DESIGN OF STUDENT CLUB & ITS WEBSITE

Section L: Learning Roadmap

L1 Why this project and what will I learn?
Context
Vibrant student clubs have an important role to play in your personal development, be it pursuing a form of
art or a sport or a hobby or an environmental or social cause that you care about. Besides the focused
pursuit of a theme, a student club provides you with opportunities for collaborating and developing long
lasting friendships. In today’s world, building a student club website is free
and easy. A website serves a very important purpose of providing information to and engaging club
members, for attracting new members, for coordinating activities, and much more. In this unit, you will
develop the “Take Ownership” mindset, form a student club, develop its details and design its website. In
the next unit, you’ll actually develop the website for your student club.

Group Activity
Form groups of 4 to 6 students and discuss the following questions and provide the group’s responses.
1. In your group, study and discuss this unit’s learning roadmap given in the next couple pages.
2. Representatives from each group will be asked to present and explain one of the following:
a. Unit’s Statement of Inquiry (SoI), associated concepts, global context exploration.
b. Inquiry questions to explore in this unit.
c. Technology to learn/use, ATL skills to enhance, Entrepreneur mindset to develop
d. Design cycle strands are to be assessed in this unit.

Unit Flow
This unit begins with an overview of what you'll learn, followed by inspiration from Ms. Sarita's story to
help you propose a student club and create its website. You'll explore the importance of student clubs
and examine some existing ones for ideas before developing your own club proposal. In groups, you'll
brainstorm the club’s mission, activities, and structure, then move on to designing the website. You’ll
learn how to build a basic site, gather inspiration from other club websites, and add your chosen
features while creating a sitemap and wireframes. Finally, you’ll prepare to turn your website design
into a real website in the next unit.

Context
You're about to begin an exciting project: creating a new student club and
making its website. Let's understand the steps involved and how to
approach them.
First, we need to see the whole plan. We'll be doing several tasks in a
specific sequence. This project is split into two units, and by the end,
you'll have made two things: a club for students and a website for it. The
interesting part is, even though the two things have their unique designs,
they are interconnected and evaluated as a whole.

Group Activity
1. Form groups of 4-5 students. Discuss about the order in which you would need to do
the following tasks, and fill in the desired sequence numbers between 1 to 8 in the Seq
No. column. Then check against the order of tasks given on the next page.

Seq

No.

Visually design your club’s website on paper showing how various pages would show different
aspects of the club.

Explore designs of other clubs’ websites, and understand which web elements are used there.
Discuss and choose the web elements that you would like in your club’s website.

Have your peers evaluate both your club and its website using the evaluation parameters
listed for each.

Understand why are student clubs needed and what existing clubs offer.

Develop an action plan for how your group will implement the website represented in the
visual design.

Decide on which club you would like to have and develop ideas regarding your club’s benefits
and how it will run.

List giving reasons what changes you made to the action plan, the website design and club
design while developing the website.

Create your club’s website following the action plan & design, including pages about the club.

see the video https://youtu.be/EPzJzAScdKQ on Richard Byrne’s
youtube channel where the history teacher easily creates a basic
website.

Let's Think
★ While a club can function without a website, why is a website important for
the success of the club?

Takeaway
Real life is complex. Since you deal with real life projects in EMDD, you will learn to
deal with the complexity. Hope you all have a clear understanding of what you will be
doing in these two units and in what sequence. If you still have doubts about what you
will be doing in these two units, please browse through the introduction pages of the
two units.
Here's the cool part: by the time we're done, you'll have helped create an actual student
club and its very own website. Imagine that! It's going to be something you can be
really proud of.
To amplify your excitement, you'll hear an incredible story in the next class. It revolves
around Ms. Sarita, and her life journey is poised to inspire you to take the lead and
make this project uniquely yours. Are you ready to be inspired?

Context
Read the poem below:

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference”

❖ What do you think the poem is about?

❖ Let’s go into the activity to understand the poem better.

Activity
❖ Read the story of Sarita Sarvaria in your group.
❖ Complete the narrative outline given after the story.
❖ Discuss and answer the reflection questions given under “Let’s Think” section.

Story
This is Sarita Sarvaria’s story. She started her professional journey in the hotel
industry at the age of 21 years. She worked very hard for the first 5 years. She also
got an award for her work. Once, she got an opportunity to visit London from her
work. She was amazed to see the cleanliness of the hotel that she stayed in. Talking
to the staff there, she came to know that this work was done by housekeeping
companies there. She realized that there was no tradition of housekeeping
companies yet in India. However, if such a venture could be initiated, it could go a
long way and earn a lot of profit.
When she returned to Delhi from London, she expressed her wish to start a
housekeeping business to her boss. Her boss tried to explain to her, “It is not an easy
task. You have a good enough job, why do you want to leave it?” When her
acquaintances came to know that she was thinking of starting a housekeeping
company, they also discouraged her a lot and said, “Now will you do cleaning work?”
At the same time, her relatives wanted to get her married and leave work altogether.

9-4 P2 (i)
9-4
P2
On one side, all this was going on and on the other hand, Sarita was constantly thinking about
the new opportunity – Will her co-workers work with her honestly? Will the clients understand
her concept and give contracts to her company? There were a number of similar uncertainties.
And the biggest risk was of letting go of a secure job. She thought about it over and over,
whether she should start the housekeeping business or not. She was sure that if she was able
to succeed, then a lot would change. She could become a successful business person and
earn good money. She would be able to generate employment and would also be able to earn a
name in the housekeeping business. She assessed the risks and the consequences, and finally
decided to take the risk
Finally, she resigned from her job. Then, she started going from one office to another looking
for work. Many times, she would return empty handed and disappointed after a long day and
wonder if she would get any contract or not. After two months, she got her first contract from a
woman designer. She earned Rs. 300 from a contract of Rs. 3,000. She really valued her first
earnings and also felt proud. From small beginnings, she started moving ahead.
In 1992-93, she got an opportunity to work at the Connaught Place branch of the Punjab
National Bank. The walls were full of paan spit and the washrooms were in a deplorable
condition. The work was to be done only on Saturdays and Sundays. When the task was
finished, the manager along with the staff were very happy to see the shining walls and
washrooms. Noticing their work, other organizations also sought her services.
Gradually, she made a team of her own which was ready to work with her in a dedicated
fashion. Observing their superior work and reasonable rates, the number of their customers
increased. She faced a lot of ups and downs in 10 years but her company constantly
progressed. Today, her company, Express Housekeepers Pvt. Ltd. is one of the biggest
housekeeping companies in India. 2,000 people are employed in her company today. She is the
first person in India to bring in the concept of housekeeping.

Please write the second event that happened in the story. Mention 2 specific details of the event.

CONCLUSION: What is the moral of the story or the conclusion that you are making after reading it?

Let's Think
● What did Ms Sarita do after identifying the problem and Why?

● What qualities in Ms Sarita helped her to take ownership of the problem to

solve it?

● Have you faced a situation where you wanted to solve a problem and people
discouraged you? How did you handle it? Explain in brief.

Takeaway
Ms Sarita Sarvaria identified a problem of house-keeping in India. She analysed the
risks and realized that along with uncertainties, the venture also had huge potential.
Therefore, without paying attention to the people around her, she marched ahead
taking ownership of the problem which yielded her great results. When you see an
opportunity, it is up to you to take ownership and fully develop the opportunity. This
unit presents an opportunity for you to take ownership of defining a student club on a
topic that you are passionate about and design its website. In the next unit, you’ll
develop the website.

R1: Define club’s mission & activities

Context
Congratulations! You have chosen your student club in the
last session. In general, student clubs are initiated for
different purposes like building a skill, entertainment,
pursuing one’s dream career, social service, and others.
Have you thought about what would be the purpose of your
student club? What activities would your club conduct?
In today’s session you will do just that.

Group Activity
1. Make a copy of the student club template at
https://bit.ly/student-club-template and rename it as your club’s
template. You’ll need this spreadsheet throughout this and the
next unit. In this session, you’ll work only on the Mission and
Activities tabs in the spreadsheet.
2. In your group, think about the main purpose of your club. What
would it do and for whom? This can be entered as the mission
for your club.
3. Think about what activities should be conducted in your club
that would be enjoyable and will provide value to the club
members. Enter these in your copy of the student club template.
4. You may refer to FUNiversity club sample examples in a previous
section.

Let's Think 9-4
R1
★ Why is it necessary to define the mission and activities for the club?

★ How will the proposed activities help the students who are club
members? How will they help others, if any, in the community?

Takeaway
Mission of your club would give a clear direction as to what it is set out to do. The
list of activities planned give an idea of how you plan to achieve that mission. Being
clear about the mission and activities would make it easier for students with
matching interests to join the club.

S1: Get familiar with parts of websites, Explore club websites
Context
Designing your club's website is the next step after planning
your club in previous sessions. A website is important for your
club because new students can learn about your club and join
if they want. It also helps current club members.
If you haven't made a website before, don't worry. You can use
easy tools like HTML, WordPress, Canva, or Google Sites to
create one. These tools are not hard to use and can help you
share information about your club or connect with others in
different ways. Having a website is a great way to show what
your club does and invite new members to join. It will be
useful for your club's growth.

● What did you notice on the student club websites that made them
easy or hard to use?

● If you could change something on one of the websites, what would

it be?

Takeaway
From this activity, we learned that websites have different parts, they differ in how
they look, how we move around them, the pages with information, and the parts that
let us interact. We explored some student club websites and saw how they were
designed and organised. We also learned what makes a website easy to use and
enjoyable for people who visit it. We practiced giving ratings to the websites based
on their design elements, which help us understand what makes a good website.

It was useful for us to look at a few similar club

websites before we create our own. Why is that? Well,
we often learn better by seeing examples than just
learning from theory.

Group Activity
1. In this fun activity, based on your browsing of various club websites, you will
ideate and decide on the web elements you’d like to include in your club's
website. You can mark them on the "List of Desired Elements in Club

factors makes a web page more engaging for users.

Takeaway

Club website would give information about the club and help members to document
their activities all at one place and build interaction with people aiding in visibility for
the club. Events planned, contact details, enable new members to join the club,
gallery and other details can be part of the website.

Home Task

Find a website that deals with a similar topic as your proposed student club and
check whether your website covers all important elements present on that
website. If not, see if they need to be added.

PONDER…
Make decisions,
don't just take
them.

S3: Sketch detailed design including wire-frames & site-map
Context
Now that you have the elements you would like in your website, should you
start developing the web-site online? If no, why not?

We have all ingredients for making a

club’s website but we don’t know how it
would come together. It is similar to
having all ingredients for making a food
item but not knowing the recipe for
preparing that item.
BEFORE we implement a website, we
need to visualize it on paper in terms of
its site plan and basic wire-frames.

Group Activity
To develop the design of your club’s website, you may start with YOUR COPY of the
“List of Desired Elements in Club Website” (https://bit.ly/club-website-elements)
from the previous session.Taking inspiration from what you liked while browsing
various club websites, design:
● A site plan which indicates what pages are needed and how to navigate
among them.
● A wireframe is a sketch of important web pages on the site.
Examples for both are given on the next 2-3 pages.

By the end of this activity, you'll have a clear idea of your club's website design,
making it easier to bring your ideas to life.

Let's Think
★ What is the purpose of drawing the site-map and wireframes of the
website?

★ What new needs or issues regarding the website you noticed while
drawing the sitemap or wireframes?

Takeaway

Design of the website in the form of Site map and Layout wire-frames (sketches)
help you visualize the website more effectively and identify issues early. This club
website design will form the basis for you to actually implement the club website in
the next unit.

Home Task
Review your website design and check whether the details would be adequate for
implementing it as a website? If not, add more details.

PONDER…
Trust your instincts
but verify with facts.

T1: Performing the Assessment Task & Showcasing Your Work

Context
At the end of the unit, you will perform an assessment task and submit its output.
You or your group may be also asked to showcase your work done in the unit.

You will be given an assessment task to work on partly at home and partly in class
or computer lab. Submit the output of the task as indicated.

Consult your teacher about the best way to showcase your work done in this unit;
many methods are possible. Whichever method you choose, you should include all
the topics given below clearly.

1. Why is there a need for student clubs in schools? Describe in detail.

2. Describe top 3 to 5 things you observed while exploring the sample club
website and website of other clubs?

3. What is the mission of your proposed student club? Describe its activities and
reasons why students will want to join the club.

4. Describe your proposed club’s structure and roles.

5. Show the site plan and wireframes (sketches) you have prepared for your
website design.

6. While trying to create a basic website on your own, what did you learn about
