Unit 2 Science

Water is a vital natural resource necessary for life, and its limited supply requires careful management. Water flows from precipitation into streams and rivers, eventually reaching treatment plants where it is purified to remove pollutants. Air, another essential resource, is also subject to pollution from various sources, and maintaining a clean environment involves practices like recycling and conserving water.

Unit 2:

Water and Air

Water:
Water is a natural resource.
People, plants and animals need water to live.
Ponds, rivers, streams and most lakes have fresh water; however, oceans and
seas have salt water.
People use water in many ways. They drink water or use it to cook, clean,
Grow crops, make electricity and make many products.
Drinking water is also called fresh water. Almost all of Earth’s fresh water starts as
rain or snow.
Some of this fresh water sinks into ground. Some collects in rivers and lakes.
Some is frozen in glaciers.
There is only a limited amount of fresh water, so it should be used wisely.

Water flow:
Water from rain and melting snow flows downhill in small streams. These small
streams join to form larger streams and rivers. Most rivers eventually flow into
the ocean.
However, water sometimes flows into a place that is surrounded by higher land or
blocked by dam and then it moves to water treatment plant to be sent to homes.

Water treatment plant:

Water can be easily polluted, so it should be purified.
The process of treating water is complex:
First, water is pumped to a treatment plant.
Second, chemicals are added to water to eliminate dirt particles.
Third, water is filtered to remove harmful materials and bacteria.

What causes water pollution?

Plastic, sewage, industrial waste can cause water pollution.

Air:
Air is a natural resource. People, plants and animals need air to live. Otherwise,
they will die.
Air is all around us.
Air is invisible, odorless and tasteless.

Activity on existence of air:

Blowing air in balloon, whistle and musical instrument can show air.

What causes air pollution?

Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest
fires are common sources of air pollution.

How can we keep our environment clean?

Separate different types of rubbish
Turn off the water tap while brushing
Reuse paper and plastic
Take public transport
