their notesheet. Use point form, Times New Roman font 12, single spacing.

1. Breastfeeding should be supported in the workplace


OPN: in working women, there are barriers when combining mother and work role (esp. during the
breastfeeding period), work environment should accommodate the needs of breastfeeding women.
 Leads to variety of health benefits for both mother and child [Zhuang]
 For many women -> is a challenge to continue to breastfeed after returning to work (even within
a friendly environment) [Zhuang]
 Lactating women often report experiencing barriers to breastfeeding (when they return to work)
- Identified 3 factors of concern for lactating mother returning to work [Zhuang]
 Mothers who work need to be supported -> e.g. who need to work to provide for their family /
wants to develop their professional life -> all mothers (include working mothers) have the right
to give the best nutrition to their babies [Lisbona]
 So organizations must support breastfeeding -> if not, make them choose between employment
and breastfeeding ->labor market may lose important talent sources [Lisbona]
2. Ways to meet the demands
 Fostered Family friendly workplaces
- Encourage employees to be supportive of lactating colleague [Zhuang]
- enhance employee recruitment and retention [Zhuang]
 Coworkers’ support
- To increase breastfeeding rates and help mothers achieve the lactation duration that both
mothers and babies desire. [Lisbona]
- 1998,the Oregon Department of Human Services Health Division –project –give
certificate /2001, Arizona Department of Health Services- policy- mother can take child (<4
months)[ Shealy]
 Maternity leave (22.8 % of women received paid maternity leave) [Zhuang]
