MIS 101 – Exam #1 Study Guide

This is the study guide for Exam #1 for MIS 101. It covers chapters 1 through 4.

During the exam you will be able to use one page of hand-written notes, one side, with
your name clearly written on it (you can put your name on the back). These notes should be
turned in with the exam. Most questions will be multiple choice, with a few fill-in-the-blank
questions.

Questions can be from the book, slides or lecture. When a topic is listed, assume that you
should study more than just its name.

Note that some things that are on this study guide may not appear in the exam. Similarly,
there may be things on the exam that are not on the study guide. However, it is intended that if
you thoroughly study using this study guide, you will be well-prepared.

Chapter 1:

2. The “laws” of computer technology as discussed in the class and book, and the general
ideas behind these “laws”
3. Non-routine skills
4. What does an MIS consist of?
5. Components of an IS
6. Knowledge, information and data
7. The six criteria of data quality (remember your instructor defines these a little bit
differently than the book!)

Chapter 2:
1. Porter’s Five Forces and four generic strategies
2. Value chains and business processes
3. The types of business process activities, and the categories these belong to
4. Business process design theory – what it is and what it expects
5. First-mover versus second-mover advantages
6. The ways a product can incorporate IS
7. The ways that business processes can incorporate IS
