Week3 Problems

This document outlines problems for MATHE1417 for Week 3, focusing on various exercises related to curves, arc lengths, and parametrizations. It includes specific tasks such as showing regularity of curves, computing arc lengths for given equations, and finding parametrizations by arc length. The problems reference exercises from two textbooks on differential geometry.

Problem 1. ([1] Page 12, Exercise 1.4.) (We extend the definition of I to be I = (0, π)) Let
α : (0, π) → R2 to be α(t) := sin(t), cos(t) + ln tan 2t .The trace of α is called a tractrix.

π
a. Show that the curve α is regular except at t = .
2
b. Show that the length of the segment of the tangent of the tractrix between the point of
tangency and the y axis is always 1.

Problem 2. ([2], Page 67, Exercise 1.11) Compute the arc length of the following curves:
a. x = a cos5 t, y = a sin5 t, t ∈ [0, 2π].
2 2 2
b. x 3 + y 3 = a 3

Problem 3. ([2], Page 67, Exercise 1.12) The following curves are given in form of polar
coordinates, for a is a positive constant. Compute the arc length of each curve:
a. r = a(1 + cos ϕ), ϕ ∈ [0, 2π].
b. r = a cos3 ϕ3 , ϕ ∈ [0, 2π].

Problem 4. ([2], Page 67, Exercise 1.14) Given that a is a positive constant. Compute the
arc length of the following curve:
a
x3 = 3a2 y, 2xz = a2 , 3 ≤ y ≤ 9a.

Problem 5. ([2], Page 77, Exercise 1.15) Given that a is a positive constant. Find a
parametrization by arc length (unit-speed) of each following curve:
a. x = a cos3 t, y = a sin3 t.
ex + e−x
b. y = cosh xa (recall that cosh x = ).
2
t

c. x = a ln tan 2 + cos t , y = a sin t.
d. r = a(1 + cos ϕ).
e. x = a(cos t + t sin t), y = a(sin t − t cos t).
