Health Betterment System

The Hospital Management System (HMS) is a project aimed at facilitating at-home doctor consultations to reduce hospital congestion and improve patient access to healthcare. It allows patients to register, view doctors, set appointment times, and manage electronic health records while automating billing processes. The system seeks to enhance the quality of healthcare received by patients and is presented by Tedd Edwin and Benedict Sanya at the 60th Kenya Science and Engineering Fair.

ABSTRACT
This Hospital Management System is a platform that focuses on facilitating at-
home doctor consultations, streamlining the process for both patients and
doctors. The system begins with patient registration, capturing essential
demographics and medical information. A core feature is the doctor
appointment portal where doctors can set their own consultation fees, promoting
transparency and informed patient choice. The system allows patients to browse
available doctors, view their fees, and propose appointment dates and times.
Doctors, in turn, can review these requests and confirm appointments based on
their availability, fostering a collaborative scheduling process.

Beyond appointment management, the HMS securely stores and manages

electronic health records providing doctors with convenient access to patient
medical histories and past diagnoses. This enables doctors to form treatment
plans during home visits. The system also automates billing and financial
transactions, generating invoices based on the doctor's set fees and facilitating
online payments. This simplifies the financial aspect of at-home consultations,
ensuring prompt and accurate billing.

The system helps to reduce congestion in hospitals and to ensure patient

satisfaction.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The inspiration for this Hospital Management System stemmed from direct
observation of the challenges faced by our local referral hospital. During a visit, we
witnessed firsthand the severe congestion, with patients facing long wait times,
often for issues that could potentially be addressed more efficiently. This
overcrowding not only delays treatment for those with urgent needs but also
creates a stressful environment for both patients and healthcare providers.
Furthermore, it limits the time doctors can spend with each patient, potentially
impacting the quality of care. We recognized that a significant portion of these
visits might be avoidable if there were a more accessible and streamlined way for
patients to consult with doctors for less critical conditions, particularly those that
could be managed at home. This observation led us to explore how technology
could be leveraged to alleviate hospital congestion and improve access to
healthcare.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Despite the government efforts to reduce hospital congestion in hospitals, patients
are unable to receive quality healthcare from hospitals and some even do not get
the opportunity to receive consultation from doctors.

1.3 STATEMENT OF ORIGINALITY

This Hospital Management System is an original project developed by us, Tedd
Edwin and Benedict Sanya. We were motivated by the observed problem of
hospital congestion and the difficulties patients face in accessing timely care. Our
project offers a novel solution by providing a platform for patients to easily
connect with doctors for at-home consultations, offering transparent pricing, and
managing electronic health records. This approach aims to reduce the burden on
hospitals while ensuring patients receive quality healthcare in the comfort of their
homes. All aspects of the system's design and implementation are our own.

1
1.4 STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
1. To develop a platform in which doctors and patients can interact.

2. To develop a way to decongest hospitals while still ensuring patients get quality
healthcare.

1.5 STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

Is there a way to ensure that hospitals are decongested while still patients receive
quality healthcare?

1.6 MERITS
1. The platform helps to reduce congestion of hospitals.

2. In case of an emergency, patients have easy access to Healthcare.

3. Doctors have an alternative source of income other than their respective

hospitals.

1.7 DEMERITS
1. Serious health issues cannot be handled through the platform

1.8 ASSUMPTIONS
The patients have basic knowledge on the use of the platform

2
CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 PAST WORKS DONE
The challenge of hospital congestion has plagued healthcare systems for decades.
Overcrowded emergency rooms, long wait times, and the strain on resources have
spurred innovation in delivering care outside traditional hospital walls. One
significant approach has been the development of platforms and systems designed
to bring doctors and healthcare services directly to patients' homes.

The formalized concept of bringing comprehensive healthcare services into the

home began to take shape with the rise of “visiting nurse associations” in the late
19th and early 20th centuries. These organizations, often staffed by dedicated
nurses, provided essential care to patients in their homes, particularly those who
were unable to travel or lacked access to medical facilities. This marked an early
recognition of the value of home-based care, though it was primarily focused on
nursing services rather than comprehensive physician visits.

The internet revolution and the proliferation of mobile devices created new
possibilities for connecting patients and healthcare providers.Remote Treatment
expanded beyond simple phone calls to include video conferencing and remote
monitoring. This allowed for more comprehensive virtual care, enabling doctors to
diagnose, treat, and manage patients easily.

More recently, the rise of on-demand mobile health services has further
revolutionized the landscape of home-based healthcare. Companies like DocGo,
for example, offer platforms that connect patients with healthcare professionals
who can provide in-home care on demand. These services leverage technology to
streamline the process of requesting and receiving care, making it easier for
patients to access medical attention when and where they need it. This represents a
significant leap forward in terms of convenience and accessibility, further reducing
the reliance on traditional hospital visits.

3
2.2 RELATED RESEARCH
The concept of Remote Treatment was obtained from research done by the
company DocGo on the effectiveness of remote healthcare

2.3 IMPORTANCE OF THE RESEARCH

1. It provides a way to reduce congestion of hospitals

2. It ensures that customers are satisfied on the healthcare they receive

2.4 RELEVANCE OF THE RESEARCH TO THE

SOCIETY
The Hospital Management system bridges the gap between doctors and patients
making their communication effective. This therefore increases the quality of the
healthcare received by patients improving their quality of life.

4
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY
3.1 APPARATUS USED
1. A laptop and or a computer with access to a web browser.

2. A stable internet connection.

3.2 PROCEDURE
1. Access any web browser through the laptop and or computer.

2. Access the home page of the site. A web page will pop up giving the general
overview of the website.

3. Scroll through the webpage to find the patients sign-up and login portal and
click on the link. You will be prompted to create an account. Please fill in the
necessary information to create the account

4. After successful account creation, log in through the platform as a patient. You
will be taken to a page where you can select your preferred specialist.

5. Pick through a doctor (Their consultation fees are listed on the side) and the
platform will connect the patient and the doctor by means of messaging.

3.3 PRECAUTIONS
The platform is not to be used in case of a serious health issue where the life of the
patient is at risk.

5
3.4 VARIABLES
a) Dependent Variables

Rate of Congestion: The measure of which how many hospitals are congested per
100 hospitals. The rate of congestion of hospitals is dependent on the time taken in
the study.

Rate of use of remote healthcare: A measure on how much people have interacted
with remote healthcare services per 100 people. The rate of use of remote
Healthcare is dependent on the time taken in the study.

b) Independent Variables
Time. The time taken during the study. It is not affected by any other factors.

4.2 DATA INTERPRETATION

From the graphs, it can be seen that there is a general trend that if the average rate
of congestion to go down as the number of interactions with remote healthcare
goes up.

It can therefore be concluded that as the number of people who have interacted
with remote healthcare services increased the congestion of hospitals decreased

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1 RECOMMENDATION
We recommend our platform to all people who are able to access the
platform to make use of it since it helps in saving of lives and
administering quality healthcare

5.2 CONCLUSION
As we conclude we encourage people in the country to make use of this
method of using the Hospital Management System since it is economical
and very convenient this platform has been proven true and effective.
