Production systems provide such structures.
Production systems consist of:
1. A set of rules, each consisting of a left side (a pattern) that determines the applicability of the rule and a
right side that describes the operation to be performed if the rule is applied.
2.One or more knowledge/databases that contain whatever information is appropriate for the particular task.
Some parts of the database may be permanent, while other parts of it may pertain only to the solution of the
current problem.
The information in these databases may be structured in any appropriate way.
3.A control strategy that specifies the order in which the rules will be compared to the database and a way of
resolving the conflict that arise when several rules match at once.
4. A rule applier.
It encompasses a great many systems, including:
1.Basic production system languages, such as OPS5 (Brownstone et al 1985) and ACT* [Anderson 1983].
2.More complex, often hybrid systems called expert system shells, which provide complete (relatively
speaking) environments for the construction of knowledge based expert systems.
3.General problem-solving architectures like SOAR (Laird et al.., of 1987], a system based on a specific set

would usually require a human expert thus preserving a human expert’s knowledge in its knowledge base.
They can advise users as well as provide explanations to them about how they reached a particular
conclusion or advice. Knowledge Engineering is the term used to define the process of building an Expert
System and its practitioners are called Knowledge Engineers. The primary role of a knowledge engineer is
to make sure that the computer possesses all the knowledge required to solve a problem. The knowledge
engineer must choose one or more forms in which to represent the required knowledge as a symbolic pattern
in the memory of the computer.
Example : There are many examples of an expert system. Some of them are given below –
 MYCIN–
One of the earliest expert systems based on backward chaining. It can identify various bacteria that
can cause severe infections and can also recommend drugs based on the person’s weight.
 DENDRAL–
It was an artificial intelligence-based expert system used for chemical analysis. It used a substance’s
spectrographic data to predict its molecular structure.
 R1/XCON–
It could select specific software to generate a computer system wished by the user.
 PXDES–
It could easily determine the type and the degree of lung cancer in a patient based on the data.
 CaDet–
It is a clinical support system that could identify cancer in its early stages in patients.
 DXplain–
It was also a clinical support system that could suggest a variety of diseases based on the findings of
the doctor

 A human expert can change, but an expert system can last forever.
 It facilitates the distribution of human expertise.
 The expert system might incorporate knowledge from multiple human experts, which would increase
the effectiveness of the answers.
 It lowers the expense of seeking advice from a specialist in various fields, including medical
diagnosis.
 Instead of using standard procedural code, expert systems can handle complex issues by inferring
new facts from known facts of knowledge, which are typically represented as if-then rules.
The role of expert systems in problem-solving includes:
Knowledge Representation: Expert systems encapsulate human expertise in a formal and structured
manner. The knowledge base stores information, rules, and heuristics that the system uses for decision-
making.
Problem Diagnosis: Expert systems excel in diagnosing complex problems by applying their knowledge to
analyse symptoms, identify patterns, and determine potential causes. They can guide users through a step-
by-step process to identify issues and recommend solutions.
Decision Support: Expert systems provide decision support by offering recommendations and solutions

and timely decision-making is crucial.

set operations. Zadeh [1965] formulated the fuzzy set theory in the terms of standard operations:

Going back to our cat example, we could represent a cat simply as a generic "cat," or we could get very
detailed and represent it as a specific breed, with its unique characteristics. The level of granularity we
choose depends on what the AI system needs to do. If it is trying to distinguish between different breeds of
cats, then a more detailed representation is necessary. However, if it is just identifying whether something is
a cat or not, a more general representation might be sufficient.
4. Representing Sets of Objects: Sometimes, we do not just want to represent individual things; we want to
represent groups or sets of things. For example, if we are talking about a family of cats, we need a way to
represent multiple cats together. This involves understanding how to organize and manage collections of

 Hill Climbing is an AI optimization algorithm that starts with an initial solution and makes
incremental changes to improve it based on a heuristic function. It continues this process until
reaching a local maximum. Variations include steepest ascent, which evaluates all possible moves,
and first-choice, which randomly selects and accepts moves leading to improvement. Simulated
annealing allows occasional acceptance of worse moves. While useful in optimization problems, Hill
Climbing has limitations like getting stuck in local maxima. It's often combined with other
techniques, such as genetic algorithms, to enhance results.

 Advantages of Hill Climbing algorithm:


Hill Climbing is a simple and intuitive algorithm that is easy to understand and implement.
It can be used in a wide variety of optimization problems, including those with a large search space and
complex constraints.
Hill Climbing is often very efficient in finding local optima, making it a good choice for problems where a
good solution is needed quickly.
The algorithm can be easily modified and extended to include additional heuristics or constraints.

 Disadvantages of Hill Climbing algorithm:

Hill Climbing can get stuck in local optima, meaning that it may not find the global optimum of the
problem.
The algorithm is sensitive to the choice of initial solution, and a poor initial solution may result in a poor
final solution.
Hill Climbing does not explore the search space very thoroughly, which can limit its ability to find better
solutions.
It may be less effective than other optimization algorithms, such as genetic algorithms or simulated
annealing, for certain types of problems.

1. Variant of generating and test algorithm:


It is a variant of generating and testing algorithms.
The generate and test algorithm is as follows:
Generate possible solutions.
Test to see if this is the expected solution.
If the solution has been found quit else go to step 1.
Hence, we call Hill climbing a variant of generating and test algorithm as it takes the feedback from the
test procedure. Then this feedback is utilized by the generator in deciding the next move in the search
space.

2. Uses the Greedy Approach: -

At any point in state space, the search moves in that direction only which optimizes the cost of function
with the hope of finding the optimal solution at the end.

Types of Hill Climbing

1. Simple Hill climbing:

It examines the neighboring nodes one by one and selects the first neighboring node which optimizes the
current cost as the next node.
Algorithm for Simple Hill climbing:
Evaluate the initial state. If it is a goal state then stop and return success. Otherwise, make the initial state
as the current state.
Loop until the solution state is found or there are no new operators present which can be applied to the
current state.
Select a state that has not been yet applied to the current state and apply it to produce a new state.
Perform these to evaluate the new state.
If the current state is a goal state, then stop and return success.
If it is better than the current state, then make it the current state and proceed further.
If it is not better than the current state, then continue in the loop until a solution is found.
Exit from the function.

2. Steepest-Ascent Hill climbing:


It first examines all the neighboring nodes and then selects the node closest to the solution state as of the
next node.
Algorithm for Steepest Ascent Hill climbing:

Evaluate the initial state. If it is a goal state then stop and return success. Otherwise, make the initial state
as the current state.
Repeat these steps until a solution is found or the current state does not change
Select a state that has not been yet applied to the current state.
Initialize a new ‘best state’ equal to the current state and apply it to produce a new state.
Perform these to evaluate the new state
If the current state is a goal state, then stop and return success.
If it is better than the best state, then make it the best state else continue the loop with another new state.
Make the best state as the current state and go to Step 2 of the second point.
Exit from the function.

3. Stochastic hill climbing:

It does not examine all the neighboring nodes before deciding which node to select. It just selects a
neighboring node at random and decides (based on the amount of improvement in that neighbor) whether
to move to that neighbor or to examine another.
Evaluate the initial state. If it is a goal state then stop and return success. Otherwise, make the initial state
the current state.
Repeat these steps until a solution is found or the current state does not change.
Select a state that has not been yet applied to the current state.
Apply the successor function to the current state and generate all the neighbor states.
Among the generated neighbor states which are better than the current state choose a state randomly (or
based on some probability function).
If the chosen state is the goal state, then return success, else make it the current state and repeat step 2 of
the second point.
Exit from the function.

the value of our objective function (the function which we wish to maximize).
X-axis: denotes the state space i.e. states or configuration our algorithm may reach.
Y-axis: denotes the values of objective function corresponding to a particular state.
The best solution will be a state space where the objective function has a maximum value (global
maximum).

Different regions in the State Space Diagram:


Local maximum: It is a state which is better than its neighboring state however there exists a state which
is better than it (global maximum). This state is better because here the value of the objective function is
higher than its neighbors.

Global maximum: It is the best possible state in the state space diagram. This is because, at this stage, the
objective function has the highest value.
Plateau/flat local maximum: It is a flat region of state space where neighboring states have the same
value.
Ridge: It is a region that is higher than its neighbors but itself has a slope. It is a special kind of local
maximum.
Current state: The region of the state space diagram where we are currently present during the search.
Shoulder: It is a plateau that has an uphill edge.
