Describing Transformations

1) The graph of y = f(x) is transformed to the graph of y = (x – 3).

Describe the transformation.

We see that 3 has been subtracted from the x value which means
that we are going to shift the graph through 3 units in the +ve x
direction.
3
The transformation is a translation through ( )

2) A curve has equation y = x2 + 2x – 3 and is translated through ( ).
0
Find and simplify the new equation of the curve.

If we are translating we are adding something to the x value. This time

we have translated through 2 so we subtract 2 from the x values.
y = (x - 2)2 + 2(x - 2) – 3
y = x2 - 4x + 4 + 2x - 4 – 3
y = x2 - 2x – 3

3) The equation of a curve is y = x4 – 4x. Find the equation of the curve if

the curve is reflected in the y axis.
If the curve is reflected in the y axis it means that we replace x with -x
y = (-x)4 – 4(-x)
y = x4 + 4x
4) The graph of y = f(x) is transformed onto the graph of y = 4 – f(x).
Describe the transformations that result in the new graph.
We have -f(x) which means that we reflect in the x axis and then the 4 is
added which means we translate 4 units in y direction
The transformations are a reflection in x axis followed by a translation of

5) Describe the transformation that transforms the graph of y = f(x) onto
the graph of y = f(3x).

The 3 is multiplying the x so it is a stretch in the x direction with stretch

factor 1/3.

6) The graph of y = f(x) is transformed onto the graph of y = 3f(x-2).

Describe the transformations that lead to this graph

2
2 is – from x so it is a translation through ( )
0
3 multiplies the function so it is a stretch in y direction with stretch
factor 3
