Design procedure of riveted joints
1.To find thickness of the plate if not given.
Knowing the diameter of boiler shell, internal or blow of pressure, desired efficiency of the joint and allowable tensile stress for the plate material find the thickness of the boiler shell using equation no. 5.1. 2. Find the diameter of rivet using Prof. Unwin's formula from equation no. 5.11(d) Find diameter of the rivet hole by adding 1 to 1.5 mm to the nominal diameter of the rivet. Hence find standard diameter of the rivet from table 5.3(b) 3. Sketch the joint as per the specifications like lap joint, butt joint, single riveted double riveted, single strap, double straps equal or unequal etc. Hence find number of rivets in single shear or double shear or combination of single shear and double shear. 4. Find the pitch by equating tearing resistance of the plate to shearing resistance of the rivets (refer equation no.5.12(a). Find minimum pitch equation no. 5.12 (c) . Find maximum permissible pitch. Equation no.. 5.12(b). Check whether the calculated pitch is less than the maximum permissible pitch. If calculated pitch is greater than the calculated pitch then restrict the pitch to maximum permissible pitch. 5. Find margin equation no. 5.16 Find transverse pitch refer equation nos. 5.14(a) to 5.15(b) depending on the type of joint and type of riveting. Find thickness of straps refer equation nos. 5.4(a) to 5.4(f) depending on the type of joint and type of riveting. Find shank length refer equation no. 5.5. Find width of straps from the arrangement depending on the type of joint. 6. Find strength of the joint. Tearing resistance of solid plate refer equation no. 5.6(a) Tearing resistance of the plate refer equation no. 5.6(b) Shearing resistance of the joint refer equation no. 5.6(d) Crushing resistance of the joint refer equation no. 5.6(e) In butt joints of unequal width failure may take place due to combined action. In such problems apart from calculating the above resistances, calculate resistances by referring to equation nos. 5.8(a), 5.9(a) and 5.9(c). Finally calculate efficiency of the joint = least of all the above resistances / strength of solid plate. Check from table 5.1 for that type of joint whether the calculated efficiency is more than the desired efficiency. Note: 1. If thickness of the plate is less than 8 mm then find the diameter of the rivet by equating shearing resistance of a rivet to crushing resistance of a rivet. 2. If the efficiency is not given then select efficiency from Table 5.1 3. If the two plates are of different thickness as in the case of lap joint then consider the smaller thickness for design purpose. 4. Refer table 5.3(c) for standard thickness of plates. 5. For coefficient k1 in equation 5.12 (b) refer table no. 5.4(a) 6. For diagonal pitch in staggered joint refer equation no. 5.17(a) and 5.17(b). 7. For lap joint and single strap butt joint n2 = 0. For double straps (equal) butt joint n1= 0. For unequal strap butt joint both n1 and n2 are present. 8. For lap joint ti = t 9. For the calculation of n1 and n2 consider repeated pitch group only. In other words find number of rivets in that pitch length.
