Open MS Teams and create a new group. Upload this project document so
you can collectively edit this document together + save all other project-
related files. This is an important “risk mitigation” action for collaborative
projects: if someone is ill, then you can access the files without asking
them.

Fill out the survey project document each week. This is an important
document for planning and keeping track of your project. You will use this
document when putting together your final poster assessment– so make
sure you keep good records!

WEEK 1
Creating a basic research plan
1) What is your research question relating to diversity on campus?

2) Is your question exploratory or confirmatory? If confirmatory,

what is your hypothesis?

3) Specify your target sample: Who do you need to collect data from
to answer your research question?

4) Specify your recruitment strategy: How are you going to recruit

your participants? What issues do you anticipate, if any, and how
will you mitigate against this?

5) What data to you need (age, gender, opinions on x y z) to answer

your research question? For each data, justify why you need this
information in relation to the research question. Important: You
may not collect any data which is not directly related to your
research question. Your survey must be fully anonymous, meaning
you may not collect any identifiable/personal information (name,
postcode, e-mail address).

Data you need Justification

Get the lecturer, PGTA or another group to check the data

requirements above before the end of the session.
Drafting your survey
Once you have a list of data you need, you can begin drafting your online
survey questions using the template MS Forms (link provided below).

1) Choose one person who will be the survey manager. The survey
manager will be responsible for overseeing creation of the survey.
(There will be other roles in the coming weeks, including analysis
lead(s) and communication lead(s).)

2) The survey manager should click this link:

gviecM. On the page, click “Duplicate It” button. This will now create
a draft survey in MS Forms, which includes a survey blub for your
group to edit.

3) The survey manager should then send the editor link to all members
of the team.
a. On the MS Forms survey page, click on the three dots at the
top right of the page
b. Click on “Collaborate or Duplicate”
c. Click on “Share the link to collaborate and view results,” and
copy the link under “Add collaborators.” Send this link to all
group members.
d. You can now collectively edit the survey! Instructions on how
to edit the survey can be found here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/forms

WEEK 1 HOMEWORK
Meet at some point before the next class to begin preparing a draft
survey. You should edit the blurb and begin adding questions to capture
the “data you need” listed above. Don’t worry if you are not sure /
experience issues – you just need a rough draft before the next session!

WEEK 2
Pre-planning your analysis
1. Refer to your research question and the data you are collecting.
Give a brief verbal description of how you might analyse the data
(e.g., compare the mean score of x between group a and group b;
test correlation between y and z, etc). You can change your mind –
but it’s good to know this in advance, to make sure you are
correcting the right data.

2. Once you have this set, get feedback from staff to check if you are
collecting the right data you need. If you updated your analysis plan,
list them below.

Improving Survey Quality

1. Carry out at least one of the below tasks to improve survey quality:
a. Peer Feedback (share your draft feedback with another group,
and get them to comment/give feedback on it)
b. Pilot Survey (send your survey to others, get them to fill it out,
and take a look at the data/responses to make sure the
responses are as expected)
c. Cognitive Interviewing (send your survey to others, and get
them to fill it out in front of you. Ask them to tell you what
they are thinking and why they have given certain answers)

Below, make notes on what processes you applied to improve your

survey quality (including what was done, number/type of people
who were involved, what issues were identified, and what changes
need to be made).
WEEK 2 HOMEWORK
Update your survey based on the quality improvement task above. Once
your survey is updated, collect your data according to your recruitment
strategy outlined in WEEK 1.

In preparation for next week, you can also the NATSAL Data Extract from
Moodle onto your computer (under Week 9 Block 4), as well as load the
ToolPack Add-On in Excel.

WEEK 3
Planning your analysis
In WEEK 2, you pre-planned your analysis to help you decide what data
you needed to collect. Based on what you learned in WEEK 3, make a list
of the exact analyses you need to conduct below, including both
descriptive and inferential statistics. Make sure you only plan analyses
which are relevant to your research question.

Conduct your analysis

Follow the plan above to conduct your analysis, led by the Analysis
Lead(s). The results should be uploaded to the MS Teams Group, so
everyone has access to them. Keep a list of any problems you encounter
below, as well as any changes you must make to the analysis plan.

WEEK 3 Homework
Finish off the planned analyses. Analysis Lead(s) should not be left to do
this alone – make sure you meet all together to carry out and understand
the analyses. This is particularly important for Communication Lead(s)
who will lead on communicating the results in WEEK 4 (thus require a
good understanding of the analyses).

If you encounter any issues, don’t worry – bring this to WEEK 4 for in-
person support.
WEEK 4
Communicating your results
Brainstorm how to communicate your results, led by the Communication
Lead(s). You should discuss the following:

 What statistics should you present, and how?

 How should you communicate your results?
 What do the results mean overall (how should you interpret them)?
You may have some clues from open-text data, if your survey
included them (Note: if you use your open-text data to help interpret
your results, you must explain this when writing up your project.)
 What are the limitations of the project/what went wrong, and how
does that impact the interpretation of the results? You may have
some clues from open-text data, if your survey included them (Note:
if you use your open-text data to help interpret your results, you
must explain this when writing up your project.)

Week 4 Homework
This week, you should individually prepare your poster for assessment.
You can base your poster on your Block 3 or Block 4 poster. You should
work on this independently.

For Block 4, refer to this Project Plan document as well as your group
project results and all your learnings.
