The solutions of the quadratic equation in the standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0 with

△ = b − 4ac is called discriminant(delta).
If △ = b2 − 4ac > 0 , then f has two distinct real zeros, and the graph of f intersects
the x − axis twice.
If △ = b2 − 4ac = 0, then f has one real zero (double root), and the graph of f
intersects the x − axis once (i.e. it is tangent to the x − axis).
If △ = b2 − 4ac < 0, then f has two imaginary zeros (not real), and the graph of f
does not intersect the x − axis.

Each parabola is symmetric about a vertical line called its axis of symmetry.
The axis of symmetry passes through a point on the parabola called the vertex
of the parabola, as shown in the Figures above.If the leading coefficient, a, of the
quadratic function is positive, then the parabola opens upward (concave up) and the
y-coordinate of the vertex will be a minimum value for the function. If the leading
coefficient is negative, then the parabola opens downward (concave down) and the
y-coordinate of the vertex will be a maximum value for the function.

INTERCEPT(ROOT) FORM
y = a(x − p)(x − q), given roots(x-intercepts) p and q.
EXAMPLE: The graph of a quadratic function intersects the x–axis at the points
(−6, 0) and (−2, 0) and also passes through the point (2, 16).

EXAMPLE: Find the standard form of the quadratic function whose graph has
vertex (–3, 4) and passes through the point (–4, –7).
EXAMPLE:Find the equation of the axis of symmetry and the coordinates of the
vertex of the graph of f (x) = x2 − 8x + 18 by rewriting the function in the form of
f (x) = a(x − h)2 + k.

A quadratic expression which always takes positive values is called positive definite,
while one which always takes negative values is called negative definite
EXAMPLE: Find the range of values of m such that for all x, m(x + 1) ≤ x2 .
EXAMPLE: Find the range of values of k such that 3x2 − 12x + k > 0 for all real
values of x.
