“Why does Education Matter?

By Niko Nesmith

Education is defined as the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a

school or university. Education is important because it provided the knowledge and skills that I
will need to navigate life effectively. There are key reasons why a college education is and
should be important: Career Advancement: Higher education often opens doors to endless job
opportunities which in turn can lead to higher income potential. Critical Thinking Skills: Will
give me the ability to analyze information, solve problems, and make sound and informed
decisions. Personal development: Learning new things and gaining more knowledge will help
build my confidence and self-esteem. Social Impact: As an educated individual I will be able to
be a more productive citizen and give back to my community in a positive manner.
Adaptability: Education will prepare me with the skills and tools to learn new things and to be
able to adapt challenging/changing situations that life can deal you.

A college education helps to builds character. Attending college will help me learn who I am,
what my beliefs are, and what role I will play in the world. Furthering my education by going to
college will allow me to not only increase my earning potential (make me more marketable),
provide specialized skills in a chosen field, and unlimited networking opportunities among peers
and professionals. My dream is to attend a HBCU (Historically Black College University) like
both of my parents, grandmother, and great-grandfather. As an only child I fells that going away
to college will expose me to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences that will contribute to my
personal growth. It will also help me transition from my final teen years into adulthood.

College isn’t just about education. It also teaches you life skills. Many of life’s challenges will
present themselves in college and I will have to choose between right from wrong. Some
valuable skills I hope to acquire are time management, reading comprehension, and effective
communication skills. Going to college gives you a chance to meet different people from all
walks of life. I will have the opportunity to make valuable connections with professors and
counselors. I also want to join Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc like my dad so that I can
experience the true meaning of brotherhood and to align myself with other young African
American males who share similar values and interests.

In today’s highly competitive economy, employment options are very limited for those who
choose to enter the workforce right out of high school as opposed to those who choose to attend
college. Most high school graduates typically only find jobs in the service industry which is
often associated with minimum wage and little to no job advancement. A college education is an
investment for not just myself but my family as well. Graduation from college will not only
open the door to endless opportunities and more completive pay but will also better equip me
with the necessary skills to continue moving up the corporate job ladder in my future career and
life in general. A college education is priceless. This is the one thing that once you obtained it no
one can take it from you. With a college education sky’s the limit if you have that “Mamba
Mentality “, desire, drive, and right attitude to succeed and to never settle for less.
