Bee Assignment 4

The document consists of a series of engineering problems related to electrical circuits, specifically focusing on 3-phase systems, including calculations for voltages, currents, power, and magnetic circuits. It covers various configurations such as star and delta connections, as well as the effects of load changes and circuit parameters. The problems require applying principles of electrical engineering to determine the necessary values for resistances, currents, and magnetic properties.

ASSIGNMENT 4

1. The phase voltage of a 3-phase, 12 MVA star-connected alternator is 6000 V. Calculate (i) the
line voltage (ii) full load line current of the alternator.

2. The voltage measured between the terminals of a 3-phase, 3-wire alternator is recorded as 208
V. A 3-phase load consisting of three 10-ohm resistors in star is connected to the terminals of
the alternator. If one of the resistors should become open-circuited, what would be the current,
the voltage and the power of the remaining resistors?

3. The resistance between two terminals of a balanced star-connected load is measured as 12 Ω.

What is the resistance of each phase?

4. Calculate the active and reactive components in each phase of a star-connected 5000 V, 3-phase
alternator supplying 3000 kW at power factor 0.8.

5. Calculate the power absorbed by three similar choking coils each of resistance 150 Ω and
inductance 1.275 H when star-connected to a 440 V, 3-phase, 25 Hz supply.

6. Three identical resistances, each of 18 Ω, are connected in delta across 400 V, 3-phase supply.
What value of resistance in each leg of balanced star-connected load would take the same line
current?

7. Three similar resistors are connected in star across a 415 V, 3-phase supply. The line current is
10 A. Calculate (i) the value of each resistance (ii) the line voltage required to give the same
line current if the resistors were delta-connected.

8. A balanced 3-phase load consists of three coils, each of resistance 4 Ω and inductance 0.02 H.
Determine the total power when the coils are (i) star-connected (ii) delta-connected to a 400 V,
3-phase, 50 Hz supply.

9. Three capacitors, each 50 μF, are connected in delta to a 400 V, 3-phase 50 Hz supply. What
will be the capacitance of the three capacitors such that when connected in star across the same
supply, the line current remains the same?

10. Three 6 Ω non-inductive resistances are connected in (i) star (ii) delta across 400 V, 50 Hz 3-
phase supply. Calculate the total power drawn in each case. In the event of one of the three
resistances getting open-circuited, what would be the value of the total power taken from the
mains in each of the two cases?

11. A 440 V, 3-phase delta-connected induction motor has an output of 14.92 kW at a p.f. of 0.82
and efficiency 85%. If another star-connected load of 10 kW at 0.85 p.f. is added in parallel,
find (i) current drawn from the supply (ii) total power.

12. A 3-phase delta connected motor connected to 400 V, 50 Hz supply has an output of 29.84 kW,
the efficiency and power factor being 95% and 0.9 respectively. Calculate the phase current in
each winding.

13. A 3-phase delta-connected load, each phase of which has an inductive reactance of 40 Ω and a
resistance of 25 Ω, is fed from the secondary of a 3-phase, star connected transformer which
has a phase voltage of 240 V. Calculate (i) the current in each phase of the load (ii) voltage
across each phase of the load (iii) current in transformer secondary (iv) total power taken from
the supply.

14. It is required to produce a flux density of 0·6 Wb/m2 in an air gap having a length of 8 mm.
Calculate the m.m.f. required.

15. A coil of 200 turns is wound uniformly over a wooden ring having a mean circumference of 60
cm and a uniform cross-sectional area of 5 cm2. If the current through the coil is 4A, calculate
(i) the magnetizing force (ii) the flux density and (iii) the total flux.

16. A core forms a closed magnetic loop of path length 32 cm. Half of this path has a cross-sectional
area of 2 cm2 and relative permeability 800. The other half has a cross-sectional area of 4 cm2
and relative permeability 400. Find the current needed to produce a flux of 0·4 Wb in the core
if it is wound with 1000 turns of insulated wire. Ignore leakage and fringing effects.

17. An iron ring has a cross-sectional area of 400 mm2 and a mean diameter of 250 mm. An air gap
of 1 mm has been made by a saw-cut across the section of the ring. If a magnetic flux of 0·3
mWb is required in the air gap, find the current necessary to produce this flux when a coil of
400 turns is wound on the ring. The iron has a relative permeability of 500.

18. An iron ring has a mean circumferential length of 60 cm and a uniform winding of 300 turns.
An air gap has been made by a saw-cut across the section of the ring. When a current of 1 A
flows through the coil, the flux density in the air gap is found to be 0·126 Wb/m2. How long is
the air gap? Assume iron has a relative permeability of 300.

19. An iron magnetic circuit has a uniform cross-sectional area of 5 cm2 and a length of 25 cm. A
coil of 120 turns is wound uniformly over the magnetic circuit. When the current in the coil is
1·5 A, the total flux is 0·3 Wb. Find the relative permeability of iron.

20. The uneven ring-shaped core shown in Figure below has μr = 1000 and the flux density in the
thicker section is to be 0.75 T. If the current through a coil wound on the core is to be 500 mA,
determine number of coil turns required.

21. A rectangular magnetic core shown in Figure has square cross

section of area 16 cm2. An air gap of 2 mm is cut across one of its
limbs. Find the exciting current needed in the coil having 1,000
turns wound on the core to create an air-gap flux of 4 mWb. The
relative permeability of the core is 2000.
22. The magnetic circuit of Figure below is energised by a current of 3A. If the coil has 1500 turns,
find the flux produced in the air gap. The relative permeability of the core material is 3000.
