will put away the sword
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
