My Role in relation to the Provision for Promoting Physical

Development in My Setting

Every morning when I first see the children, I start the day by singing a
song and showing them what actions to do. This allows them to get up,
jump around and copy my actions allowing them to get a small bit of
exercise early in the morning. I usually aim to plan two activities
everyday with one of them being focussed on physical development. An
example of the activities I often do is play-baking pastries using play-
dough with the children. I show them how to knead, roll and make balls
out of the dough and then I try my best to encourage them to do the
same. This gives them an opportunity to hone their fine motor skills and
practise their gripping and handling of a variety of objects. I believe an
area where I could improve is my knowledge on creating outdoor
activities and activities that are focused on developing fine motor skills
and as such I would love to participate in more training so I can develop
my own skills further when it comes to this.

My Role in Meeting the Needs and Interests of Children in

My Setting

We have a child in my room who has always been interested in the

tricycles outside on the decky but they are always too afraid to go and try
them. When I see obstacles to a child’s interest such as the example
above, I try and reassure the children by doing the action myself and
then trying to convince them into copying. In this case, while trying my
best not to break anything, I sat on the tricycle and showed the child how
fun it was and how much I was enjoying myself. After seeing this on a
few occasions, the child, while still being visibly afraid, came and sat
down on a tricycle next to me, allowing them to explore what they were
interested in without being stopped by their fear. I noticed that another
child was hesitant to participate in any activities with other children,
however I am aware of the importance of ensuring social interaction so I
convinced them to sit with another child with myself in between. By
playing with both children at the same time, I helped show them how
much fun they could have with others so that they would show more of
an interest in social situations. An area where I could improve is
bettering my ability to use a child’s interests when convincing them to do
something they may be afraid of, especially if doing so would help
ensure I meet the child’s needs.

My Role in relation to the Provision for Promoting the

Personal, Social and Emotional Development of Children in
My Setting

I saw that a child was hesitant to interact with others especially because
they were new to the nursery. So I decided to help them get more
relaxed and show emotion and compassion. I took a doll and began to
hug it, kiss it and sing for it so that it would go to sleep. The child saw me
doing this and later on in the day, I saw them picking out the same doll
and then repeating my actions. They hugged and kissed the doll and
also murmured to it as if they were trying to sing it lullabies so it would
sleep. I was so proud of them that I asked them for a hug and they
hesitated and gave me a big hug. Another time, I could tell that two
children were avoiding playing with each other and never interacted. So I
decided to convince them to play with me but when I suggested a game
where they would have to hold hands they refused to do it. I then
decided that I should show them how much they were missing out so I
brought two other children to play the game with and then asked them
again. This time they did hold each other’s hands and they had a great
time and at the end I asked them to hug each other and they did. An
area where I could improve is helping introduce children to new groups
and helping them find new interests. I feel like one way that I could do
this is planning new activities that the children have not done before to
help them find new interests and also interact with different people.
