Lesson

Lesson Graphing the Standard Form of

the equation of a circle
2
2 2
(x−h) +¿

What I Need to Know

In the previous lesson, you were able to graph the equation of a circle x2+y2 =
r2. This lesson will teach you how to graph the Standard Form of the equation of a
circle (x−h)2 +( y−k )2=r 2. This equation is also known as the Center – Radius form.

What’s New

For your mastery, you need to analyze the example below.

Draw the graph of the Standard Form of the circle.
2 2
(x−1) +( y +5) =100 and determine the center and the radius.

5
Solution: The Standard Form of the equation of the circle (x−1)2+( y +5)2=100 can
be written in the form ( x−h)2 +( y−k )2=r 2
2
( x−1) +( y −(−5)) =¿10
2 2 2 2
( x−1) +( y +5) =100

Thus, the center of the circle is (1, -5) and its radius is 10 units. Its graph is
shown below

What is it

The lesson for today is about the graph of the standard equation of a circle
with center of (h, k) and a radius of r units is (x−h)2 +( y−k )2=r 2. The values of h and
k indicates that the circle is translated h units horizontally and k units vertically from
the origin. To graph the standard equation or the center-radius form, all you need do
is plot the center of the circle at (h,k), and then count out from the center r units in
four directions (right, left, above, below) then, connect these four points with a
smooth curve to form a round circle.

P (x,y)

(h,k)

What’s More
6
To know more about the lesson, try to practice the following exercises.
Draw the graph of the standard form of the equation of a circle.
2 2 2
1. (x−2) +( y −4) =3
2 2 2
2. ( x +1) +( y +5) =4
2 2
3. (x−5) +( y +5) =36
2 2
4. ( x +4 ) +( y−6) =49
2 2
5. (x−3) +( y−7) =6

What I Have Learned

This is to check how far have you understand your lesson.

Draw the graph of a circle that satisfies the given conditions.

1. The center is (-2,3) and the radius is 4.

2. The endpoints of the diameter are (-6,2) and (-2,4)
3. The center is (-2, -7) and is tangent to the x-axis.
4. It is tangent to the y-axis at (0,9) and its center lies on the line x=4
5. It is tangent to the y-axis at (0, -4), its center is in the third quadrant, and its
radius is 4.

What I Can Do

Let’s check your understanding. Answer the situation below.

2 2

What I Need to Know

Hello! Welcome to Lesson 3. In this lesson, you will know how to graph the
general equation of a circle x 2+ y 2+ Dx + Ey+ F=0. In order to graph the general
equation of a circle, you need to transform/rewrite this equation to a standard form or
center-radius form.

What’s New
Here is an example for you to master the topic. Analyze
and understand.
Draw the graph of a circle x 2+ y 2−6 x−10 y +18=0 and find the center
and the radius of the circle
Solution: The equation of the circle x 2+ y 2−6 x−10 y +18=0 is written in general
form. To determine its center and radius. Write the equation in the form
2 2 2
( x−h) +( y−k ) =r
2 2 2 2
x + y −6 x−10 y +18=0 x +−6 x+ y −10 y=−18
Add to both sides of the equation x 2+−6 x+ y 2−10 y=−18 the square of one-half the
coefficient of x and the square of one-half the coefficient of y.

1 1
(−6 )=−3 ; (−3 )2=9 (−10 )=−5; (−5 )2=25
2 2

2 2
Simplify: x +−6 x+ 9+ y −10 y +25=−18+9+25
2 2
x +−6 x+ 9+ y −10 y +25=16
2
( x +−6 x+ 9)+( y ¿¿ 2−10 y +25)=16 ¿

8
In rewriting, we obtain (x−3)2 +( y−5)2=16 or (x−3)2 +( y−5)2=4 2. The
center of the circle is at (3,5) and its radius is 4

What I Need to Know

In your previous grade, you learned how to plot point in coordinate plane. This
time, you can graph other geometrical figures using your previous knowledge in
plotting point. You have at least one hour to finish this module.

What’s New

Here is an example for you to analyze the topic.

Plot each set of points on the coordinate plane, then connect the consecutive
points by a line segment and describe each figure form.
1. A (-4,0), B (0,6), C (4,0)

A C

The triangle form is an isosceles triangle. Since segment AB is congruent to

segment BC.

What Is It

11
Today’s lesson is about graphing other geometrical figures. To plot any point,
start at the origin, where the two axes cross. The first number tells you how far to go
to the right (if positive) or left (if negative) along the horizontal axis while the second
number tells you how far to go above (if positive) or below (if negative) along the
vertical axis. Then connect the points with a segment to form a geometrical figure.

What’s More
To further your knowledge, try these practice exercises.

Plot each set of points on the coordinate plane. Then connect the consecutive
points by a line segment and describe each figure form.

1.C (0,6), A (0,0), B (10, 0)

2. H (-3,3), O (3,3), M (3, -3), E (-5, -3)
3. V (-3,3), I (7,3), C (5, -3), E (-5, -3)
4. C (-2,0), O (-4,4), V (-2,8), I (2,8), D (4,4), E (2,0)

Name the missing coordinates in terms of the given variables.

1. 2. B (0,d)
B (?,b)
3.
B (?,?) c (-b,c)

A (-a,0) C (?,?)

A (-a,0) D (0,0) A (-a,0) D (?,?) C (8a,0)

D (?,?)

What I Can Do

Apply what you have learned by answering the situation below.

12
The treasure hunters wanted to find Danlims treasure somewhere in
Bukidnon. They start digging at the coordinate A (-7,0) going to North 7 meters
away, turn right going to west 10 meters away, turn right again going south 12
meters, turn left going to west 5 meters and get the treasure. (Its grid is equivalent to
1 meter)
1. Sketch the graph.
2. What is the coordinate of the treasure?
3.

Summary
