Basic Networking Hardware - Lesson 6 Document

The document provides an overview of computer networking, defining it as a group of interconnected systems that facilitate communication and resource sharing. It details various networking devices such as hubs, switches, and routers, along with their functions and types. Additionally, it discusses transmission media, including wired and wireless connections, and the equipment required to set up a local area network (LAN).

Network
What is Networking?

➢ A computer network is a group of computer

systems and other computing hardware
devices that are linked together through
communication channels to facilitate
communication and resource-sharing among
a wide range of users
➢ Networking is the process involved in
connecting this groups of systems together.
➢ Therefore the basics of networking are:
➢ the networking devices and
➢ the transmission medium (communication channel)
➢ Network devices are components used to
connect computers or other electronic
devices together so that they can share
files or resources like printers or fax
machines
Networking
Devices ➢ Devices used to setup a Local Area
Network (LAN) are the most common type
of network devices used by the public. A
LAN requires a hub, switch, or router
HUB
A hub is the most basic
networking device that
connects multiple computers
or other network devices
together

A hub broadcasts all network

data across each connection

4 PORT HUB
SWITCHES
➢ A network switch (also called
switching hub, bridging hub,
officially MAC bridge) is a
computer networking device that
connects devices together on a
computer network, by using
packet switching to receive,
process and forward data to the
destination device.
➢ Packet switching is a mode of data
transmission in which a message is
broken into a number of parts 8 PORT SWITCH
which are sent independently,
over whatever route is optimum
for each packet, and reassembled
at the destination
TYPES OF SWITCHES
UNMANAGED SWITCHES MANAGED SWITCHES
➢ No configuration interface or options These switches have one or more
methods to modify the operation of the
➢ Plug and play switch.
➢ Least expensive switches Common management methods include:
➢ Often used in a small office/home ➢ A command-line interface (CLI)
office environment accessed via serial console, telnet or
Secure Shell
➢ Can be desktop or rack mounted
➢ An embedded Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) agent
allowing management from a remote
console or management station
➢ A web interface for management from
a web browser.
ROUTERS
➢ A router is a networking device
that forwards data packets
between computer networks
➢ Routers perform the traffic
directing functions on the
Internet
➢ A data packet is typically
forwarded from one router to
another through the networks
that constitute the internetwork
until it reaches its destination

CONNECTIONS
Types of Connection
➢ Wired
➢ Wired networking cables are networking hardware used to connect one network device to
other network devices or to connect two or more computers to share printers, scanners etc.
➢ Types of cables include:
➢ Coaxial
➢ Optical fibre
➢ Twisted pair
➢ Unshielded
➢ Shielded

➢ Wireless
➢ This transmission mediums generally use radio communications to connect network nodes
E.g. Wi-Fi
➢ For wireless LANs, a key component is the wireless hub, or access point, used for signal
distribution
Types of Cable
COAXIAL OPTICAL FIBRE
TWISTED PAIR
Types of Twisted Pair Cables
UNSHIELDED SHIELDED
UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) Cables
➢ CAT5 (CATEGORY 5)
➢ Supports Transfer rates of 10Mbps/100Mbps

➢ CAT5e (CATEGORY 5 ENHANCED)

➢ Supports Transfer rates of 10Mbps/100Mbps/1000Mbps

➢ CAT6(CATEGORY 6)
➢ Support Transfer rates of 10Mbps /100Mbps /1000Mbps/10000Mbps
ACCESS POINT / WIRELESS HUB
Equipment required to set up
a local area network
WIRED WIRELESS

➢ Switch (+ power cable) ➢ Wireless hub / access point )+

➢ Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
Cables(Cat5e/Cat6) ➢ Computer with wireless network
information card (NIC) installed
➢ Computers (with Network Cards OR a plug-in USB wireless NIC
Installed)
