Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the

problem, scope and delimitations, significance of the study, and definition of
terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Social networks are currently being used regularly by millions of people;

therefore, the 21st century has been described as a century of technological
advancement. This is due to fact that it is the century which is credited to
making the world a global village. Social networks include a variety of web-
based tools and services that are designed to promote community development
through collaboration and information sharing (Arnold & Paulus,
2010;_Junko,_Helbergert_&_Loken_2011)

Social media provides opportunities for individual expression as well as

interaction with other users (Arnold & Paulus, 2010). Social media networks
include; Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, WhatsApp, Instagram, Imo and many
others which were introduced in the early 2000 (Aida & Egan, 2004). These
social medias enable individuals to personally share, connect and interact with
a list of other users who share the same connection with them and have played
a crucial role in bridging boundaries and crossing the seas and enabling them
to communicate on a common platform. An interesting aspect of social media
is that it is not limited to desktop or laptop computers but could be accessed
through mobile applications and smart phones making it very accessible and
easy to use which has brought the work to a personal level.
Globally, social media usage has increased significantly (Statista, 2021).
According to studies in social media usage, three billion people worldwide are
victims of cyberbullying, addiction, self-harm, and depression (Kemp, 2020).
The growing popularity of social media has increased the amount of time that
people spend of an average of two hours per day on various social updates
(Abbott, 2017).

Social networking and social media have been strongly influenced by the
introduction and rapid growth of information and communication technologies.
We may now see our loved ones on the screen with the touch of a button, no
matter where they live (Giatho, 2018). One of the well-known social media is
Facebook that in the first quarter of 2018, had around 2.19 billion active
Facebook members globally (Facebook, 2018). The advancement of mobile
technology may play a significant role in restructuring social networks. Mobile
devices have made it possible to access the internet from anywhere, at any
time, and in any way. This has resulted in a significant increase in the total
number of minutes spent online. This gives them the ability to regularly log in
to many devices (Giatho, 2018). Despite the numerous advantages and
beneficial consequences of utilizing social media, the current Cambridge
Analytica controversy has sparked questions about the role of the role of media,
social media, and social networking sites in our lives.

For most college and university students, social media is considered a form
of social support. Still, it can also harm their mental health, especially those
who already have high levels of anxiety and depression (Charoensukmongkol,
2018). Social media use could put the global population's mental health and
well-being at risk. Sharing, tweeting, texting, and other typical social media
activity have been connected to an increase in stress (Tang et al., 2013).
According to Weng and Menczer (2015), the major negative social impact of
increased social media usage is that it has become a serious source of stress,
because people frequently share a wide range of feeds, stories, and comments
on topics ranging from politics and economics to social and personal
concerns. As a result, someone who spends an average of 2 hours a day on
social media platforms will accumulate a large amount of negative news,
stories, and information, which will affect their overall stress level (Ley et al.,
2014).

Understanding why students use online social media sites is crucial for the
academic community, as this new communication platform exhibits its
important impact on students’ motivation to learn, affective learning, and 1
classroom climate (Mazer, Murphy & Simonds, 2007). Social media is cutting
across all facets of society with its positive and negative influence in general.
The social networking sites are gaining a lot of popularity these days with
almost all of the educated youth using at least one of such sites. A number of
studies have been conducted to find out the influence of social media on
academic performance of students. Current research has indicated that using
social media as an educational tool can lead to increased student engagement
(Draper, Buil, Hernández-Ortega & Sese, 2008). Nelson and Kuh (2005) also
reported that students who use information technology for academics also have
a higher likelihood of contributing and participating in active academic
collaboration with other students. Among the vast variety of online tools which
are available for communication, social network sites have become the most
modern and influencing tool for connecting people throughout the world
(Aghazamani, 2010).

On the contrary, a study conducted by Karadkar (2015) indicates that social

media networks affect students negatively because students spend more time
on social media at the expense of their books. Also other studies have found
that social media negatively influence students' results as they spend as
considerable time on social media rather than preparing adequately for class
(Annetta, Minogue, Holmes & Cheng 2009; Junco, 2012). Students neglect their
studies by spending time on social media websites rather than studying or
interacting with people in person (Karadkar, 2015). Actively and frequently
participating in social media networks can negatively affect their grades, or
hamper their journey to their future carriers (Karadkar, 2015). Walsh (2013)
wrote that students who spent the most time using social media had fewer
academic behaviors such as completing homework and attending class, lower
academic confidence and more problems affecting their school work, like lack
of sleep and substance use. According to the Internet Usage Statistics (2014),
the penetration of internet on the African continent was 26.5%. According to a
survey conducted by PEW Research Center (2016), 72% of high school
students spend time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp among others
(Internet World Statistics, 2015). By December 2012, the number of Facebook
users in Africa was 51,612,460. In Ghana, the number of internet users as at
June 2014, was 5,171,993 with 20% internet penetration. Out of the total
internet users in Ghana, 1,630,420 users were on Facebook, WhatsApp,
Instagram among others. (Internet World Statistics, 2015)

The aim of this study is to determine the positive and the negative impacts
of social medias on student’s learning. As it known, the internet has advantages
and disadvantages that will affect people’s lives especially those who
considered it as their habitual activity. The internet serves as abundant part of
today’s modern life, and it’s hard to detach it since it acts as an integral part of
human’s day to day life.

2.1 Related Literature

A. Local Literature

According to Rejie D. Astodello (December 11, 2016) Kalinga, Tabuk City -

Nowadays, people all over the world are enjoying the benefits of using
technology. In the past, communication and the exchange of ideas between
people were limited due to distance, race, and even religion. But now these
barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and knowledge. Because in
the modern world of social media, you can easily express your thoughts through
social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

Students are highly motivated to use social media and most use it to meet
social needs rather than academic needs. They are free to do whatever they
want. You can upload or download data, make new friends and tell other
people's lies, and create other online identities that you wouldn't accept in the
real world. It has been found that most students today, especially high school
students, spend most of their time chatting with friends, playing online games,
and watching videos, rather than reading for class, submitting assignments, or
doing other academic work. The main reason is social media addiction to kill
boredom and distract your work during study time while working or searching
for online resources. The dark side of this is that many parents have caught on,
and some of the students have become lazy and don't care about going to
school. This may be due to the wide range of opportunities to participate in the
world, due to the poor performance of the school.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, the number of active

users of Facebook, the largest social networking company, reached 1.49 billion
in 2015, the number of annual users. As part of the survey, 72% of high school
students and 78% of college students spend time on social networking sites,
including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Viber and email. This
number indicates how much time the student spends. Communities participate
in connected virtual worlds. Students prefer online sites as reliable sources of
information because they are all in one package. A 2003 study by Gagne found
that the media often overestimates certain percentages of students. A
stimulating environment for better learning. Researchers have also found that
using certain types of social media can have beneficial effects, helping students
not only meet academic requirements, but also assert their identity and build
and improve skills.

B. Foreign Literature

Ul Haq & Chand (2012) investigated the usage and popularity of famous
social media network (Facebook) among university students with special focus
on the gender based comparison and the impact of the selected social medium
on their academic performance. The two researchers evaluate the pattern and
frequency of Facebook use among university students while focusing gender
that majority of the users (61%) agree that this social medium has adverse
effects on their academic performance. Further analysis reveals that among
these 61%, majority of the respondents were male. In addition to adverse
effects of Facebook on academic performance, there was also an opinion that
use of Facebook makes it hard for them to perform the best on their career
performance. However the researcher feels that the later opinion is not very
clear and established and needs further investigation.

Analysis of these studies shows that the use of social networks, especially
the use of Facebook, is equally popular among university students. Researchers
report that most users agree that social media has a negative impact on
academic performance. This research This study was conducted to examine the
impact of social media on students' academic performance. Both work by
analyzing a random sample of respondents. through a self-administered
questionnaire and analyzed this data to make observations on the use of social
networking sites among them. The study also collects opinion of students about
the impacts of social medium on their academic performance.

Hamat, Embi, & Hassan (2012) studied the use of social networking
platforms among undergraduate and postgraduate students of Malaysian
institutes of higher education. This qualitative research collected data on 6358
student respondents through a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed
this data to make observations on the use of social networking sites among
them. The study also collects opinion of students about the impacts of social
medium on their academic performance.

A very important finding of this study is related to the use of social networks
for educational purposes. Most respondents agree that they use social media
as an informal learning tool, which helps them connect with friends and
colleagues to help them with their studies. However, the criticism is the same
when it comes to interactions with teachers.

This study also supports the most common finding of most well-structured
studies: the use of social networking sites does not have a negative effect on
students. Learning process. They also say it's a coincidence. Other factors such
as isolation from social networks, increased time on the Internet, conversations,
mental engagement, etc., may result in poor cognitive performance for using
the Internet, especially social networking sites.

Negussie and Ketema (2014) also investigated the effect of Facebook usage
when accessing it through different devices. Across multiple devices, using
Facebook on mobile devices and Students use Facebook worse than other tools.
This negative effect may be explained by the fact that using mobile phones for
social networking activities involves multitasking, and not all students have the
same multitasking ability. According to the study, students should be
encouraged to use social media for educational purposes, rather than banning
these platforms in educational settings.

Rouis, Limayem, & Salehi-Sangari (2011) investigate the effects of using

Facebook on academic performance of undergraduate students at Lula
University of Technology Sweden in relation to their personality traits. The
proposed research model tests how Facebook usage effects performance of
students with different personality traits. In addition the research tries to justify
the relationship among the three i.e. Facebook usage, personality traits and
academic performance. Their analysis of 239 students' data reveals very
significant results. This research establishes that using Facebook has strong
negative impact on academic performance of students with extrovert
personalities. However, factor of self-regulation among students greatly
reduces this negative impact as they have high level of effective self-control
while using social media platforms. Cognitive absorption, which defines of deep
involvement, is another personality factor taken into consideration while
undertaking this research.

The literature review above reveals that research on the role of social media
and social networking sites in academic performance of students is still
debatable. Most of the researchers have created more questions that finding
answer. These studies has a correlation in our study because they both proving
that using social media has a big impact in the learning of students.

2.2 Related Studies

A. Local Studies

In the study "The Effects of Social Networking Sites on Students' Academic

Performance in Lyceum of the Philippines—Laguna," Isaac M. Morallo (2014)
reported that the majority of the respondents, who are female and range in
age from 16 to 19, are from the College of Engineering and College of Arts and
Sciences and possess Facebook or other social media accounts. According to
the established impacts, students spend more time having fun and less time
studying when using SNSs. They primarily utilize SNSs for recreational or non-
academic objectives, as well as to chat with friends and classmates regarding
assignments and schoolwork. According to the First Semester School Year
2012–2013 student academic achievement in terms of GPA, the mean GPA falls
between 2.0 and 1.50, or 87 and 95 percent. According to students' perceptions
of SNSs' effects on their academic performance, using SNSs to communicate
online about schoolwork helps students achieve higher grades. Because
correlation coefficients indicate a negative relationship between SNS use and
academic performance, the results demonstrate that there is no significant
relationship between student academic performance and SNS usage. The
probability result shows an extremely low average correlation, indicating that
there is little to no relationship between SNSs and academic achievement,
according to the study.

Furthermore, Tamayo, Sacha, and Dela Cruz (2014)"" concluded that only
sixty-seven (67) students, or 48.6% of the respondents, had successfully
reached the satisfactory academic performance, while seventy-one (71) or
51.4% of the respondents had reached below satisfactory grade average. The
study was conducted at Centro Escolar University-Malolos, Philippines. that over
50% of the respondents' academic performance was subpar. Students' use of
social media instead of attending class has a significant impact on their
academic achievement. Utilizing social media has an impact on students'
academic performance, according to the study's findings. Pupils that took part
in the study did well academically, attended class frequently, and rarely
participated in class activities. The null hypothesis, according to which there is
no significant association between social media use and academic performance
among BSIT students at CEU-Malolos, is rejected, as evidenced by the
moderate correlation or relationship of +0.690, which is higher than the tabular
value of +1.000 at the 05 level of significance. The scatter graphic illustrates
how students' academic achievement is impacted by how frequently they use
social media. While students with worse marks are more likely to use social
media often, occasional users typically focus on their schoolwork and receive
good grades.

B. Foreign Studies
According to Gina Mowafy (2018), there are three different views on the
impact of social media on their academic performance. according to survey
analysis and focus group discussions; students are divided into three groups.
The first group believes that social media affects their academic performance
positively, the second group believes that social media affects their academic
performance negatively, and the third group believes that social media does
not affect their academic performance. Academic performance. In the focus
group discussions, each group reflected on how they see this effect and why
they think this effect occurs. For example, the positive effects group mentioned
that using social media as a communication tool to discuss course-related
content positively affects their academic performance, while the negative
effects group mentioned that their addiction to social media takes away study
time. negative effect on their academic performance and the ineffective group
mentioned that social media has nothing to do with their academic performance
and while they know how to manage their time there is nothing. affects their
academic performance. The discussion and results show that the relationship
between social media use and academic achievement depends on students use
of social media. This explains the negative correlation between the students
academic GPA and their time spent on social media, which can be addressed
to increase students’ awareness about the consequences of social media
effects.

Ching Nun Hoih (2017) discovered in her study that while some students
use social media as a resource for knowledge and as a means of
communication, many of them primarily use it for amusement and fun, which
does not really benefit them. While the former made meaningful use of their
time without it negatively impacting their studies, the latter frequently wasted
their time and it occasionally did. Because social media piques the interest of
young students and has the potential to be an engaging educational tool, this
research study has examined and revealed a few guidelines on how to make it
an effective tool for learning and enriching experiences as well as how to use
various apps as teaching-learning tools. The results of the study shown that
student's involvement in social media has both positive and negative outcome
based on how they used. The researcher wanted to clarify that technology does
not lessen the student's abilities to learn but rather it help them to learn
different abilities which they have never known before. Today, as we can see
development happens due to technology and social media so, making use of
social media for good and positive purposes will enable to the road of progress.

In the findings of Sandra Okyeadie Mensa (2016), it is concluded that social

media platforms has a significant impact on students' academic performance in
Malaysia tertiary institution. Nevertheless, among the six variables used in this
research, time appropriateness and health addiction has a stronger significant
influence on students' academic performance. This is because an individual's
ability to manage their time well determines whether they succeed or fail.
Students who struggle with time management can thus readily become victims
of the detrimental effects that social media platforms have on their users.
Similar to health addiction, students' obsession with social media causes them
to miss meals, which negatively affects their health. These students become
undernourished and may even become sick, which will directly affect the
students. Additionally, although not as significantly as the previously mentioned
variable, the type of usage and friendship connections have an effect on
students' academic performance. Lastly, there is little to no impact of time
duration and security/privacy issues on students' academic achievement.

According to Osharive Peter (2015), though Social Media have negative

effects on teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting students from their
academic work, taking most of their productive time, and such like, they also
have benefits and can be used appropriately. For example, students can use
Social Networking Sites (SNS) to stay in touch when a classmate who has been
absent needs to be updated on current academic information, or they can form
online communities to plan for a project or have group discussions about the
material.

Both this study's and its previous research's findings revealed some
interesting findings. Social media usage, the first independent variable affecting
students' academic performance, was inversely correlated with their results,
whereas the other independent variable was positively correlated with their
results. The study's findings recommend that educators provide a template for
their students to follow when maximizing social media's advantages, that school
administration implement guidelines and policies regarding students' use of
these platforms, and that the government set up sufficient controls to monitor
how both students and instructors use them.

2.3 Synthesis

The literatures that were reviewed from this chapter for the present
research were helpful in contributing new knowledge about the impacts of
social media in the learning of grade 10 students. Those helped the researchers
to know more the different social media used by the students. Furthermore,
those have contributed ideas and information to improve the present study.

The studies mentioned were focused in the over-all aspect of impacts of

social media in the learning of the students. Almost all of the related studies
mentioned conducted a descriptive survey to their respondents to know the
effects of social media to them.
It drew together several ideas gathered from different resources most
especially the information coming from the internet. These have been reviewed
and analyzed by the researchers, resulting to their successful study about the
impacts of social media in the learning of Grade 10 Students in Riverview High
School Mabini, Pangasinan.

2.4 Conceptual Framework

The study systematically conceptualized the “THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL

MEDIA IN LEARNING OF GRADE 10 STUDENTS IN RIVERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMIC YEAR 2023-2024” conducted at Riverview High School. The study
uses the case study design as a method through survey questionnaire to be
answered by our respondents, the Riverview High School Grade 10 students.
Chapter 3

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the research design, sampling and sampling

techniques, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical
technique. The detailed discussion on the research process will be conducted
to obtain the objectives of this research study.

3.1 Research Design

The present study followed the qualitative approach, the case study, as the
study is attempting to know the impacts of social media in the learning of Grade
10 students in Riverview High School. A case study is a detailed study of a
specific subject, such as a person, group, place, event, organization, or
phenomenon. Case studies are commonly used in social, educational, clinical,
and business research. Case studies are good for describing, comparing,
evaluating and understanding different aspects of a research problem. (Shona
McCombes, 2019)

3.2 Respondents of the Study

The target population of this study are fifteen (15) Grade 10 students in
Riverview High School, Inc. Mabini, Pangasinan Academic Year 2023-2024.
Since Grade 10 students use social media more frequently, the researchers
believed that they would be the suitable participants for this study.

3.3 Sampling Technique

The study has respondents directly from the chosen school and grade level.
This includes a total of 47 students. They were chosen since the target of the
research was to evaluate the impacts of social media in the learning of grade
10 students in Riverview High School.

All of these participants will be selected through convenience sampling. This

sampling method will be conducted where each member of a population has
the capability to become part of the sample. Convenience sampling is a non-
probability sampling method where units are selected for inclusion in the
sample because they are the easiest for the researcher to access. (Kassiani
Nikolopoulou, 2022)

3.4 Research Instrument

For this study, the survey-questionnaire instrument will be used to achieve

the main objective of the study. The same questionnaire given to the Grade 10
Students will provide evidences on the impacts of social media to an individual’s
learning. Survey-questionnaire uses open-ended questions to produce long-
form written/typed answers. These questions will aim to reveal opinions,
experiences, narratives or accounts. Often a useful precursor to interviews or
focus groups as they help identify initial themes or issues to then explore further
in the research.

Construction. The researcher was guided in creating the questionnaire by

ideas gathered from literature and studies. The concepts and theories from the
literature and studies are used to help formulate the questions that will be used
to assess the Impacts of Social Media in the Learning of Grade 10 Students in
Riverview High School Inc. Mabini, Pangasinan A.Y. 2023-2024.
Validation. The instrument will be presented to the experts in the field of
school operations for feedback and suggestions. All corrections were
incorporated into the questionnaire’s final draft.

3.5 Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will write a letter to Mrs. Kathleen Caberto, the School
Principal of Riverview High School, requesting permission to conduct the study.
The instrument used in this study is the survey questionnaire which is designed
to gather information about the Impacts of Social Media in the Learning of
Grade 10 Students in Riverview High School Academic Year 2023-2024.

The data that will be gathered from this research instrument will be
collected, organized, interpreted, and analyzed according to the participants’
answer.

3.6 Data Analysis Procedure

The researchers will employ thematic analysis of data collected. This is a

method for analyzing qualitative data that entails searching across a data set
to identify, analyze, and report repeated patterns (Braun and Clarke 2006). It
is a method for describing data, but it also involves interpretation in the
processes of selecting codes and constructing themes. In using this technique,
the researcher followed these steps: (1) Familiarization with the responses of
the participants: (2) coding the responses; (3) generating the themes that
appeared from the repeated responses coming from all the respondents; (4)
reviewing the themes; (5) defining and naming the themes; and (6) writing up
the themes.

3.7 Treatment of Data

The responses of each case will be examined commonalities and differences

of the answer from the subject’s case will become the basis for grouping and
coding of the case’s description.
