Common Function Mistakes

(And How to Avoid Them)

1. The Empty Cell Trap When using SUM or

AVERAGE, watch out for empty cells in your
range. They can throw off your calculations.
2. The Text vs. Numbers Mix-up Make sure

DATE & TIME FUNCTIONS

Learn how to manage and manipulate dates and
times efficiently.

TODAY()
TODAY Returns the current date.

NOW()
NOW Returns the current date and time.

DATE(year, month, day)

DATE Creates a date from the specified year, month,
and day.

TIME(hour, minute, second)

TIME Creates a time from the specified hour, minute,
and second.

DATEDIF(start_date, end_date, unit)

DATEDIF Calculates the difference between two dates
based on the specified unit (e.g., days)

WEEKDAY(date, [return_type])
WEEKDAY Returns the day of the week corresponding to a
date.

EOMONTH(start_date, months)
EOMONTH Returns the last day of the month a specified
number of months before or after a start date.

Learn how evaluate conditions and return specific
values based on logic.

IF(logical_test, [value_if_true], [value_if_false])

IF Returns a specified value if a condition is true or
another value if the condition is false.

IFERROR(value, value_if_error)
IFERROR Returns a specified value if an error is detected;
otherwise, returns the original value.

IFNA(value, value_if_na)
IFNA Returns a specified value if the value is #N/A;
otherwise, returns the original value.

AND(logical1, [logical2], ...)

AND Returns TRUE if all arguments are true; otherwise,
returns FALSE.

OR(logical1, [logical2], ...)

OR Returns TRUE if any argument is true; otherwise,
returns FALSE.

NOT(logical)
NOT Reverses the logical value of its argument.

1. The "Must Be to the Right" Rule VLOOKUP
only looks right.It's like a person who can
only turn their head to the right - limiting,

want an exact match" TRUE means "Eh, close
enough" (Spoiler: Almost always use FALSE)
3. The Hidden Column Count Trap You need to
count columns manually. It's like counting
doors to find the right room - miss one, and
you're in the wrong place.
