EET6L Experiment 3 1/6

I. Aims/Objectives

1. Determining the diagram of the process characteristics.

II. Introduction

In this experiment, you will have the opportunity to measure the dynamic response of the process
and test it in real time, by using the fill and drain valves

As you already performed the sensor calibration in the previous experiment, you will not need to
repeat the calibration procedure. In this standard calibration, we have 1 V for each 1 cm of the level.

III. Apparatus and Materials Required

No. Quantity Component

1 1 DeLorenzo 2314 Process Control Trainer
2 1 DC Voltage Source
4 1 Level Transducer
5 1 Pump Driver
6 1 DC Voltmeter

IV. Experimental Set-up

Below is the setup of the DL 2314 process control trainer.

VI Procedure

Step-by-Step Connection Procedure

1. Connect Level Transducer (Sensor Input 2) to Chassis:

 Connect the output of Sensor Input 2 (LVDT-) to the 0-0 Chassis.
2. Connect Level Transducer (Sensor Input 1) to Chassis:
 Connect the output of Sensor Input 1 (LVDT+) to the 0-0 Chassis.
3. Connect Level Transducer Output to DC Voltmeter:
 Connect the Level Transducer Output to the DC Voltmeter (Voltmeter DC 1+) on the positive
terminal.

4. Connect DC Voltmeter Ground:

EET6L Experiment 3 3/6

 Connect the ground terminal of the DC Voltmeter (Voltmeter DC 1-) to the 0-0 Chassis.
5. Connect Pump Driver Input to DC Voltage Source:
 Connect the input of the Pump Driver to the positive terminal (V+) of the DC Voltage Source
(Channel 1).
6. Connect Pump Driver to Chassis Ground:
 Connect the negative terminal (V-) of the Pump Driver to the 0-0 Chassis.
7. Connect Pump Driver to Pump:
 Connect the Pump Driver's positive terminal (Pump +) to the 0-0 Chassis.
 Connect the Pump Driver's negative terminal (Pump -) to the 0-0 Chassis.

Process Panel Initial Setup

Set the valve to the following initial positions:

Relief Valve Fully closed (in a horizontal position)

Needle Valve Fully closed (turn the knob clockwise)
Drain Valve Fully closed (in a horizontal position)
Air Valve Open

Level of the water in the PROCESS TANK: O cm. (empty tank).

NOTE: The positioning of the valves can be seen on the DL 2314 board.

NOTE: You will notice that we have an ON/OFF switch in DC voltage sources. For the source to send the
present voltage signal, we have to activate the switch up.

NOTE:

Tank diameter = 17.5 cm

Tank volume = π x r2 (area of the base) × the height
1 cm3 = 1 + 1000 liter
1 cm3/sec = 0.06 liters/min

Experiment procedure and measurements

Prepare the MEASUREMENTS TABLE button to fill it with your results.

1) Adjust the voltage on SETPOINT 1 at 8V. Start the pump by switching up the key.

2) Wait until the level of the water in the tank reaches 5 cm. of the tank scale.

3) Write down the values in the measurement table.

EET6L Experiment 3 4/6

4) Gradually, turn clockwise the knob of the DRAIN VALVE and/or counterclockwise the knob
NEEDLCE VALVE to the maintain the level of the water in the tank at 5 cm.

5) Wait until the level is stabilized. If this will not happen adjust again the knob DRAIN VALVE
and/or the knob NEEDLE VALVE to maintain the level at a constant value of 5 cm.

6) Temporarily, adjust the voltage on SETPOINT1 back to 0 V and switch down the key.

7) Bring back the water level to 0 cm. through the RELIEF VALVE, without modifying the position of
the DRAIN VALVE and NEEDLE VALVE. After that, close the RELIEF VALVE.

8) Adjust the voltage on the SETPOINT1 at 8 V and switch up the key and start at the same time the
chronometer.

9) Measure the level at 20 seconds interval and write down the values in the measurement table.

10) Repeat the procedure to fill all the values in the measurement table.
