23°: PREFACE New Syllabus Mathematics (NSM) is a series of textbooks and workbooks designed to prepare students for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-level examination in Mathematics. ‘Together with the textbook, the workbook wil provide students with ample practice to apply the various skils and concepts leamt to solving problems in both examination and real-ife situations, The workbook contains the following features: Revision Notes are found at the start of each chapter. They Fe emphasise the important concepts and formulae in the chapter. size Pine urstons prove stadonswihawiderangeot questons Pr turer practice ‘The questions are classified into three levels of cific. * BASIE questions require students to use specific skills and concepts in the chapter directly to solve problems, + INTERMEDIATE questions require students to apply their skis and concepts to solve problems * ADVANCED questions require students to apply various skis and concepts, including the use of problem-solving skis, to solve problems. Revision Exercise ‘The Revision Exercise is found after every few chapters to help students to recall and consolidate all the concepts leamt in these chapters. Mid-Year Specimen Papers and End-Year Specimen Papers ‘The Mid-Year Specimen Papers and End-Year Specimen Papers have been written to follow closely to the format of school's Mid-Year and End-of-Year examinations, Itis hoped that when students use this book, to reinforce the concepts that they are weak in, they will eventually gain success in Mathematics. ied CONTENTS Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Revision Test At Revision Test A2 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 Revision Test C1 Revision Test C2 Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15 Revision Test D1 Revision Test D2 Primes, Highest Common Factor and Lowest Common Muttiple Integers, Rational Numbers and Real Numbers Approximation and Estimation Basic Algebra and Algebraic Manipulation Linear Equations and Simple Inequalities, Functions and Linear Graphs Number Patterns Year Specimen Paper A ‘Year Specimen Paper B Percentage Ratio, Rate and Speed Basic Geometry Triangles, Quadtilaterals and Polygons Geometrical Constructions Perimeter and Area of Plane Figures Volume and Surface Area of Prisms and Cylinders Statistical Data Handling End-Year Specimen Paper A End-Year Specimen Paper B Answers 004 009 024 034 095 105 447 4125 143 454 153 155 474 181 193 195 197 203 209 Primes, Highest Common Factor CHAPTER | and Lowest Common Multiple =_ rae e= 2 3. 4. 5. Approximation and CHAPTERW Estimation = e= ‘There are three situations when approximation is used 1. The actual value is known but it is not used for various reasons such as ‘+ the actual value is not necessary, + itis easier to remember an approximate value than the actual value, + itis too messy to write a long string of digits for non-exact numbers, ‘+ itis impossible for calculators to store all the digits of non-exact numbers. 2. The exact value cannot be obtained due to the limitation of the measuring instrument used, but we do nor use cstimation to obtain an approximate value. 3. The actual value is too troublesome or impossible to obtain, and so we need to use estimation to obtain an approximate value which can be very far off from the actual value 4. ‘There are five rules to identify digits in a number which are significant. Rule 1 Rule 2: Rule3: Rule4: Rule 5: All non-zero di All zeros between non-zero digits are significant Il zeros after a non-zero digit are significant. Ina decimal, all zeros before a non-zero digit are riot In whole numbers, the zeros at the end may or may not be significant, Ina deci gnificant It depends on how the numbers are approximated, 5. Generally, we count significant figures from the first non-zero number starting from the left. BASIC 1, Round off 789 532 to the nearest (a) 100, (b) 1000, (©) 10000. 2.
