Assignment 1

This document outlines an assignment for a Manufacturing Science course, ME 2230, due on February 19, 2024. It includes four problems related to casting processes, including calculations for mold filling time, centrifugal casting parameters, riser shape comparisons, and clamping force estimation for a mold. Each problem requires application of principles from statics and dynamics as well as material properties.

Manufacturing Science - 1

ME 2230

Assignment 1.

Due date: 19/02/2024, 11:59 p.m.

1. The above figure shows a mold along with the riser for casting a part of dimensions
20 cm x 20 cm x 5 cm. Determine the area 𝐴𝑔 such that the mold and the riser get
filled up in 10 sec after the downsprue has been filled. Assume negligible friction
effects and that a flat gating is attached i.e. 𝐴3 ≫ 𝐴𝑔

2. A steel pipe is made by centrifugal casting. The length of the pipe is 3 m, the diameter
is 1 m, and the thickness is 10 mm. Using normal equations from statics and
dynamics, find the rotational speed required to maintain a centripetal force that is 70
times the weight of the pipe.

3. The optimum shape of a riser is spherical to ensure that it cools more slowly than the
casting it feeds. Spherically shaped risers, however, are difficult to cast. The shape of
a blind riser that is easy to mold, but also has the smallest possible surface area-to-
volume ratio consists of a cylindrical and hemispherical portion. Compare the
solidification time of the riser shown in the figure to that of a riser shaped like a right
circular cylinder. Assume that the volume of each riser is the same, and that for each
the height is equal to the diameter.
4. a) Estimate the clamping force (F) required to keep off the separation of the two
halves of the mold (cope and drag) under the pressure of molten metal (buoyancy) for
the following casting and mold parameters: casting shape and properties: solid,
spherical steel casting with a diameter of 150 mm (D) and density of 8000 kg/m3;
dimension of each flask: 600 mm x 600 mm x 350 mm deep; the parting line is at the
middle of the part; density of the sand: 1600 kg/m3.

b) Plot a graph of F vs D (10 < D < 300)
