Class 11 Trigonometry Important Formulas & Tricks

1. Basic Trigonometric Ratios

sin(theta) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
cos(theta) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
tan(theta) = Opposite / Adjacent
cot(theta) = 1 / tan(theta) = Adjacent / Opposite
sec(theta) = 1 / cos(theta) = Hypotenuse / Adjacent
cosec(theta) = 1 / sin(theta) = Hypotenuse / Opposite

Trick: Remember SOH-CAH-TOA (Sine = Opp/Hyp, Cos = Adj/Hyp, Tan = Opp/Adj).

2. Reciprocal Identities
sin(theta) = 1 / cosec(theta)
cos(theta) = 1 / sec(theta)
tan(theta) = 1 / cot(theta)
cot(theta) = 1 / tan(theta)
sec(theta) = 1 / cos(theta)
cosec(theta) = 1 / sin(theta)

3. Pythagorean Identities
sin^2(theta) + cos^2(theta) = 1
1 + tan^2(theta) = sec^2(theta)
1 + cot^2(theta) = cosec^2(theta)

Trick: Remember 'Some People Have' (sin^2 + cos^2 = 1) and '1 + tan^2 = sec^2'.

4. Angle Sum and Difference Formulas

sin(A ± B) = sinA cosB + cosA sinB
cos(A ± B) = cosA cosB - sinA sinB
tan(A ± B) = (tanA + tanB) / (1 - tanA tanB)

5. Double Angle Formulas

sin 2A = 2 sinA cosA
cos 2A = cos^2(A) - sin^2(A) = 2 cos^2(A) - 1 = 1 - 2 sin^2(A)
tan 2A = 2 tanA / (1 - tan^2(A))
6. Half-Angle Formulas
sin(A/2) = sqrt[(1 - cosA) / 2]
cos(A/2) = sqrt[(1 + cosA) / 2]
tan(A/2) = sqrt[(1 - cosA) / (1 + cosA)]

7. Product to Sum & Sum to Product Formulas

sinA sinB = 1/2 [cos(A - B) - cos(A + B)]
cosA cosB = 1/2 [cos(A - B) + cos(A + B)]
sinA cosB = 1/2 [sin(A + B) + sin(A - B)]

8. Trigonometric Values of Standard Angles

sin 0° = 0, sin 30° = 1/2, sin 45° = 1/sqrt(2), sin 60° = sqrt(3)/2, sin 90° = 1
cos 0° = 1, cos 30° = sqrt(3)/2, cos 45° = 1/sqrt(2), cos 60° = 1/2, cos 90° = 0
tan 0° = 0, tan 30° = 1/sqrt(3), tan 45° = 1, tan 60° = sqrt(3), tan 90° = undefined

Trick: Remember sin values as sqrt(0)/2, sqrt(1)/2, sqrt(2)/2, sqrt(3)/2, sqrt(4)/2.

9. Quadrants and Signs (ASTC Rule)

1st Quadrant: All positive
2nd Quadrant: sin & cosec positive
3rd Quadrant: tan & cot positive
4th Quadrant: cos & sec positive

Trick: Remember 'All Silver Tea Cups' (ASTC) for quadrant signs.
