Perimeter and Area - Important Notes & Formulas

1. Introduction to Perimeter and Area

Perimeter is the total length of the boundary of a closed figure.

Area is the region enclosed within a shape.

Examples of real-life applications:

- Fencing a garden (Perimeter)

- Painting a wall (Area)

2. Area of a Parallelogram
A parallelogram can be transformed into a rectangle of equal area.

Formula: **Area = Base × Height**

Example: If a parallelogram has **base = 5 cm** and **height = 3 cm**, then:

**Area = 5 × 3 = 15 cm²**

3. Area of a Triangle
A triangle can be considered as half of a parallelogram.

Formula: **Area = (1/2) × Base × Height**

Example: If a triangle has **base = 6 cm** and **height = 4 cm**, then:

**Area = (1/2) × 6 × 4 = 12 cm²**

4. Perimeter and Circumference of a Circle

The perimeter of a circle is called its **circumference**.

Formula: **Circumference = 2πr = πd**

Example: If the radius of a circle is **7 cm**, then:

**Circumference = 2 × (22/7) × 7 = 44 cm**

5. Area of a Circle
Formula: **Area = πr²**

Example: If the radius of a circle is **10 cm**, then:

**Area = (22/7) × 10 × 10 = 314 cm²**

6. Summary of Key Formulas
Concept Formula
Perimeter of a Rectangle 2 × (Length + Breadth)
Area of a Rectangle Length × Breadth
Area of a Triangle (1/2) × Base × Height
Area of a Parallelogram Base × Height
Circumference of a Circle 2πr or πd
