ASSIGNMENT 1

HISTORY OF HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

 What is Human Computer Interaction?

- Is a cross – disciplinary area ( eg. Engineering, psychology, ergonomics, design) that deals with
the theory, design, implementation, and evaluation of the ways that human use and interact
with computing devices.

 Interaction is a concept to be distinguished from another similar term interface.

In sumary about Human Computer Interaction(HCI)

 Early Beginnings (1940s-1950s): Computers were operated using punch cards and
switches, with minimal direct human interaction.

 Interactive Computing (1960s-1970s): Introduction of the mouse and graphical user

interface (GUI) by pioneers like Douglas Engelbart and Ivan Sutherland.

 Personal Computers (1980s): PCs became accessible to the public, with user-friendly
GUIs from Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows.

 World Wide Web (1990s-2000s): Internet and web browsers revolutionized HCI,
emphasizing usability and user-centered design.

 Mobile and Touch Interfaces (2000s-2010s): Emergence of smartphones and tablets, with
touchscreens, gesture-based controls, and voice assistants.

 Modern Era (2010s-Present): Advancements in virtual reality (VR), augmented reality

(AR), and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on immersive and personalized experiences.

FOUNDERS OF HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

VANNEVAR BUSH

 Technology Research is about Conceiving Hypertext and the World Wide Web.
 And the year Established was in 1945.
 Name of the research was Bush’s Memex
 He did the construction and saving a trail (chain of links) through the material based on
microfilm records but not implemented

J.C.R. LICKLIDER

 Technology Research is about to Produced goals that are pre-requisite to man-

computer symbiosis that immediate goals like time sharing of computers among many users,
and having long term vision of natural language understanding (syntax, semantics, pragmatics),
speech recognition of arbitrary computer users and heuristic programming.

 And the year Established was in 1960

 Name of the research was man-computer symbiosis.
 He did the illusion that each user was on their own personal machine, led to immediate need to
support human-computer interaction by dramatically increased accessibility of machines,
afforded interactive systems and languages vs batch “jobs” and community as a whole
communicated through computers (and eventually through networks) via email, shared files, etc.
due to reducing of time-sharing.

DOUGLAS ENGELBART

 Technology Research is about Conceptual Framework for Augmenting Human Intellect which
mean increasing the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, gain
comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems.
 And the Year of Established was in 1962
 Name of the Research was SRI Report which at end cause first discovery of mouse in 1964
 He develop new techniques, procedures, and systems that will better adapt people's basic
information-handling capabilities to the needs, problems, and progress of society.

ALAN KAY

 Technology Research is about Dynabook vision (and cardboard prototype) of a notebook

computer which deals with having your own self-contained knowledge manipulator in a
portable package the size and shape of an ordinary notebook that had enough power to out-
race your senses of sight and hearing, enough capacity to store for later retrieval thousands
of page-equivalents of reference materials, poems, letters, recipes, records, drawings,
animations, musical scores.
 And the Year of Established was in 1969.
 Name of the Research was Dynabook vision (and cardboard prototype) of a notebook
 computer
 He develop notebook computer which can be portable package in size and shape and has
enough power to out-race your senses of sight and hearing and capacity of storing for later
retrieval thousands of page-equivalents of reference materials.
