1. The signal y(t) is generated from x(t) using a series of transformations as shown in
Figure 1.

Figure 1: Sequence of transformations in Problem 1.

(a) What is the mathematical expression that relates the output y(t) of the overall
system to its input signal x(t)?
[10 points]
(b) We wish to implement the same system using a series of three transformations
or less from scaling along the time axis, reflection about the y axis and time
shifting. How will you do this?
[10 points]
(c) Sketch y(t) when the input signal x(t) is given by

x(t) = δ(t − 3) + δ(2t + 4)

Provide enough information in the figure to demonstrate your knowledge of the

concepts involved. The heights of the impulses in the sketch should correspond
to their areas.
[15 points]
2. Draw a block diagram realization of the system with input-output relationship

d2 d d2 d
3 2
y(t) + 2 y(t) + 6y(t) = 2
x(t) + 2 x(t)
dt dt dt dt
using integrators, multipliers and adders. In particular, do not use differentiators for
your realization. You should do this problem without using Laplace transform.
[20 points]
3. Consider a discrete-time system with input x[n] and output y[n], with the following
input-output relationship:

y[n] = cos(0.1πn) {x[n] + x[n − 2]}

Determine, from basic principles, if this system is linear and/or time invariant.
[20 points]
4. A discrete-time linear time-invariant system has unit impulse response function given
by (
2 ; |n| ≤ 3
h[n] =
0 ; otherwise

(a) Find the output of the system when its input is given by
(
−1 ; 5 ≤ n ≤ 9
x[n] =
0 ; otherwise

[20 points]
(b) A system is said to be causal if its output at any time n depends only on its
imput at times n and before. Is the system of this problem a causal system?
[5 points]
