A system consist of a cylinder and a piston machine. The external normal load
applied to the piston is given by F=(-150+100x)kN.
x- distance from the closed end of the cylinder to the piston. How much work
is achieved when the piston move from x=2m to x=4 m.
Consider the system shown in the figure.
Initial conditions the gas are V1 = 0.1m3 and P1 = 200 kpa. The ambient
pressure is 100 kpa. The spring exerts a force which is proportional to the
displacement from its equilibrium position. The gas is heated until the volume
is doubled at which point p2 = 600 kpa. Determine the work done by the gas.
An engine cylinder has a piston of area 0.12m2 and contains gas at a pressure
1.5 Mpa. The gas expands according to a process which is represented by a
straight line on a pressure volume diagram. The final pressure is 0.15 Mpa.
Calculate the work done by the gas on the piston if the piston stroke is 0.30m.
A perfect gas is undergoing a process in which TαV 2/5. Calculate the work
done by the gas in going from state 1 in which the pressure is 100 bar and
volume is 4m3 to the state 2 in which volume is 2m3. Also calculate the final
pressure.
A simple magnetic substance is one involving only magnetic displacement
work; i.e., a change in magnetization of the substance in the presence of a
magnetic field. For such a substance undergoing a quasistatic process at
constant volume, the displacement work is given by
δW = - CoHdM
Where H = magnetic field intensity, M = magnetization and Co = a
proportionality constant. For a first approximation, assume that
magnetisation is proportional to the magnetic field divided by the
temperature of the magnetic substance. Determine the workdone in an
isothermal process when the magnetisation changes from M1 to M2.
What would be the work done if temperature varies from T1 to T2 and the
magnetic field intensity is constant.
A system of volume V contains a mass m of gas at pressure P and temperature
T. These properties are related by the equation.
α
P+ 2
(V −b)=mRT
V

Where a, b and R are constants. Obtain an expression for the displacement

workdone when the system undergoes an isothermal process from volume V1,
to a final volume V2. Calculate this work for the system which contains 10 kg
of this gas expanding from 1m3 to 10m3 at a constant temperature of 293 K.
Assume a = 15.7 x 104 Nm4, b = 1.07 × 10-2m3, and R = 0.278 kJ/kg - K.
A fluid contained in a horizontal cylinder with a frictionless leak proof piston
is continuously agitated by means of a stirrer passing through the cylinder
cover. The cylinder diameter is 0.4m. During the stirring process lasting 10
minutes, the piston slowly moves out a distance of 0.485m against the
atmospheric pressure of 101 Kpa. The net work done by the fluid during the
process is 2 kJ. The speed of the electric motor driving the stirrer is 840 rpm.
Determine the torque in the shaft and the power output of the motor.
Suggest most economical processwhen it is desired to compress one mole of
air (γ=1.4) from an initial state of 300K and 1 bar to a final state of 300K and
10 bar from the below processes
1. Isothermal Compression
2. cooling at constant pressure followed by heat at constant volume
3. Adiabhatic compression followed by cooling at constant pressure
4. heating at constant volume followed by cooling at constant pressure

R=8.314J/mol K
A ballon of flexible material is to be filled with an air from a strong bottle unit.
It has a volume of 0.7m3. The atmospheric pressure is 1.013 bar. Determine
the workdone by the system comprising the air initially in the bottle given
that the ballon is light and required no stretching.
