DISCUSSION

A. Definition
What is an adverb clause? Clause itself is a group of words and in
this case, it consists of subject and verb. Meanwhile, adverb has the
meaning of adverb. So, adverb clause means a collection of subject and
verb that acts as an adverb.
So, the sentence itself has two clauses, one of which is the main
form of the sentence. The adverb clause is not the main sentence and can
be omitted without changing the meaning of the main sentence. Adverbs
are just optional in a sentence.

B. Function
There are various functions of the adverb clause that we must
understand. That way, we can understand why this clause in English
sentences is important to use on various occasions.

1. Being an Adverb
The addition of an adverb in a sentence serves to add context.
Although it is optional, this clause can provide more information to the
reader or listener so that the information becomes more complete.

2. Information after Conjunction

Have you learned about conjunctions? Some types of conjunctions
require an adverb clause to tail the information. That way, the sentence
becomes effective. In this case, the adverb also doubles up as a
modifier in the sentence.

2
C. Formula
The use of an adverb clause must use a formula that consists of a
subject, verb, and a subordinate conjunction. No matter what kind of
adverb clause is used, the formula is only one, which is:

Subordinate conjunction + subject + verb

Subordinate conjunction is a conjunction that shows time, place,

purpose, and others that are only introductory in nature in the sentence.
Subject is a noun, both abstract and non-abstract. While verb is the action
performed by the subject.

D. Types of Adverb Clause

1. Adverb Clauses of Time
This adverb describes when an event happened. Usually, the
adverbs used are when, after, while, before, since, until, as, and as soon
as. You can use them in various tenses according to the time context.
2. Adverb Clauses of Place
These adverbs describe the position or place of an event.
Examples of adverbial clauses of place that are often used are where,
everywhere, and wherever. This adverb clause can be located in the
front or back of the sentence.

happen. The conjunctions used are provided that, unless, and if.
4. Adverb Clauses of Manner
This adverb clause shows how something happens. The
conjunctions used are as if, like, and as though.
5. Adverb Clauses of Purpose

3
Adverbial clauses of purpose are clauses that explain the
purpose of why an event happened. You can use so that and in order
that in the sentence.
6. Adverb Clauses of Contrast
In the example of adverb clause of contrast, you will find that
the sentence uses even though, although, though, and while to show
contrast.
7. Adverb Clauses of effect

common conjunctions such as so...that.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

A. Conclusion
An adverb clause is a group of words that functions as an adverb in a
sentence, providing additional information about time, place, condition, manner,
purpose, contrast, effect, comparison, or reason. While it is not essential to the
sentence and can be omitted without altering the core meaning, an adverb clause
enhances the clarity and detail of the sentence. The adverb clause follows a
standard formula: subordinate conjunction + subject + verb.
There are several types of adverb clauses, each serving a specific purpose,
such as expressing when an event occurs, the location of the event, the conditions
under which something happens, and the reasons behind actions or events.

B. Suggestions
1. Practice Identifying Adverb Clauses: To better understand and use
adverb clauses, practice identifying them in sentences and recognize the
different types and their functions. This will help improve sentence
structure and clarity.
2. Use a Variety of Conjunctions: Experiment with different conjunctions to
create a variety of adverb clauses in your writing. This will allow you to
convey more nuanced information and enhance your communication.
3. Focus on Sentence Fluidity: While adverb clauses are optional, make
sure they are placed correctly within sentences for maximum clarity and
effectiveness. Practice positioning them at the beginning or end of a
sentence to see how the flow of information changes.

8
4. Improve Writing through Detail: Make use of adverb clauses to provide
additional context, details, and explanations. This can help make your
writing more engaging and informative.
