Unlike parallels of latitude, all meridians are of equal length. Thus, it was difficult to number the meridians.
Hence, all countries decided that the count should begin from the meridian which passed through Greenwich,
where the British Royal Observatory is located. This meridian is called the Prime Meridian. Its value is 0°
longitude and from it we count 180° eastward as well as 180° westward. The Prime Meridian and 180°
meridian divide the earth into two equal halves, the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere.
Therefore, the longitude of a place is followed by the letter E for the east and W for the west. It is, however,
interesting to note that 180° East and 180° West meridians are on the same line

a. Why is the Prime Meridian important for measuring time? [1]


Ans: The Prime Meridian is a value of 00 longitude. It is considered the central longitude on the globe,
hence all countries decided to use the time set on the Prime Meridian.
b. State an interesting fact about the meridians. [1]
Ans: The meridians are of equal length. They meet at the north and the south poles.
c. ‘Prime Meridian and the International Date Line are the same.’ Defend or refute the statement with a
valid reason. [1]
Ans: The Prime Meridian helps to establish the International Date Line. Earth's longitudes measures
360°, so the halfway point from the prime meridian is the 180° longitude line. The meridian at 180°
longitude is commonly known as the International Date Line. The 180° longitude line is the same line
of longitude.

Hunter-gatherers moved from place to place, may be because, if they stayed at one place for a long time,
they would have eaten up all the available plant and animal resources. They either moved as animals
move in search of smaller prey or in search of deer and wild cattle that moved in search of grass. People
may also have moved from season to season as plants and trees bear fruit in different seasons. The early
man, may also have moved as they need water to survive and as they settled along the river banks, and
the rivers are perennial or some are seasonal.

Ans: The early man did not settle in one particular place for a long time because they
would have eaten the available plants and animal resources and fell short of food.
They moved season wise as plants and trees bear fruit in different seasons.
The rivers are either perennial or seasonal, so they moved in search of water.
b. Why did the early man settle along the river bank? [1]
Ans: The early man settled along the river banks as water was easily available, and the geographical
conditions were suitable for growing crops.

27. Read the paragraph given below and answer the questions that follow:

India became a nation in 1947, our leaders too were concerned about the different kinds of inequalities that
existed. Those who wrote the Constitution of India, a document that laid out the rules by which the nation
would function, were aware of the ways in which discrimination had been practised in our society and how
people had struggled against this. The leaders set out a vision and goals in the Constitution to ensure that all
the people of India were considered equal. This equality of all persons is seen as a key value that unites us all
as Indians. Everyone has equal rights and opportunities. Untouchability is seen as a crime and has been
legally abolished by law. People are free to choose the kind of work they wish to do. Government jobs are
open to all people. In addition, the Constitution also placed responsibility on the government to take specific
steps to realise this right to equality for poor and other such marginal communities.

Ans: India is a country of diversity. So it was decided that there will be equality in the practice of religion of
choice. There won’t be any discrimination on the basis of religion.

b. State the vision and goal set by the leaders while framing the constitution? [2]
The leaders set out a vision and goals in the Constitution to ensure that all the people of India were
considered equal.
 Equality of all persons is seen as a key value.
 Everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
 Untouchability is seen as a crime and has been legally abolished by law.
People are free to choose the kind of work they wish to do.

28. What was unusual about the houses found in Burzahom, Kashmir? [3]
Ans: Houses found in Burzahom, Kashmir:
 People built pit houses.

In what way did the advent of agriculture change the life of the early man?
Ans: Agriculture changed the life of the early man:
 Agriculture began about 12000 years ago.
 Before agriculture, people lived by hunting wild animals and gathering wild plants. When supplies ran
out, these hunter-gatherers moved on.
 Agriculture meant that people did not need to travel to find food. Instead, they began to live in settled
communities, and grew crops or raised animals on nearby land.
 They built stronger, more permanent homes and surrounded their settlements with walls to protect
themselves.

29. What happens when people act upon their prejudices? [3]
Ans: Prejudices:
 It is judging people negatively. When people act on their prejudices the get a feeling that “I am the

 The self-esteem of the individual who is the victim suffers and they stop trying to improve themselves.
