Old Buildings, is it worth preserving them?

It is an undeniable fact that, most of today’s cities are filled with old buildings, who are not
used anymore and are not maintained properly. Despite the fact that, many a people
believe that these buildings are a waste of time and money, local authorities in many cities
of the world are keen to preserve old buildings. Therefore the question arises ‘’Is it worth
preserving old buildings, rather than just demolishing them?’’. The positive as well as the
negative outcomes of this decision are going to be described in greater detail below.

To begin with, proponents of this view argue that old buildings are a vital part of a city’s
cultural heritage. To put it in another way, many a buildings have some significant
importance for a city’s history, so destroying them would be a grave mistake. To add one
more thing, as an old traditional Greek saying goes’’ History is vital for a town, thus taking it
away is like destroying the city’s historical heritage’’. Furthermore, people often claim that,
old buildings can be turned into museums to display the city’s history. Undoubtesly, if cities
create more museums, more visitors will be attracted, resulting in some tremendous
economical advantages being created. Last but definitely not least as ……

On the other hand, nevertheless, a coin has two sides and the same holds true for this case
too. Firstly, opponents of this view argue that, the huge restoration and maintenance costs
of old buildings, exceedingly outweighs the revenue that will be made from it. Thus, if old
buildings are restored to their former glory, cities will some significant amount of money.
Additionally, since most of the old buildings do not have the proper structural and
architectural support, they can be unsafe not only for the people that either live or work in
them, but for the people that walk near them. Suffice it to say, that old buildings do not
pass the modern safety checks. Lastly, it is popularly believed that, the old architect and
decoration of buildings do not blend in with the more modern architecture of buildings. In
this regard, old buildings would stand out in cities, but with a negative meaning.

To sum up, I wholeheartedly believe that the disadvantages of preserving an old building
greatly outnumber the corresponding advantages. However, it is my firm beilief that the
best solution is for some buildings to be restored and not all of them. Needless to say that
‘’Everything needs careful planning and not spontaneous decision making’’, as an old
Hellenic proverb claims
