Ergonomic Computer Workstations

Objective:

This assignment aims to develop your understanding of the importance of ergonomics in computer
workstations. Students will compare and contrast well-designed ergonomic workstations with poorly
designed ones to recognize the impact on user comfort, health, and productivity.

1) Explain what ergonomics is and why it is important to consider this as it relates to computer
workstations. Some key terms are posture, repetitive strain injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders.

2) Research some ergonomic guidelines. List and explain some recommendations for chair and desk
height, monitor placement, keyboard and mouse positioning, lighting, and overall workspace
organization.

3) Describe a poorly designed workstation. Explain some common ergonomic mistakes. Include images.
You may use the internet and you can include fun or amusing answers/images for this part.

4) Describe a well-designed ergonomic workstation, outlining how the components are well designed in
terms of ergonomics. Include details about adjustable furniture, proper lighting, and additional
ergonomic accessories. Create a workspace by “purchasing” various items such as a desk, chair, lights,
and anything else you would like to include. Show what it would look like with images. You workstation
should be a complete area where someone could work comfortably for long periods of time. Discuss the
benefits of the workspace you created. There is not limit or budget. You can be unrealistic or silly in your
design if you like.

You may create a slideshow, document, website or whatever format you prefer.

Assessment:

Thoroughness of research and understanding of ergonomic principles.

Clarity and organization of the comparison chart and case studies.

Insightful analysis of health implications and user experiences.

Well-supported recommendations for creating an ideal ergonomic workstation.
