BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI

Hyderabad Campus
First Semester 2022-2023
Signals & Systems (EEE/ ECE/INSTR F243)
Comprehensive Exam
PART-B (Open Book)

Time : 9.30 – 12.30 PM Date: 10/05/23

Max Marks : 120 Day: Wednesday

60M
Note: (1) Answer all parts of the question together

(1) (a) Consider the continuous-time signals, x(t) = 2δ(t + 5) - 2δ(t – 6) and
𝑡
𝑦(𝑡) = ∫−∞ 𝑥(𝜏)𝑑𝜏. (i) Obtain and plot y(t) (ii) Calculate the energy of the
signal y(t) (5)

(b) Consider the following two continuous-time signals (10)

x(t) = 2t, 0<t<1
= (3 – t), 1<t<3
= 0, elsewhere
and h(t) = u(t) – u(t – 2)
(i) Plot x(t) and h(t). Show all the x-axis and y-axis values.
(ii) Convolve x(t) * h(t) using graphical method. In convolution operation flip and
shift h(t) signal. Show all the graphs, convolution integrals, their limits and final
expressions obtained after each integral.

(2) (a) Consider the continuous time signal f(t) = 4 cos3t. Determine the Fourier transform
of the following signals using suitable properties. Specify clearly the properties you
have used.
𝑑2
(i) g(t) = f (2 – t) + f (-2 – t) and (ii) 𝑓(𝑡 − 2) (10)
𝑑𝑡 2
(b) Find the total response of the LTI system described by the following differential
equation using Laplace transform.
𝑑2 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑥
2
𝑦(𝑡) + 6 + 8𝑦(𝑡) = + 𝑥(𝑡)
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
where x(t) = t2u(t). Show all the steps clearly. While doing partial fraction method, show
all the steps and also the obtained coefficient values clearly. (10)

(3) (a) Given discrete-time signals, input x(n) and impulse response h(n) as shown below:
x(n) = 2u(n + 2) – 2u(n) – 3u(n – 1) + 3u(n – 3) and (10)
h(n) = -u(n + 1) + 3 u(n) – 5u(n -1) + 3u(n – 2)
(i) Plot x(n) and h(n) signals separately and show its x-axis and y-axis values and
(ii) determine output y(n) = x(n) * h(n) using graphical method. In convolution
operation flip and shift h(n) signal. Show all the graphs in each convolution
operation, their summation limits and final values obtained after convolution
operations.
(iii) Plot the final output y(n) with x-axis and y-axis values clearly.

(b) Determine the output of an LTI system with the impulse response h(n) = {2, 1} and
x(n) = {1, 2, 1} using DFT-IDFT method. (15)
(i) Compute the 4-point DFT coefficients using DIF-FFT algorithm. Show all the
diagrams, twiddle factor values and final output values clearly
(ii) compute IDFT coefficients using DIT-FFT algorithm. Show all the diagrams, twiddle
factor values and final output values clearly.
