MCS Lecture 6

The document discusses sampling distributions in probability and statistics, explaining the concepts of population distribution and sampling distribution. It highlights the differences between sampling from normally distributed and non-normally distributed populations, as well as the importance of mean and standard deviation in these distributions. Additionally, it covers the concept of proportions and their relation to sampling distributions.

Sampling Distributions
Population and Sampling Distributions
Population Distribution
 The population distribution is the probability distribution derived from the
information on all elements of a population.

Sampling Distribution
 Sampling Distribution of 𝒙 ഥ:
 The probability distribution of 𝑥ҧ is called its sampling distribution. It lists the various
values that 𝑥ҧ can assume and the probability of each value of 𝑥.ҧ
 In general, the probability distribution of a sample statistic is called its sampling
distribution.

Shape of the Sampling Distribution of 𝒙
 The shape of the sampling distribution of 𝒙
ഥ relates to the following two cases.
1. The population from which samples are drawn has a normal distribution.

2. The population from which samples are drawn does not have a normal distribution.

 Sampling from a Normally Distributed Population

Population and Sample Proportions
The concept of proportion is the same as the concept of relative frequency discussed in
Chapter 2 and the concept of probability of success in a binomial experiment. The relative
frequency of a category or class gives the proportion of the sample or population that
belongs to that category or class. Similarly, the probability of success in a binomial
experiment represents the proportion of the sample or population that possesses a given
characteristic.
