apply them in a practical project management context.

2. Scenario
You have been selected as a member of the project management team for a 5-storey hospital building
construction project. The project involves designing and constructing a facility that aligns with the latest
industry standards and requirements. The project has a significant scope, involves multiple stakeholders, and is
subject to various constraints and risks and is required to be completed within a 12-month period starting from
1st October 2023.

3. Assignment Tasks

A. Explain what a project is and describe main constraints of a project. List five different types of projects
and explain the type of the project described in the scenario. (P1, M1)

B. Develop a project charter that outlines the project's objectives, stakeholders, and high-level scope. (P7
& P8, M1, D2)

C. Define the project scope by limiting it to about 15 main tasks and prepare the Work Breakdown
Structure (WBS). (P7 & P8)

D. Create the project schedule in a Gantt chart (in Excel) by considering the WBS created above. Assume
reasonable durations for each task in the WBS and appropriate predecessors and relationships. (You
may consider only the Finish – Start (FS) relationship) (P7 & P8)

E. Create the Network Diagram for the same tasks as defined in the item 2 and derive the Critical Path
and define Critical Activities. (P7 & P8)

F. Assume that the project budget is USD 3.0 million and the actual expenses after 5 months as; Labour –
USD 525,000, Material – USD350,000, Machinery – USD225,000, other expenses – USD140,000.
The planned and actual progress after 5 months are 42% and 35% respectively.

Carry out the Earned Value analysis for the project at the end of 5th month and derive the followings;
E.1. Cost variance
E.2. Schedule variance
E.3. Cost Performance Index
E.4. Schedule Performance Index
E.5. Give your opinion on the performance of the project at the end of 5 months. (P7 & P8)

G. Discuss the importance of implementing a Quality Management system within the project. Define the
roles and responsibilities of; (P7 & P8, D2)
F.1. The Project Manager

6

H. Identify potential risks to the project's success (minimum 5), assess their impact and probability, and
create a risk management plan. (P7 & P8, D2)

I. Identify and prepare a list of Stakeholders (minimum 5) for the project. Define a RACI Matrix for
those identified Stakeholders for the project activities; Scope definition, project design, project
implementation, Risk Management, Final Acceptance. (P3 & P4, M2)

J. Write a brief note (min 250 words) about the Project Manager to be appointed for this project showing
the required skills he must possess and his key roles. (P5 & P6)

K. Explain how the Project Manager’s professional qualifications in Project Management contribute for
the success of a complex project. (P2, M1, M3, D1)
