Calculating Area of a Circle

Daily Lesson Plan

School: Grade Level 5

Teacher: Learning Area: Mathematics

Teaching Quarter: 4
Date/s and
Time:

I. Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to...
● calculate the area of a given circle.

II. Content MELC CODE: M5ME-IVa-74

Lesson Title: Calculating the Area of a Circle

III. Learning Digital resources:

Resources ● Laptop, computer, TV, or projector
● PowerPoint or Google Slides
● DepEd K-12 Math Curriculum Guide
● Online Timer

Non-digital:
● Printed worksheets
● Pens or pencils for note-taking
● Notebooks for note-taking

IV. Procedure Teaching Strategy: Retrieval Practice

Retrieval practice is a strategy where students actively recall
information from memory. For example, after learning that the area
of a circle is calculated by the formula "Area = πr²," students can be
asked to write down the formula from memory or explain the steps
without looking at their notes. To connect this with local products and
crafts used for home decor, students measure or estimate the
dimensions of circular items—like a decorative round craft or a piece
of local art—and then calculate the area. This approach not only
reinforces their understanding of the formula but also shows them
how math is used in everyday life.
Calculating Area of a Circle

A. Reviewing To review the concepts related to circle and circumference, students

previous will play:
lesson or
presenting a Small Circle, Big Circle
new lesson Students make a small circle if their answer is below and big circle if
their answer is the option above.

Refer to the circle below. Point O is the center of the circle.

● Its diameter is AC.

○ A diameter is a straight line that goes from one side of a
circle to the other, passing through the center.
● OE represents a radius.
○ A radius is a line from the center of a circle to its edge.
● The length of the diameter is twice the radius.
○ A diameter is twice the length of its radius.
● The formula for finding the circumference using the diameter is
πd.
○ The formula to find the circumference is πd or 2πr.

Discussion Questions
● Do you remember how to find the area of a rectangle?
● What is the area of the shaded rectangle? Share your
strategy.
○ Area is the total space inside a flat shape or figure.
○ To measure it, we can count the square units covered
by a shape or figure.
● How many square units does this rectangle take up?
○ It takes up 15 square units of space.
● Who remembers the formula for the area of a rectangle?
○ We can find the area by using a formula.
○ Area = length × width
Calculating Area of a Circle

○ Length = 5 units
○ Width = 3 units
○ Area = 5 units × 3 units = 15 square units
○ The area of the shaded rectangle is 15 square units.
● What is the difference between circumference and area of a
circle?
○ Area is the total space inside a flat shape or figure.
○ Circumference is the distance around the circle, like
the border or edge you would walk along.

B. Establishing a Let students know that today they will learn how to calculate area of
purpose for circles by exploring some Filipino arts and crafts.
the lesson

C. Presenting Introduce Liza to the students

examples / Let’s meet Liza who likes to make Filipino arts and crafts.
instances of She likes to find out how many square-cut Capiz shells are needed to
the new
cover this circular wood. Capiz shells are thin, shiny shells from a type
lesson
of oyster. They are used to make pretty windows and decorations.
Can we find out how many square Capiz Liza needs? What have you
learned in the past that will help you solve this?

Key points
● Maybe we can use what we know about the area of a
rectangle to find the area of this circle.
Calculating Area of a Circle

● Who says the area of the circle is 16 square units? Who says it's
not?
○ No, to estimate the area of the circle, we also need to
count the incomplete squares.
● No, to estimate the area of the circle, we also need to count
the incomplete squares.

1
● Then, let’s count these parts as .
2

○ Putting together these fractions, we’ll get 4 whole units.
● Add all the measurements we got.

○ 16 + 8 + 4 = 28 square units.
● Because these parts are not yet counted.
Calculating Area of a Circle

● Therefore, the area of this circle is about 28 square units.

Discussion Questions
● Do you know a way to find the exact area?
○ We can use a formula to find the area of a circle
● Do you think the way we calculate the area of a circle is
similar to that of the area of a rectangle? How might they be
connected?
○ Let students watch the video
● What did the video tell us about how to calculate the area of
a circle?
○ From the video, we learned that:
■ The formula to find the area of a circle is similar
to the formula to find the area of a rectangle.
■ Area of Circle = π × r × r

Key points
● Use the formula to find the area of the circle
○ Area = π × r × r
● Find the radius by dividing the diameter by 2
○ 6÷2=3
● Substitute the formula by the given number. Use 3.14 as the
value of pi
○ 3.14 × 3 × 3
● Multiply 3.14 by 3
○ 9.42 × 3
● Then, multiply the answer by 3.
○ 9.42 × 3 = 28.26
● The area of the circle is 28.26
● Is our estimate correct?
Calculating Area of a Circle

○ ✓28.26 is close to 28.

● Liza will need around 28 square-cut Capiz to cover the circular
wood.

D. Discussing Continue the story of Liza

new Liza wants to make use of bilao as decor. To make sure it will fit the
concepts spot where she will hang them, she wants to find out the area of the
and bilao. The radius of the bilao is 21 cm.
practicing
new skills #1 22
Lead the students to understand that they can also use pi as the
7
value of pi.

Key Points:
● Use the formula to find the area of the circle
○ Area = π × r × r
22
● Substitute the formula by the given number. Use as the
7
value of pi
22
○ × 21 × 21
7
● Use cancellation method
○ 22 × 3 × 21
● Multiply 22 by 7
○ 66 × 21
● Then, multiply 66 by 21
○ 66 × 21 = 1,386
○ Area = 1,386 square cm or cm2
● The bilao will occupy a space of 1,386 cm2

Discussion Questions
22
● When can we use as the value of pi?
7
22
○ We can use as the value of pi if the radius is divisible
7
by 7.
● What is the difference between the formulas of area and
circumference?
○ Formulas of area and circumference
Calculating Area of a Circle

■ A=π×r×r
