LESSON: Compose clear and coherent sentences using

appropriate grammatical structures - conjunctions
In grammar, conjunctions are words used to connect clauses or
sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause.

Different kinds of conjunctions join different kinds of grammatical

structures.

The following are the kinds of conjunctions:

Coordinate Conjunctions are words that join two elements of equal

grammatical rank and syntactic importance. They can join two verbs, two
phrases, or two independent clauses. The seven coordinate conjunctions are
for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so (FANBOYS).

Words:

Pollution and waste

DVD player, television, or phone
Simple but elegant
Phrases:

Quite expensive yet long lasting

The washing machine nor the air conditioner
In the bathroom or in the swimming pool
Sentences:

Coal may be cheap, but the environmental costs are high.

Avoid wasting clean water, for it might become a luxury in the future.

Here are the guidelines for using a coordinate conjunction:

1. A comma is placed before the coordinate conjunction when the

conjunction connects two independent clauses. A clause consists of a
subject and a verb. There are two kinds of clauses:
a. Independent (main) – expresses a complete thought and it can stand
alone.
Example:
Mom uses cloth towels.
S V

3
b. Dependent Clause – has incomplete thought and cannot stand alone as
a sentence.
Example:
that Mom uses
S V
See how two independent clauses are combined with a coordinate
conjunction.

Mom uses cloth towels, so she washes them often.

Disposable utensils are handy, yet we do avoid using them.

2. A comma is not used when using a coordinate conjunction to connect two

objects. However, if more than two objects are connected, a comma is
placed before the coordinating conjunction.
Examples:
I use soap or detergent for laundry.
We must avoid disposable cups, plates, or cutlery.

3. Use:
• for to show reason or purpose;
We buy purified water, for we don’t drink tap water.
Be kind always for kindness goes back to you.
• and to add similar items or ideas;
I love fruit juice and shake.
Father has a big heart and Mother has a huge one.
• nor to connect non-contrasting negative ideas;
Neither the girls nor the boys drink soda.
Kyle does not yell when angry, nor does he growl.
• but to join contrasting ideas or exceptions
The manager is strict but friendly.
Gentleness promotes goodwill but anger does not.
• or to join alternative ideas or items;
The lightning or the thunder makes Avah scared.
When stressed, I read a book or I watch a video.
• yet to show a contrast; and
Manuel is tired, yet he is still planting vegetables in the backyard.
I buy a lot of books, yet I don’t read them all.
• so to show a result or consequence.
Boil the tap water, so it will be safer to drink.
Report to work early, so others will follow.

4
Remember:

Coordinate conjunctions connect words, phrases, and independent clauses.

Each of the seven coordinate conjunctions has its own use.

Subordinate conjunctions are words or phrases that are used to

connect a dependent clause to the main clause or independent clause.

A species is lost forever when it goes extinct.

main clause subordinate dependent clause

conjunction
Below is a list of common subordinate conjunctions.
after in order that though
although in the event that until
as just in case when
as soon as now that whenever
because once where
before only if whereas
by the time provided that wherever
even if rather than whether
even though since whether or not
every time so that while
if than why
in case that

The subordinate conjunctions have the following uses:

1. To express reason: as, because, in order that, since, so that

• The streets are flooded because it rained hard two hours ago.
• Open the windows so that you can have fresh air.
2. To show concession and comparison: although, as, even, though, just as,
though, whereas, while
• Open the windows though it is raining.
• Keep the windows open while the sun is out.
3. To express condition: even if, if, in case, provided that, unless
• Keep the windows open even if it rains.
• Keep the windows open provided that the rain doesn’t enter the room.
4. To denote time: after, as soon as, before, once, till, until, when, whenever,
while
• Keep the windows open as long as the sun shines.
• Close the windows before the night creeps in.

5. To denote place: where, wherever

5
• I sit where there is fresh air.
• I will go wherever the weather is fine.

Remember:

Subordinate conjunctions provide necessary transition between two ideas in

a sentence. This transition signals time, place, condition, reason, comparison,
or cause-effect relationship.
