FEG 201 2023/2024 TEST QUESTIONS

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

To be submitted on 17/07/2024

1. Find the directional derivative of 𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 2 𝑧𝑧 2 at the point (1, 1, -1) in the direction ofthe tangent to the

curve 𝑥𝑥 = 𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡 , 𝑦𝑦 = sin 2𝑡𝑡 + 1, 𝑧𝑧 = 1 − cos 𝑡𝑡 at 𝑡𝑡 = 0.

2. Show that the vectors 5𝑎𝑎⃗ + 6𝑏𝑏⃗ + 7𝑐𝑐⃗, 7𝑎𝑎⃗ − 8𝑏𝑏⃗ + 9𝑐𝑐⃗ and 3𝑎𝑎⃗ + 20𝑏𝑏⃗ + 5𝑐𝑐⃗ are coplanar, 𝑎𝑎⃗, 𝑏𝑏⃗, 𝑐𝑐⃗

being three non-collinear vectors.

3. Find 𝑚𝑚 so that the vectors 2𝑖𝑖̂ − 4𝑗𝑗̂ + 5𝑘𝑘; 𝑖𝑖̂ − 𝑚𝑚𝑗𝑗̂ + 𝑘𝑘 and 3𝑖𝑖̂ + 2𝑗𝑗̂ − 5𝑘𝑘 are coplanar.

5. (a) If 𝜙𝜙 = 3𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 − 𝑦𝑦 3 𝑧𝑧 2 ; find 𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝜙𝜙 at the point (1, −2, −1). (b) Find the unit vector normal to the

surface 𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 3 𝑧𝑧 2 = 4 at (−1, −1, 2).

6. Find the constants 𝑚𝑚 and 𝑛𝑛 such that the surface 𝑚𝑚𝑥𝑥 2 − 2𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛𝑛 = (𝑚𝑚 + 4)𝑥𝑥 will be orthogonal to the

surface 4𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 + 𝑧𝑧 3 = 4 at the point (1, −1, 2).

circle 𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑦𝑦 2 = 1, corresponding to the surface of sphere of unit radius.
