Lesson Plan: Nouns and Types of Nouns for Grade 7 Learners

Subject: English
Subject Matter/Area: Grammar
Time Allotment: 60 minutes

Learning Objectives:
 Students will be able to define a noun.
 Students will be able to differentiate between common and proper nouns.
 Students will be able to identify concrete and abstract nouns.
 Students will be able to use different types of nouns in sentences.

Materials:
 Whiteboard or Projector
 Markers/Pens
 Chart Paper
 Pictures/Cutouts of various objects (optional)
 Worksheet with practice exercises (including sentences with missing nouns)
 Digital Tool/Platform: Padlet

Procedure:
A. Introduction (10 minutes)
1. Brainstorming: Begin by asking students what they see around the classroom. Have
them name different objects, places, and people. Write their answers on the board.
2. Introduction of Nouns: Explain that the words they listed are all examples of nouns.
Define a noun as a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
3. Examples: Use the words on the board to demonstrate. Point to a student and say, "John
is a noun (proper noun) because it names a person." Point to a picture (if using) and say,
"Tree is a noun (common noun) because it names a thing."
B. Activity: Identifying Common and Proper Nouns (15 minutes)
1. Divide the Class: Divide students into pairs or small groups.
2. Distribute Pictures/Cutouts: Provide pictures or cutouts of various objects, places, and
people (or use words written on slips of paper).
3. Sorting Activity: Instruct students to sort the pictures/cutouts into two categories:
common nouns and proper nouns.
4. Discussion: After sorting, have each group share their categories and explain their
reasoning behind their choices. Discuss any disagreements as a class.

C. Presentation: Concrete vs. Abstract Nouns (15 minutes)

1. Introduce the Concept: Explain the difference between concrete nouns and abstract
nouns.
2. Concrete Nouns: Define concrete nouns as words that name things we can perceive with
our senses (see, touch, hear, smell, taste). Provide examples like "chair," "flower," and
"music."
3. Abstract Nouns: Define abstract nouns as words that name ideas, feelings, or concepts
that cannot be perceived with our senses. Provide examples like "love," "freedom," and
"justice."
4. Interactive Activity: Play a guessing game. Show pictures or say a word related to a
sense (e.g., picture of a cake). Students guess the concrete noun and then the related
abstract noun (e.g., taste - sweetness).

D. Practice and Application (15 minutes)

1. Distribute Worksheet: Hand out a worksheet with various exercises.
2. Exercise 1: Students identify the nouns in a set of sentences.
3. Exercise 2: Students categorize the nouns as common, proper, concrete, or abstract.
4. Exercise 3: Students write their own sentences using different types of nouns.
5. Review and Check: Review the answers together as a class, clarifying any doubts.
E. Generalization/Conclusion (5 minutes)
1. Review the main points of the lesson: the definition of a noun and the different types of nouns.
2. Encourage students to continue practicing identifying and using nouns in their writing and
reading.
3. Ask if there are any questions before giving the assessment and assignment for the lesson.

E. Assessment (5 minutes)
1. Exit Ticket: Distribute an exit ticket with a simple question like: "What are the different
types of nouns you learned today?" Students answer the question briefly before leaving
the class.

F. Assignment (Task to be done at home)

 Have students create a short story using a variety of nouns.
 Ask students to find examples of different types of nouns in a newspaper or magazine
article.

Differentiation:
 For advanced learners: Provide them with more challenging exercises, such as
identifying compound nouns or possessive nouns.
 For struggling learners: Offer them a word bank to help them identify nouns in the
practice exercises.
