Problems and proposed solutions to the heatwave crisis in the Philippine education system.

Katriel Jadzia S. Santiago

STEM11-B; Term 1, 2024-2025

Thesis Statement: The heat affects not only the teachers and students but the Philippine
education system as a whole.

1.0 (Introduction: Hook Statement) Most students travel to school to study and learn in their
respective classrooms and facilities, but what happens if the temperature increases and the sun
blisters, creating an environment where the students feel like they're getting cooked inside an
oven?
1.1. (Summary of the situation) The climate crisis causes intense heatwaves that worsen
yearly, affecting more people than ever, including teachers and students.
1.2. (Specific message/Topic sentence) I will be presenting how the education of the
students is affected by the heat and how this causes many problems, as well as possible
solutions to prevent the adverse effects.
2.0. (Body Paragraph 1: Topic Sentence on Problems) Education is an essential human
right for everyone; hence, it is important to discuss the effects of the rising temperatures and
how letting this problem persist can significantly impact each student’s learning.
2.1. (Problem 1) Students from public and private schools struggle to focus and
become vulnerable to the heatwave, with reports of heat stress and dehydration inside and
outside the school premises. (Ramos, 2024; Hernando-Malipot, 2024).
2.2. (Problem 2) Multiple teachers must think of ways to combat the heat and watch
over the students to see if they are getting hydrated or cooled enough to protect their health,
but they are also part of those who are affected by the heat, making them struggle to
concentrate in teaching concepts and lessons properly. (Gutierrez, 2024; Dancel, 2023;
Hernando-Malipot, 2024).
2.3. (Problem 3) With DepEd trying to respond to this by shifting to suspensions or
online classes, the learning experience gets affected by the constant adjustments to the school
calendars and curriculum, making it a pain for the learners to adapt, further slowing down
their ability to learn. (Chi, 2024; Pandey, 2024; Prena & Labayo, 2024).
3.0. (Body Paragraph 2: Topic Sentence on Solutions) There are multiple solutions to
combat the heat and avoid disruption of classes, which I will discuss about.
3.1. (Solution 1) Sufficient ventilation for facilities and proper water breaks help cool
the students and teachers while promoting hydration.
3.2. (Solution 2) Heat planning and response are important for managing academic
schedules and protecting the well-being of the learners and educators.
3.3. (Solution 3) Decreasing the use of fossil fuels and finding alternative electricity
sources to help slow climate change are the main reasons why there is a heatwave in the first
place.
4.0. (Conclusion Paragraph: General Summary Statement) Society should be aware that the
heatwave crisis is not a simple issue; it is something that can cause many complications in the
education system.
4.1. (Summary of the Problems and the Solutions) The soaring heat causes the
education quality to deteriorate due to students and teachers struggling to concentrate on school
activities and due to the lack of response of the government to make effective long-term
solutions, which is why it is important to note the possible solutions such as proper ventilation
and action plans to help alleviate the effects.
4.2. (Implications) Being knowledgeable of the ongoing situation helps create
awareness of the victims experiencing the effects and leads to preparedness to face the climate
crisis in the future.
4.3 (Clincher / Closing Sentence) Learning how to respond positively and fix the
heatwave crisis for the betterment of the education system helps our country's future
development, providing quality education for all.
