Reflection Paper
Work-based learning (WBL) is an approach to teaching and learning relating to
the workplace, connecting academic knowledge to practical application in the workplace. It enables students to gain hands-on experience with real world applications, develop technical capabilities, innovate solutions, and build their resume. WBL becomes important as a means of bridging the gap between the theory taught and the practice experienced, helping to mold the student within the theatre of learning in a way which enables it to translate the concepts learned into real-life scenarios. While I have not experienced WBL professionally yet, I have noted the experience particularly in other domains such as education and technical domains. Student teachers, for example, get real-world experience in classroom practicums, and students in electronics get learn-by-doing experience in apprenticeships and projects. Far too many people mistakenly believe that WBL develops only technical skills, in fact, the experiences mentioned develop other skills, such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability, which are critical in every field. If I go into Electronics teaching in the future, I am going to use WBL in my teaching delivery in the learning activities, for example, building and testing a circuit, exploratory work, and take students to the industry and do the projects. I will also promote internships and professional collaborations to ensure real-world exposure to students. Moreover, I will be learning by attending training programs or mentorships in the industry so that I can keep myself up to date with the technological changes happening out there. With WBL, I will provide a more interesting and impactful experience for my students that set them up for success in their career.
