Lecture 2

The document provides examples of finding values of functions, including polynomial and piecewise functions, as well as compositions of functions. It also discusses the domain and range of a function, illustrating how to determine these for specific functions. Various examples are presented to clarify these concepts.

Function

Type 1: Finding value of a function:

3𝑥 2 −1
Ex. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥+1
, then find 𝑓(2) =?

Solution: Given,

3𝑥 2 −1
𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥+1

3(2)2 −1
∴ 𝑓(2) = 2.2+1

12−1
= 5

11
= 5
(ans.)

1
Ex. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 1, then find 𝑓 (𝑥) , 𝑓(−𝑥), 𝑓(√𝑥), 𝑓(𝑡 2 ).

Solution: Given,

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 1

1 1 2
∴ 𝑓 (𝑥) = (𝑥) + 1

1
= 𝑥2 + 1

𝑓(−𝑥) = (−𝑥)2 + 1

= 𝑥2 + 1
2
𝑓(√𝑥) = (√𝑥) + 1

=𝑥+1

𝑓(𝑡 2 ) = (𝑡 2 )2 + 1

= 𝑡4 + 1
1
Ex. If 𝑔(𝑥) = √𝑥, then find 𝑔(5𝑠 + 2), 𝑔(√𝑥 + 2), 𝑔 ( ).
√𝑥

Piecewise Function:
1
, 𝑥>3
Ex. If 𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑥 , then find 𝑓(−2), 𝑓(3), 𝑓(4), 𝑓(√2), 𝑓(3𝑡).
2𝑥, 𝑥 ≤ 3
Solution: Given,
1
, 𝑥>3
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑥
2𝑥, 𝑥 ≤ 3

Now, 𝑓(−2) = 2. (−2) = −4

𝑓(3) = 2.3 = 6

𝑓(√2) = 2. √2 = 2√2

1
𝑓(4) = 4

1
𝑓(3𝑡) = 3𝑡 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑡 > 1

And 𝑓(3𝑡) = 2.3𝑡 𝑖𝑓 𝑡 ≤ 1.

Ex. If 𝑔(𝑥) = {√𝑥 + 1, 𝑥 ≥ 1, then find 𝑔(3), 𝑔(−1), 𝑔(𝜋).

3, 𝑥<1

Composition of Function:

𝑓𝑜𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥))

𝑔𝑜𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))

Ex. If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 , 𝑔(𝑥) = √1 − 𝑥, then find 𝑓𝑜𝑔(𝑥), 𝑔𝑜𝑓(𝑥).

Solution: Given,

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 , 𝑔(𝑥) = √1 − 𝑥

𝑓𝑜𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥))

= 𝑓(√1 − 𝑥)
2
= (√1 − 𝑥)

=1−𝑥

𝑔𝑜𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑓(𝑥))

= 𝑔(𝑥 2 )

= √1 − 𝑥 2

𝜋 𝜋
Ex. If 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝜋 − 𝑥 2 and ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥, then find 𝑔(ℎ(0)), ℎ (𝑔 (√ 2 )) , 𝑔(𝑔(1)), ℎ (ℎ ( 2 )).
Domain and Range of a Function:
1
Ex. Find the domain and Range of 𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥+1.

Solution: Given,
1
𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥+1

Here, 5𝑥 + 1 = 0
1
=> 𝑥 = − 5

1 1
So if 𝑥 = − 5, then 𝑓 will be undefined. Therefore all values of 𝑥 except 𝑥 = − 5 will be the domain of 𝑓.

1
Domain= ℝ − {− 5}

And Range= ℝ − {0}

𝑎𝑥+𝑏 𝑑 𝑎
Note: If 𝑓(𝑥) = , then domain = ℝ − {− } and Range = ℝ − { }
