Catia 4

The document provides a step-by-step guide for creating projection and section views in drafting software, including how to define cutting profiles and generate detail views. It also explains how to create dimensions and use the Generate Dimensions feature to automate dimension generation from 3D constraints. Additionally, it introduces wireframe and surface design concepts for further geometrical creations.

DRAFTING

Step 13. Click the Projection View icon once again. Use the cursor to define the projection view
position, for example, the bottom view position, and click to generate the view. Once again, a
progress bar appears during the view creation process. The views result as shown here.

Here we are going to create a section view. Section views make drawings more readable by
replacing the hidden elements of parts, including holes, with filled areas.

Step 14. In the drawing window, click the Offset Section View icon from the Views toolbar. Select
the holes and points to define the cutting profile on the view.

Note that selecting a circular edge, a linear edge, an axis line or a center line (e.g., a hole)
makes the view callout associative by default to the corresponding 3-D feature. If you
select a circle, the callout will go through the circle center. If you select an edge, the
callout will be parallel to the selected edge. The procedure as follows:

Select a point along the center line of the part, and then go through the center of the first
circle. The views as shown below.

Choose the center of the second circle. The views are shown below.

Cross the center of the second circle(the high-light circle), select a point between two
circles, turn left and then go down until select the center of a right-hand circle. The
views as shown below.

After crossing the center of the circle, go down until last point.

Step 15. Double-click to end the cutting profile creation. A preview is displayed.
Step 16. Move the cursor and click the mouse to position the section view. The section view result is
shown below.

Step 17. The pattern is already made here. You can modify the pattern by just clicking it. Sometimes we
need to magnify some part of the view to show details. The function we need to use is called
Detail View .

Step 18. Click on the Detail View icon from the Views toolbar (Details sub-toolbar).

29

Step 19. Click where you want to position the callout center.

Step 20. Drag the cursor to define the callout radius, and click when you are satisfied.

Step 21. A dashed, blue circle appears at the position of the cursor. Move this circle to where you want to
position the detail view, and click to generate the view. The view result as shown below.

Step 22. The default scale is 2:1. If you want to change the scale, right click on the detail view, select
properties, then click on View tab, and change the scale to, for instance, 3:1.

Step 23. Different views are all finished. To modify the position of the views, move the cursor to the
frame, drag it, and drop it to a new position.

Step 24. Now we can close the part window since we are not going to use that anymore.

Step 25. To create the dimensions, we can click on the Dimensions icon .from the Dimensioning
toolbar.

Click a first element in the view, for example, a line or a circle. Then drag out the dimension and
left click your mouse.

Step 26. To create a chained dimension system, click on the Chained Dimensions icon from the
Dimensioning toolbar (Dimensions sub-toolbar).

The same way to use this function: click the icon, choose items, respectively, drag out
dimensions, and left click your mouse. The view displays as follow.

Step 27. The function of the Generate Dimensions icon in CATIA can help us to generate
dimensions in one shot from the constraints of a 3-D part. However, only the following
constraints can be generated: distance, length, angle, radius, and diameter. Here we are going
to learn another way which is called Generate Dimensions Step by Step. The procedure
presents as follows.
First, select the Front View on the sheet. The high-light view is shown below. Then click on the

Generate Dimensions Step by Step icon . Dimension Generation Filters dialog box appears
as shown below. In the dialog box, choose 3D constraints. This option will allow us to generate
dimensions from 3D constraints, for instance, an offset between two planes. Click on OK.

LAB 3. DRAFTING

The Step-by-Step Generation dialog box displays and will remain displayed until the end of the
dimension generation.

Check the Timeout option. The default timeout is set to two seconds. Enter the timeout value
you need, for example, three seconds (3 s). This is the time between the generations of two
adjacent dimensions.

Click the Next Dimension Generation switch button to start the dimension generation.
If you want to modify some dimensions during the process. Click on Pause in Dimension

Generation switch button , and then select the dimension to be modified and drag the
dimension to its new position. You can see the modification in the views below.

Click again the Next Dimension Generation switch button and continue the process. You can

stop at anytime the generation by clicking or accelerate the process by clicking .

After dimensions are generated, the Generation Dimensions Analysis dialog box showing the
dimensions and constraints generated for one part is automatically displayed, and then click on
OK. Furthermore, check what is missed and you can add it by yourself. The view result is shown
below.
