Assignment 1: Survey Design & Data Analysis

Part A

Question 1: Google Form Design


Task: Create a Google Form to survey students about their study habits. The form should include at least
one of the following question types: multiple choice, short answer, checkbox, dropdown, and linear scale.
Additionally, section jumps should be implemented based on certain answers.

Guidelines:

● Title and Description: Provide a clear and engaging title for your survey. In the description,
explain the purpose of the survey and assure participants of data privacy.

● Questions:

○ Multiple Choice: Example: "How many hours do you study per day?" Options: "Less
than 1 hour", "1-3 hours", "3-5 hours", "More than 5 hours".

○ Short Answer: Example: "What is your preferred study environment?"

○ Checkbox: Example: "What study materials do you use? (Check all that apply)"
Options: "Textbooks", "Online articles", "Lecture notes", "Group study sessions".

○ Dropdown: Example: "What is your major?" Options: "Computer Science",


"Mathematics", "Physics", "Chemistry".

○ Linear Scale: Example: "On a scale of 1 to 5, how effective do you find group study
sessions?" Scale: 1 (Not effective) to 5 (Very effective).

○ Section Jumps: Based on the response to "How many hours do you study per day?",
direct students to different sections asking for more details about their study routines.

Question 2: Linking Data to Spreadsheet
Task: Link the responses from your Google Form to a Google Sheet. Ensure the data is organized

clearly. Guidelines:

● After creating the Google Form, go to the "Responses" tab and click on the green Sheets icon to
link the form to a new Google Sheet.

● Ensure the data is organized in columns corresponding to each question.

● Label the columns appropriately if necessary.

Part B

Question 3: Arithmetic Operations in Google Sheets


Task: Using the linked spreadsheet from Question 2, perform the following arithmetic operations on a set
of numerical data: mean, median, maximum, minimum, sum, and product.

Guidelines:

● Insert a new sheet or use the existing sheet to perform these operations.

● Use the appropriate functions for each calculation:

○ Mean: `=AVERAGE(range)`

○ Median: `=MEDIAN(range)`

○ Maximum: `=MAX(range)`

○ Minimum: `=MIN(range)`

○ Sum: `=SUM(range)`

○ Product: `=PRODUCT(range)`

○ If applicable, use COUNT, COUNTA, and COUNTIF functions

Question 4: Chart Creation in Google Sheets


Task: Create the following charts from the survey data: bar chart, pie chart, line chart, histogram, and
scatter plot.
Guidelines:

● Select the appropriate data for each chart type.

● Create each chart using the "Insert" menu and choose the appropriate chart type.

●​ Choose a minimum of 2 charts for display.

● Ensure the charts are correctly labelled and formatted for clarity.

Question 5: Interpreting Data from Charts


Task: Interpret the data from at least two charts you created in Question 4. Provide insights based on the
visualized data.

Guidelines:

● Choose any two charts from the bar chart, pie chart, line chart, histogram, or scatter plot.

● Write a brief interpretation (2-3 sentences) for each chart, explaining what the data shows and
any notable trends or insights.

Submission
This will be an individual assignment. Your submission should not exceed 2 pages and contain your
name, ID, and section. You should collect responses from at least 15 students.

The following sections should be in the report:

● Introduction
● Methodology
○ Survey Design
○ Data analysis
● Results & Discussion
● Links to the Google Forms and Sheets you prepared.

You should submit a pdf with filename: Assignment1_[yourId]_[section].pdf

Replace [yourID] with your IUB ID and [section] with your section, separated by a

“_”. For example, Assignment1_2412345_CIS1.pdf
