Graphical analysis of motion questions

A train starts from rest and obtains a velocity of 12 m s-1 after 4 s of uniform acceleration. It travels at this velocity for 5 s
and then slows uniformly to a stop in 2 s.
Plot a Velocity-Time graph of the trains motion

1:

From the graph calculate:

(i) the distance travelled during each stage of the motion

(ii) the train’s acceleration in each stage

A car starts from rest and accelerates at 2 m s-2 for 3 s. It travels at this constant speed for a further 2 s before
accelerating at half the previous rate for a further 4 s. The car then uniformly stops in 6 s.
Plot a Velocity-Time graph

2:

From the graph determine

(i) the cars velocity when travelling at constant speed

(ii) the cars maximum velocity

(iii) the total distance travelled

(iv) the deceleration rate

Equations of motion

A body starts from rest and accelerates at 2 m s-2 for 10 s.

Determine
(i) the final velocity

(ii) the distance travelled

3:

Two cars A and B travel a distance of 160 km. Car A takes 2 hours for the trip travelling at a constant speed. Car B leaves
20 minutes later travelling at constant speed and reaches the destination at the same time as Car A.
Plot a Distance-Time graph of each cars motion on the one axes and from the graph determine the average speed of each
car.

4:

Draw a Velocity-Time graph for the following motions

(i) a constant speed of 5 m s-1.
(ii) a constant acceleration of 2 m s-2.
(iii) a constant deceleration of 3 m s-2.

6:
c. the total distance travelled.

d. the time the cyclist is travelling at 10 m s-1.

The following is the Displacement - Time graph for a train trip.

a. For how long is the train stationary?

b. What velocity does the train acquire at 10 s?

d. What is the total displacement of the train?
