INSTRUCTIONS

1. This paper consists of eight questions.

2. Answer all questions in section A and three questions in Section B.

Q1. 𝑧1 = 2 + 3𝑖 , 𝑧2 = 3 + 2𝑖, 𝑧3 = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑖 , 𝑎, 𝑏 ∈ ℝ.
a) Find the exact value of |𝑧1 + 𝑧2 | [2]
𝑧1 𝑧3
Given that 𝑤 = 𝑧2

b) Find 𝑤 in terms of 𝑎 and 𝑏, giving your answers in the form 𝑥 + 𝑖𝑦, 𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ ℝ.

[3]
17 7
Given also that 𝑤 = 13 − 13 𝑖

c) Find the value of 𝑎 and the value of 𝑏. [3]

d) Find arg 𝑤, giving your answer to three decimal places. [2]
Q2. a) solve the equation 2𝑧 4 − 𝑧 3 + 33𝑧 2 − 26𝑧 + 10 = 0, given that one of the
roots is 3 + 𝑖. [4]
1 1 3
b) Prove that 𝐶𝑜𝑠 4 𝜃 = 8 𝐶𝑜𝑠4𝜃 + 2 𝐶𝑜𝑠2𝜃 + 8 [5]
𝑧+𝑖
c) sketch the loci represented by |𝑧−𝑖| = 1 [3]
𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 13
Q3. a) 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = 4
2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 7

Solve the above system of simultaneous equations by manipulating their
augmented matrix into reduced row echelon form. No credit will be given for
alternative solutions methods. [6]
b) Solve the following system of equations
4𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 7𝑧 = 2
10𝑥 − 4𝑦 − 5𝑧 = 50
4𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 9𝑧 = −2
using the
i) Gauss-Jordan method, [6]
ii) Cramer’s method. [6]
c) Find the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of the following
1 1 0
3 × 3 matrix 𝐴 = (1 2 1). [6]
0 1 1
Q4. a) Use the Gram-Schmidt process to transform the following set of
vectors into an orthonormal set :

1 0 0
{𝑣1 , 𝑣2 , 𝑣3 } = {(1) , (1) , (0)} [8]
1 1 1

2 −1 1
b) If A=( 4 −3 0), use Cayley-Hamilton theorem to find 𝐴−1 , 𝐴3 , 𝐴6 .[6]
−3 3 1

c) Write the vector 𝑣 = (4, 9, 19) as a linear combination of the vectors

𝑢1 = (1, −2, 3), 𝑢2 = (3, −7, 10), 𝑢3 = (2, 1,9). [5]

Q5. The points 𝐴(2,4,4), 𝐵(6,8,4), 𝐶(6,4,0), 𝐷(2,0,0) and 𝑀(4,4,2) are given. The
straight line 𝑙1 has equation 𝑟1 = 6𝑖 + 4𝑗 + λ(𝑖 + 𝑗) where 𝜆 is a scalar
parameter. The straight line 𝑙2 passes through the points 𝐶 and 𝑀.

a) Find a vector equation of 𝑙2 . [3]

b) Show that ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵 is parallel to 𝑙1. [4]
c) Verify that 𝐷 lies on 𝑙1. [4]
