STA201_Assignment 1 Question (Summer2024)
STA201_Assignment 1 Question (Summer2024)
The following table shows some information on a variety of different vehicles. Using the
Information given in table 1, answer question 1(A) – 1(C). [3.5+4.5+3.5]
Table-1: Vehicles
Model Engine Cylinders Transmission Number Fuel Vehicle City Hwy Model
size of gears Class MPG MPG Year
ACURA RDX 3.5 6 Automatic 6 Gasoline small 19 28 2010
SUV
HYUNDAI 1.6 4 Manual 7 Gasoline large car 28 38 2015
Sonata
Ford Fiesta 1.6 4 Manual 5 Gasoline Small car 28 36 2006
Question 1(A)
(i) How many variables are listed in table 1?
(ii) Classify the variables according to their types (Qualitative / Quantitative).
(iii) Construct a frequency distribution table to represent the summary information of the
Variable “Vehicle Class” and display the results in a pie chart.
Question 1(B)
(i) What is the modal response for the variable “Transmission”? (Which has the highest
frequency?)
(ii) What proportion of vehicles have seven gears?
(iii) What proportion of Automatic vehicles have eight gears?
(iv) What proportion of vehicles with six gears are Manual?
(v) Construct a side-by-side bar chart to represent the information g i v e n in table 2.
Question 1(C)
Complete the following table and answer the questions:
Do running times of American movies differ somehow from running times of French movies?
A researcher investigated this question by randomly selecting 25 recent movies of each type,
resulting in the following running times:
Fr: 123 116 90 158 122 119 125 90 96 94 137 102 105
106 95 125 122 103 96 111 81 113 128 93 92
Construct a comparative stem-and-leaf display by listing stems in the middle of your paper and
then placing the Am leaves out to the left and the Fr leaves out to the right. Then comment on the
interesting features and shape of the plot using central tendency values. [2+3+2.5]
Question 3
You are given the following table where the data set represents the record high temperatures in
degree Fahrenheit (℉) for a particular city’s different state: [2.5+2+2]
Here, X & Y are the last two digits of your student ID (i.e., 19100012, 20123478, etc.). [If your ID is
19100012 then, the No. of States in the last row (90 – 100) will be √25+1+2 = 8]. Estimate the
following measure of central tendencies:
i. Mean
ii. Median
iii. Mode
Question 4
(i) A group of colleagues is going to Safari Park for a day. They arranged their trip into three halves
and planned to travel at a speed of 68 kilometers per hour on their journey to their goal. Their
top speeds were 72 km/h and 88 km/h for the first and second parts, respectively. If they are
to meet their intended average speed, what speed should they maintain throughout the third
part of their journey? [4.0]
(ii) Suppose, you spent Tk. 3,500,000 to buy a new car. After the first year, the car depreciates by
40%, 20% after the second year, and 10% after the third year.
[3+2.5]
(a) What is the average rate of depreciation per year after three years?
(b) What will be the value of the car after three years of use?
Question 5
A Benchmark company is testing the Computer Power Supply Unit (PSU) of two different
companies X and Y. PSUs were tested at 120% stress to check for the overvoltage protection.
The following data in Table 5, represent time to failure (in hours) for random samples taken
from the days’ production of the companies. [15.0]
a) Determine the three-quartile values for Failure time (in hours) of the PSU of both X and Y
Company. [2+2=4]
b) Construct a comparative boxplot (two boxplots on the same set of axes, one above the
other) [2.0]
c) Describe (Compare and Contrast) the X and Y in your own words from the boxplot. [2.0]
d) Compute the sample mean, variance, and standard deviation for the time to failure for
company X. [2.0]
e) Compute the sample mean, variance, and standard deviation for the time to failure for
company Y. [2.0]
f) Compute the Coefficient of variation for the time to failure for company X. [0.5]
g) Compute the Coefficient of variation for the time to failure for company Y. [0.5]
h) Which measure should one consider to compare the performance / consistency of the
products of the two companies? And why? [1.5]
i) Which company’s product is more consistent in their performance? [0.5]
Question 6
You are given the following data pertaining to kilowatt hours of electricity consumed by some
users in the city of Dhaka:
[7.0]
Consumption Number of
(in Kilowatt hours) users
20 – 30 13
30 – 40 35
40 – 50 25
50 – 60 23
60 – 70 0+X
Where X is the sum of the last two digits of your University ID. For example: if your university
ID is: 18123456 then X would be 5 + 6 = 11. Estimate the following:
a) sample variance and the sample standard deviation [3.5]
b) mean deviation [2.5]
c) coefficient of variation. [1.0]
Question 7
For a distribution Karl Pearson’s coefficient of skewness is 0.64, Variance is 40 and mean is
√(𝑋 + 𝑌 + 𝑍 ) Find mode and median. [Here X,Y,Z = First 3 digits of you Student ID] [3.0]
