Linearstatic Analysis

The document outlines the steps for conducting linear static analysis for a building, including weight determination, base shear computation, and drift analysis. It provides a detailed example involving a sanitarium in Cebu, detailing calculations for seismic forces and inter-storey shear. The analysis concludes with a redesign requirement for level 2 due to excessive drift beyond allowable limits.

LINEAR STATIC ANALYSIS

STEPS
1. Determine the total weight of the building
2. Determine the parameters for base shear computation
3. Once base shear is determined, solve for the value of Fx
4. Solve for Fx of a single frame.
5. Use GRASP to determine the story drift of each level
6. Compute for the inter-story drift, maximum inelastic displacement,
drift ratio, maximum inter-storey drift ratio/drift angle
7. Compare maximum inter storey drift ratio with allowable drift ratio
8. If the computed drift angle is less than the allowable then OK,
however, if it is greater than the allowable the Not OK. Redesign if
not OK.
9. Solve also for the inter-storey shear and stiffness
Formula
maximum inelastic displacement

maximum inter-storey drift ratio

inter-storey drift e = i - j

inter-storey shear Qi= Fi + Fj

Stiffness Ki= Qi/ e

Example

A sanitarium will be constructed in Cebu on a stiff soil profile It will be

made of concrete with special moment-resisting frame. No earthquake
higher than 5.2 magnitude was recorded closer than 6km from the
building site. The first three floors weigh 5200 kN while the top floor
weighs 4200kN. Determine the seismic forces on the building frame
along the E-W direction.

Solution
Solve for the total weight of the structure

Wx hx Wx(hx)
W1 = 5200kN h1 = 3.5m W1h1 = 18200kNm
W2 = 5200kN h2 = 7m W2h2 = 36400kNm
W3 = 5200kN h3 = 10.5m W3h3 = 54600kNm
W4 = 4200kN h4 = 14m W4h4 = 58800kNm
WT = 19800kN ∑Wihi = 168000kNm

Solve for the base shear

Where:
Occupancy Category III (Special Occupancy Structure), Seismic source type C,
Soil Profile Type SD, Seismic Zone 4
Cv = 0.64Nv = 0.64, where Nv = 1.0
I = 1.0
W = 19800kN
R = 8.5
T = Ct (hn)3/4 , Ct = 0.0731 for concrete moment-resisting frames , hn = 14m
T = (0.0731) (14)3/4 = 0.529sec

Check base shear value

Solve for Vmax

Where: Ca = 0.44Na = 0.44, where Na = 1.0

Solve for Vmin

Z= 0.4 for seismic zone 4

Since, V > Vmax  Use Vmax, thus V = 2562.35kN.

Solve for Fx

Since T = 0.529sec < 0.70 sec thus Ft = 0 V = 2562.35kN

Wx hx Wx(hx)
W1 = 5200kN h1 = 3.5m W1h1 = 18200kNm
W2 = 5200kN h2 = 7m W2h2 = 36400kNm
W3 = 5200kN h3 = 10.5m W3h3 = 54600kNm
W4 = 4200kN h4 = 14m W4h4 = 58800kNm
WT = 19800kN ∑Wihi = 168000kNm

Check:
F1 + F2 + F3 + F4 + Ft = V
277.59 + 555.18 + 832.76 + 896.82 = V
V = 2562.35kN = 2562.35kN, Ok!
For every single frame Fx/n, for 5 frames

F4 + Ft =179.36kN
Using GRASP, determine the story drift
F3 = 166.55kN kN 3.5m
Assumed size of column 500mm x 500mm,
Assumed size of beam 300mm x 500mm
F2 = 111.04kN 3.5m

F1 = 55.52kN 3.5m

Level 1,3 and 4 are Ok
except for level 2. Therefore,
redesign.
