Question 1 (9 marks)

Ada investigated the relationship between the volume of a beaker containing a

burning candle and the time for which it continued to burn.

She set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram below.

Ada lit the candle and placed a 100 cm3 beaker over it. She used a stopclock to
find out how long the candle burned. She then repeated the experiment with
beakers of volumes 500 cm3 and 1 000 cm3.

The burning times for the candles are shown on the stopclocks in the diagrams
below.

Record the times in the table.

beaker volume / cm3 time /s

Question 3 (5 marks)

Angelique’s pet mouse has baby mice.

Pierre says that grouping together helps the baby mice to keep warm.

Angelique suggests that they plan an investigation to test Pierre’s idea.

They use eight test-tubes filled with hot water to represent eight baby mice.
Angelique labels one tube A and stands it on its own.
She labels another tube B and places it in the middle of six other tubes all
labelled C.

Pierre and Angelique obtain these results.

Question 4 (3 marks)

Tolu wants to determine if the height of the ramp affects how far his toy car will
move along a table. He designs an experiment and carries it out. He uses a pile
of books and a chopping board to make the ramp.

The following is the table of his results.

height of distance travelled / cm

ramp / cm trial 1 trial 2 trial 3 average
5 20 22 21 21
10 40 42 38 40
15 60 58 62 60

20 82 83 78 81

25 100 98 99 99

(a) Plot the results of the average distance against the height of the ramp on
the grid on the next page. [2]

(b) Draw the line of best fit. [1]
