The Indian National Education Policy (NEP), as enacted in 2020, emphasizes the inclusion of IKS
into curriculums at all levels of education; in line with this, the National Credit Framework
(NCF) has made it possible for students to earn credit in courses relating to ancient Indian
sciences and arts. IKS is also being included under the Vision 2047 for Bharatiya
Rasayanasastra initiative.In the 2022-2023 budget, IKS's financial allocation was doubled to
₹20 crore (US$2.4 million).
Under University Grants Commission (UGC)
guidelines, it is advised that 5 per cent of a student's total credits should be in IKS courses at
the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.[9] The UGC aims to train 1.5 million teachers in
IKS by 2025,[2] and has launched an online IKS MOOC course2023 budget, IKS's financial
allocation was doubled to ₹20 crore (US$2.4 million).
The National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 acknowledges
the profound heritage of ancient and enduring Indian
knowledge and philosophy as a guiding principle. The Indian
Knowledge Systems encompass Jñāna, Vijñāna, and Jīvan
Darśan, which have evolved through experience, observation,
experimentation, and thorough analysis. This tradition of
validation and practical application has significantly influenced
various facets of our society, including education, arts,
administration, law, justice, health, manufacturing, and
commerce. It has also left its mark on classical and other
languages of Bharat, transmitted through textual, oral, and
artistic traditions. In this context, "Knowledge of India"
encompasses wisdom from ancient India, along with its
achievements, challenges, and India's future aspirations,
particularly in the realms of education, health, environment,
and all aspects of life.
This course will prepare the teachers and aspiring teachers to understand
the Indian Knowledge system. With the introduction of New Education
Policy-NEP 2020 Indian Knowledge Systems is a prime focus and Intelligence
Traditions of India have to be showcased to the world. This course gives an
overview of the rich and varied knowledge traditions of India. This also
helps the learner to know the legacy possessed by ancient India. The
prevalent practices of the past that were beyond time and were sustainable.
In the present context there is much need to evaluate the past practices and
deploy them for the betterment of society. This course also enables the
learner think independently and originally with Indian frameworks and
models for solving the problems of the present-day professional world. This
Swayam MOOC’s provides a platform for all the teachers of higher
education institutes to develop awareness about the Indian Knowledge
system. It attempts to showcase the practices of the ancient India that in the
present day look as a scientific marvel and the practices were much ahead
of their times. The course can be taken as an overview and exposure for the
teachers in the IKS area. The concepts learnt would act as an aid to
undertake the sessions on IKS fundamentals that can be offered as an
independent course in the technical and non-technical diploma/ UG/PG
Programs. The concepts can also be mapped with existing professional
courses at suitable places with examples.
SUPPORTING ARGUMENT
The work of the IKS division has been interpreted by some as being guided by a mission to preserve Indian heritage apply
ancient knowledge to modern problems such as climate change and decolonise Indian education in a way that reduces
undue Western influences.
The IKS Division of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) selected 15 research topics covering six focus areas
ranging from Science and Engineering to Linguistics, Arts, Management, Yoga, and Indian Traditional Knowledge Base. The
main vision is to train researchers who will embody the ‘Indian way’ of doing research.
