appointment for which they are waiting begins.
 All the offices are connected through this.
 Waiting areas, having a large sitting space should not disturb the circulation.

PRINCIPAL AND OFFICE ROOMS

 Principal and office rooms should have direct access to the staff work
area.
 The office windows should command views of the main entrance and
work areas, Pro- vision of space for a small conference table in the office
is necessary. Always a second exit should be included for the suite.
RECORD ROOM
 Student Records Room Provide a separate, secure, fire resistant area
for storage of con- fidential records. This room shall be 1 hour fire
rated and lockable.
STAFF ROOM
 Staff room is one of the most important, yet often neglected areas in the
whole school.
 When it comes to priority for maintenance and refurbishment, teacher's
offices and staff zones generally fall to the bottom of pile. Staff rooms
and faculty offices should be designed in a way that help your staff to
perform to the best of their ability.

CONFERENCE ROOM
The Conference is used for formal meeting, training, and teleconference
activities, Visitors as well as the principal should be able to access this room
easily.
These space types are generally finished with durable materials and surfaces
that pro- vide added conferencing and meeting functionality such as marker
boards and projection screens.
Ambient lighting with dimmable controls and special accent lighting is
typically used to allow user control for presentation purposes.

for ramps 50
PROVISION FOR STAIRWAYS-
 doors 75
 Educational institutions:
 Stair case width -2m
 Raiser height minimum-0.15m
 Limited 12 per flight
 Handrails minimum height of 0.9 m from the centre of the tread
 Tread-minimum 0.30 m
Ne combustible material shall be used for decoration/wall panelling in
staircase Interior staircases shall be constructed as self contained unit with
atleast one side adjacent to an external wall and shall be completely enclosed
ACADEMIC BLOCK
LECTURE HALL:
 A lecture theatre is an expensive facility and the utilization of lecture
theatres is often very low, being used for a few hours a day, and only by
a few people at a time
 It should be flexible, in that it should be able to perform different
functions e.g. lecture, cinema, demonstration, theatre etc.
 It may be flexible in size, to be able to fit different audience group size.
Divisible lecture halls are more accepted.
 It should be shared and centrally timetabled and located and not be the
territory of one department

LIBRARY DESIGN

 Study and reading areas

 Study area is the most important part of a library.
 The recommended size of each individual table is 900 X 600 mm. if
tables are arranged in rows this will have to be increased to 900 X900
mm.
 Each reader allowance in reading area should be 2.3 m giving him the
share of circula- tion within the room.
 A long table can accommodate upto 12 readers: the width of such a table
should be 1200mm.
 It is recommended that long tables should have central division
 Bookshelves are in various sizes, but it has been established that at least
90% books are 230mm deep.
 Library could standardise on 230mm wide shelving, with special runs of
shelving (lim- ited number) 300mm wide for books over 230mm wide.
 Manufacturer offer three lengths of shelving in their system-750mm,
900mm, and Im. Wall shelving should never be higher than 2m
(preferably 1.8 m).

 Island shelves in lending libraries should not be higher than 1.5 m and
1.375 is preferred.
 No shelf in public areas should be lower than 300 mm from the floor.
 It should be shared and centrally timetabled and located and not be the
territory of one department

CANTEEN
 Canteen should be planned so that variety of seating arrangement can be
achieved
 Also consider banquet or booth seating, but normal tables to give
flexibility should sup- plement these
 The degree to which food preparation is to be a visual element and
degree of isolation of individual tables are fundamental to design
 Cash desk may be at entrance or by service doors or with in kitchen area
depending on cash system operated by management.
 same level is most economic arrangement to operate. Service entrances
at the back of the kitchen, a square kitchen, a rectangular dining
room with entrance at one side and pantry along one side provide the
best arrangement

 Allow an approx. area for dining of 1.2 sqmt. Per diner.

 Space requirement

 Square Tables in Rows

 Parallel Sitting 2-1.7 to 2.0 m2 (18 to 22 sq. ft.)

 Parallel Sitting 4-1.3 to 2.0 m2 (14 to 18 sq. ft.)

 Parallel Sitting 2-1.0 to 1.2 m2 (11 t13 sq. ft.)

 Rectangular Sitting in Rows.

 Sitting 4-1.3 to 1.5 m2 (14 to 16 sq. ft.)

 Circular Table in Rows

 Sitting 4-0.9 to 1.4 m2 (1 to 15 sq. ft.)

Total Sitting Area required for a dining hall

 Capacity 50-1.7 x 50-85 m2 (915 sq. At.)
 Capacity 70-1.7x80136 m2 (1465 sq. ft.)
 Capacity 100-1.7 x 100 = 170 m2 (1830 sq. ft.)
 Main gangway width <1.2M (4'-0")
 Service Aisles <9 to 1.35m (3'-0" to 4°-0")

HOSTELS
Introduction
 The entrance hall shall serve as reception and waiting area
 Hostels are generally run by a manager or warden. The office requires
central positions which can supervise the main entrance.
 Desirable area- 18 sqmt...
 The common room shall comprise of the recreation area indoor games,
TV room reading hall etc
 Area of the common room @0.9sqmt per bed.

PARKING
 Dimensions of vehicle parking spaces in parking bays range from
1.80x4.60 m to 2.50x 6.00m

 Parking arrangements should be clear and organized, using road
